Chapter 8: The Girl Who Remembered
Emma could not answer.
The girl stood beneath the final corridor light, barefoot on the concrete floor, her white dress hanging almost to her ankles. She looked older than the child in the photographs and younger than the woman in Emma's broken memories.
But the eyes were the same.
Pale blue.
Unmistakable.
"Sophie," Emma whispered.
The girl smiled.
"Say it again.""
Emma took one step forward.
Daniel caught her wrist.
"Don't.""
She turned on him.
"Let go.""
"Emma, something is wrong.""
"Everything is wrong.""
Sophie watched them from the end of the corridor.
Her expression remained strangely calm.
"He's afraid you'll remember.""
Emma looked at Daniel.
"Is that true?""
Daniel's silence answered for him.
She pulled free.
"You don't get to stop me anymore.""
Daniel's voice broke.
"I'm trying to keep you alive.""
Sophie laughed softly.
"You've been saying that for nine years.""
Daniel looked at her.
"You shouldn't be here.""
Sophie tilted her head.
"Neither should you.""
Ethan stepped beside Emma.
"Who kept you?""
Sophie looked at him.
"They did.""
"Who are they?""
She pointed toward the ceiling.
"Everyone.""
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"That's not an answer.""
"It is here.""
Emma walked closer.
"Sophie, where have you been?""
Sophie looked at her for a long moment.
"Waiting.""
"For me?""
"For you to remember what happened.""
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't leave you.""
Sophie lowered her gaze.
"You did.""
"No.""
"You picked up Lily.""
"I don't remember.""
"You were crying.""
Emma stopped.
A fragment surfaced.
Fluorescent lights.
A baby crying.
A little girl's hand wrapped around her finger.
Someone pulling at her shoulder.
A man's voice shouting:
"Take the infant and go.""
Emma gasped.
Daniel stepped toward her.
"Emma?""
She backed away from him.
"I remember.""
Sophie nodded.
"Good.""
Emma closed her eyes.
Another fragment.
Her own voice.
"I can't take both.""
Daniel's face went white.
"No.""
Emma looked at him.
"I said that.""
"You didn't know what you were saying.""
"I said I couldn't take both babies.""
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"You were delirious.""
Sophie shook her head.
"No, Mom.""
Emma looked at her.
"You knew exactly what you were doing.""
Daniel whispered, "Sophie.""
The girl ignored him.
"They told you Lily was safe.""
Emma swallowed.
"What did they tell me about you?""
Sophie walked closer.
"They told you I was dangerous.""
Emma shook her head.
"Why?""
"Because I remembered.""
Ethan's face hardened.
"Remembered what?""
Sophie looked at him.
"What you did.""
He froze.
Emma stared at Ethan.
"What did he do?""
Sophie continued before he could answer.
"He tried to get us out.""
Emma frowned.
"Then why was he dangerous?""
"He wasn't.""
Sophie looked directly at Daniel.
"He was the only one who tried to help me.""
Emma felt a sickening shift in her understanding.
She turned to Daniel.
"You said Ethan was responsible.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"You let me believe he was the monster.""
"I had no choice.""
"You always have a choice!""
Her voice echoed through the corridor.
Sophie flinched.
Emma immediately lowered her voice.
"I'm sorry.""
Sophie smiled sadly.
"You still do that.""
"What?""
"Apologize when you're scared.""
Emma's chest tightened.
"How do you know that?""
"Because I remember you.""
She stepped closer.
"You used to sing to us.""
Emma looked down.
The old song.
The one Lily had heard upstairs.
"You remember?""
"I remember everything.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's not possible.""
Sophie turned to him.
"They told you that because they needed you to believe I was gone.""
"Who told you that?""
"Elena.""
Emma felt the name strike her like ice water.
"Elena is alive.""
Sophie nodded.
"Yes.""
Ethan looked toward the walls.
"Where?""
Sophie didn't answer.
Instead, she turned toward the viewing room.
