Chapter 12: The Enemy Who Had Been Watching Us All Along

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Every sound disappeared except the pounding of my own heart.

Richard Cross.

A name I had only recently learned.

A man who had been a shadow behind every secret.

A man connected to Daniel’s father.

A man Daniel believed was dangerous.

And now Margaret was telling me he had been trying to kill my husband.

Not twenty years ago.

Not in some forgotten family tragedy.

Recently.

While Daniel was still alive.

While we were eating dinner.

While Noah was doing homework at the kitchen table.

While I was sleeping beside the man I loved.

I looked at Margaret.

“You knew?””

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“I suspected.””

The anger came instantly.

“Everyone suspects.””

My voice shook.

“Everyone knows pieces. Everyone has theories. Everyone has warnings.””

I pointed toward the door.

“But nobody tells me anything until after Daniel is dead.””

Margaret looked down.

“I deserve that.””

“Yes.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

She accepted it.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because I wanted her to argue.

I wanted her to defend herself.

I wanted her to be the villain who was easy to hate.

But she wasn’t.

She was just another person who had spent twenty years making terrible choices out of fear.

And those choices had destroyed everyone around her.

“What exactly did Richard do?””

Margaret looked toward the window again.

Like she expected someone to be standing there.

“He built an empire on secrets.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

She swallowed.

“Richard knew Michael had evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

“Financial crimes. Fraud. Things that could destroy him.””

“And Michael disappeared because of that?””

“Yes.””

“But he survived.””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“Because someone helped him.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I was exhausted.

“I’m starting to hate that phrase.””

Margaret looked at me.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your whole life was built around lies.””

Her expression changed.

“You’re right.””

A pause.

“Because I was the person who built them.””

That admission silenced me.

Before I could respond, Margaret’s phone rang again.

This time, she didn’t answer.

She looked terrified.

“Turn it off.””

“What?””

“Your phone.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because if Richard is calling me…”

She looked at the phone.

“He wants me to know he can reach me.””

A chill moved through me.

A message.

Not a conversation.

A threat.

I pulled out my own phone.

No missed calls.

No messages.

But then I noticed something.

The screen lit up.

A notification.

From an unknown number.

My blood went cold.

One photo.

Attached.

I opened it.

And my stomach dropped.

It was Noah.

Taken that morning.

Walking into school.

From across the street.

I stopped breathing.

Margaret saw my face.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward her.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Oh my God.””

The fear in her voice was real.

Not fake.

Not manipulation.

Real.

I stood.

“I need to get my son.””

Margaret grabbed my arm.

“Emily.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

“You can’t go alone.””

“I’m not leaving him.””

“I know.””

Her voice became urgent.

“But that’s exactly what he wants.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Richard knows you’re emotional.””

My jaw tightened.

“He knows you’ll run.””

She stepped closer.

“And that makes you predictable.””

The words hurt because they were true.

I hated that.

I hated that someone was studying me.

Studying my reactions.

Studying my family.

“How long?””

Margaret looked confused.

“What?””

“How long has he been watching us?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Months.””

The answer hit me.

Months.

Not days.

Not after Daniel died.

Before.

While Daniel was alive.

I thought about all the moments I ignored.

The strange cars.

The feeling of being watched.

The times Daniel looked outside before closing the curtains.

The way he suddenly changed passwords.

The way he started taking his phone everywhere.

I thought he was stressed.

I thought he was tired.

I thought we were going through a difficult period.

I never imagined he was afraid.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Margaret’s eyes softened.

“Because he loved you.””

I looked away.

Everyone kept saying that.

But now I understood what it meant.

Daniel didn’t hide things because he didn’t trust me.

He hid things because he trusted himself to carry the burden.

And that had almost killed him.

Maybe it did kill him.

I left Margaret’s house immediately.

This time, I didn’t drive home.

I drove to Noah’s school.

I called the office.

They answered quickly.

“I need to speak with Noah.””

“Are you his mother?””

“Yes.””

“Is everything okay?””

I looked at the road.

“No.””

There was a pause.

Then:

“Your son is not here.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

“He was picked up.””

The world stopped.

“Picked up by who?””

The woman sounded confused.

“Your husband.””

My hand tightened around the steering wheel.

“My husband is dead.””

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Then:

“I’m sorry.””

“Who picked him up?””

“I don’t know. The person said they were authorized.””

My heart was pounding.

“Who signed him out?””

“I’ll check.””