"Come.""
Emma followed.
Daniel blocked the doorway.
"No.""
Emma glared at him.
"Move.""
"You don't know what she'll show you.""
"Neither do you.""
"I've seen it.""
Emma stopped.
"You've seen my memory?""
Daniel nodded.
"Once.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because after they erased it, you finally had a life.""
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"A life built on a lie.""
"It was the only life I could give you.""
"No.""
She stepped closer.
"It was the life you chose for me.""
Daniel said nothing.
Emma walked past him.
Ethan followed.
Lily remained beside Daniel.
He knelt.
"Lily.""
She looked at him.
"Are you scared?""
"Yes.""
"Stay with me.""
Lily shook her head.
"I need to go with Mom.""
Daniel stared.
"Why?""
"Because Sophie asked her to come.""
"And?""
Lily looked at him.
"She never asks for anything.""
Daniel released a shaky breath.
Then stood.
"All right.""
The viewing room was circular.
A single chair sat beneath a ceiling-mounted projector.
No windows.
No doors except the one they had entered through.
On the far wall was a screen.
A red button marked PLAY.
Sophie walked to the chair.
"Sit.""
Emma stared.
"Me?""
"You.""
"Why?""
"Because you have to see it from your own eyes.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"I'll do it.""
Sophie shook her head.
"She has to remember.""
Emma sat.
Metal cuffs rested beside the chair.
She recoiled.
"I'm not doing that.""
"You don't have to.""
Sophie touched the projector.
A soft mechanical hum filled the room.
The screen came alive.
Emma saw herself.
Nine years younger.
Pregnant.
Exhausted.
Sitting in the underground laboratory.
Her younger face was swollen from crying.
A woman stood over her.
Dr. Elena Vale.
Beautiful.
Calm.
Cold.
"You have two choices," Elena said on the recording.
"Forget them both, or lose them both.""
Emma's breathing stopped.
The recording continued.
A younger Daniel stood behind the glass.
His face was bruised.
His hands were bleeding.
He was yelling.
"Don't touch her!""
Elena ignored him.
Emma watched herself shake her head.
"Where is my daughter?""
Elena placed a newborn baby into her arms.
"Lily.""
Emma stared at the screen.
Her younger self looked down at the baby.
Then asked,
"Where is Sophie?""
Elena's expression changed.
"Dead.""
Emma watching from the chair covered her mouth.
"No.""
Daniel whispered behind her.
"I'm sorry.""
On the screen, Emma began sobbing.
"I want to see her.""
"You can't.""
"I want my baby.""
"You have your baby.""
Then Elena leaned closer.
"If you want to keep her, you will forget.""
Emma on the screen stared at Lily.
Something changed in her eyes.
She nodded.
"Okay.""
The recording shifted.
A different room.
Emma was strapped into a chair.
Lily was being carried away.
Daniel was pounding on the glass.
"You promised me!""
Elena turned toward him.
"She will never remember.""
Daniel screamed.
"You can't do this!""
Then Ethan appeared.
He slammed through the door.
He grabbed Elena and pulled her away from Emma.
Alarms erupted.
Daniel rushed toward Emma.
The recording became chaotic.
Ethan shouted:
"Get her out!""
Daniel released the restraints.
Emma collapsed into his arms.
She was crying.
"I can't remember her name.""
Daniel held her face.
"You don't have to.""
"I can't remember.""
"I know.""
Then Sophie appeared on the other side of the glass.
A little girl.
Seven years old.
Her face pressed against the window.
She watched Emma disappear.
And for the first time, Emma heard what Sophie had said.
Not angry.
Not accusing.
Just terrified.
"Mom, don't leave me.""
Emma in the viewing room screamed.
"No!""
She stood so quickly the chair fell behind her.
The screen went black.
Emma turned toward Daniel.
"You heard her.""
He was crying.
"Yes.""
"You left her there.""
"I came back.""
"Too late.""