The line went quiet.

Every second felt like an hour.

Then she came back.

“Mrs. Vale…”

Her voice sounded nervous.

“The signature is unusual.””

“What does that mean?””

“It’s your husband’s name.””

I felt sick.

Daniel.

Someone had signed Daniel’s name.

Someone had taken my son using my dead husband’s identity.

I pulled the car over.

I couldn’t see.

I couldn’t think.

I called Noah.

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Again.

Nothing.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Where is my son?””

Silence.

Then a familiar voice.

“Emily.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

At the funeral.

In the background.

In the moments before everything changed.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“You know who I am.””

My grip tightened.

“Richard Cross.””

Silence.

Then a quiet laugh.

“You’re smarter than Daniel gave you credit for.””

My blood ran cold.

“You have my son.””

“I have your son because I need to talk to you.””

“Give him back.””

“Soon.””

“Now.””

His voice became colder.

“You sound exactly like Daniel.””

I ignored the fear.

“Where is he?””

“Safe.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the only one you’re getting until you listen.””

I closed my eyes.

“Listen to what?””

“The truth.””

I almost laughed.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

“You’ve spent twenty years hiding it.””

“No.””

His voice changed.

“I spent twenty years preventing people from being hurt by it.””

I felt anger rise.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re protecting anyone.””

“You think I’m the villain.””

A pause.

“Daniel thought the same thing.””

The mention of my husband made my chest tighten.

“What did you do to him?””

“I didn’t kill Daniel.””

“Then why is he dead?””

Silence.

A long one.

Then:

“Because he found something he wasn’t supposed to find.””

“What?””

“The truth about Michael.””

I looked out at the road.

“What about him?””

Richard sighed.

“Your husband’s father was not the victim everyone thinks he was.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

“Michael was involved too.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

His voice became quieter.

“Ask Margaret why she never told Daniel what his father really did.””

My heart sank.

Because that sounded exactly like the question Daniel had left me.

Why did Margaret let him believe his father was dead?

But now Richard was twisting it.

Making me doubt everything.

“What do you want?””

“Bring me Daniel’s phone.””

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

“Then you won’t see your son.””

I closed my eyes.

My hand shook.

“You don’t understand what you’re asking.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“Why the phone?””

“Because Daniel saved something on it.””

I looked at the phone in my hand.

The one thing connecting me to my husband.

The one thing everyone wanted.

“What did he save?””

A pause.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That I’m not the person you think I am.””

I hated it.

I hated that part of me wondered.

Because that was how manipulation worked.

Not by making you believe a lie.

By making you question the truth.

“Where are you?””

“You’ll get the location.””

“When?””

“When you decide whether you want answers…”

A pause.

“…or your son.””

The call ended.

I sat there.

Unable to move.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

An address.

And below it, one more sentence.

From Richard Cross.

Come alone.

I stared at the screen.

Because I knew exactly what Daniel would tell me.

Don’t go.

Don’t trust him.

Protect Noah.

But Daniel wasn’t here.

And Noah was.

I started the car.

Then stopped.

Because another message appeared.

This one from a different number.

Sarah.

I opened it.

Emily, don’t go.

My heart raced.

How did she know?

Another message came.

Richard is not asking for the phone.

He is trying to get you away from something.

I typed quickly.

Away from what?

The response came almost immediately.

Your house.

I froze.

Another message.

Emily…

The thing Daniel was protecting you from was never Richard.

My fingers went numb.

Then the final message appeared.

It was the one that made my blood run cold.

It’s someone inside your family.

Someone who has been helping him all along.

I stared at the screen.

Because suddenly I understood.

Richard wasn’t the only person who knew our secrets.

Someone had given him information.

Someone had access to our lives.

Someone close enough to know where Noah was.

Someone close enough to know Daniel’s plans.

Someone close enough to betray us.

And then my phone rang again.

This time, it wasn’t unknown.

The name appeared clearly.

Claire.

I answered.

But before I could speak, I heard her crying.

“Emily…”

Her voice was shaking.

“I need you to listen to me.””

I stood frozen.

“Where is Noah?””

A pause.

Then Claire whispered:

“That’s why I’m calling.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

Her voice broke.

“Because Victor didn’t tell you everything.””

Silence.

“Claire…”

She took a shaky breath.

“Victor knows where Noah is.””

The world went quiet.

May you like

And then she said the words that shattered the last piece of trust I had left.

“He’s the one who took him.””