"I tried.""
"You chose me.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
"You did.""
"I chose both of you.""
"Then why did Sophie stay?""
"Because Elena trapped her.""
Emma stared.
"Why didn't you go back?""
"I did.""
"When?""
"The next night.""
"What happened?""
Daniel looked at Sophie.
"She was gone.""
Sophie nodded.
"They moved me.""
"Where?""
"Everywhere.""
She paused.
"Until I learned how to disappear.""
Ethan stepped closer.
"Who taught you?""
Sophie smiled.
"You did.""
Ethan stared.
"What?""
"You taught me that people look at what they expect to see.""
He said nothing.
Sophie turned to Emma.
"That's why they could never find me.""
A sound interrupted them.
A distant metallic clang.
Then another.
Someone was approaching.
Daniel looked toward the door.
"That's not part of the recording.""
Ethan drew his weapon.
"Someone's coming.""
Sophie didn't seem surprised.
"They found us.""
Emma looked at her.
"Who?""
Sophie pointed toward the ceiling.
"The people who want Lily.""
Lily moved closer to Emma.
A man's voice came through the speakers.
"Dr. Mercer.""
Daniel froze.
Emma looked at him.
"Dr. Mercer?""
The voice continued.
"Bring the child upstairs.""
Daniel slowly turned toward Ethan.
"That's my old title.""
Ethan's expression darkened.
"They've activated the system.""
The room's locks slammed shut.
Emma rushed to the door.
"Open it!""
No response.
Sophie stood in the center of the room.
Completely calm.
Emma looked at her.
"How do we get out?""
Sophie pointed beneath the viewing chair.
"There.""
Daniel dropped to his knees and searched beneath it.
His fingers found a hidden latch.
He pulled.
A narrow hatch opened in the floor.
Cold air rushed upward.
A tunnel.
Ethan looked at Sophie.
"You knew about this.""
She nodded.
"I built it.""
Emma stared.
"You?""
"I've been hiding here since I was thirteen.""
The voice on the speakers returned.
"Thirty seconds.""
Ethan looked at the tunnel.
"Move.""
They climbed inside.
Daniel carried Lily.
Emma followed Sophie.
Just as Ethan entered, the viewing-room door exploded inward.
Men in dark clothing rushed inside.
One shouted,
"Find the girl!""
Sophie disappeared into the tunnel.
Emma followed.
The hatch slammed above them.
They crawled through darkness.
Behind them came pounding footsteps.
Emma could hear Lily breathing.
Daniel whispered,
"How much farther?""
Sophie answered from ahead.
"Not far.""
Then the tunnel opened into a small room.
A single lamp illuminated a desk.
On it were dozens of photographs.
Sophie walked to the desk.
She picked up the newest one.
Then handed it to Emma.
It showed the Mercer family in their backyard.
Emma.
Daniel.
Lily.
And standing behind Lily was Sophie.
The photograph had been taken that afternoon.
Emma stared.
"How?""
Sophie looked at her.
"Because I wasn't hiding from you.""
Emma looked back at the picture.
She finally noticed the timestamp.
5:47 p.m.
The exact moment Lily had fallen from her bicycle.
Emma's blood ran cold.
"You're the one who took this.""
Sophie nodded.
"I needed to know whether you would remember me.""
"And when you saw me?""
"I knew.""
"Knew what?""
Sophie looked toward Lily.
"That you still loved me.""
A heavy silence fell.
Then Daniel whispered,
"Emma.""
She turned.
He was staring at another photograph on the desk.
His hands were shaking.
Emma followed his gaze.
It was a picture of Elena.
Alive.
Standing outside the Mercer house.
Taken three months earlier.
Daniel whispered,
"She found us.""
Sophie corrected him.
"No.""
Everyone looked at her.
"She never lost us.""
A phone began ringing somewhere in the hidden room.
Emma's heart pounded.
Sophie picked it up.
She listened.
Her face changed.
"Who is it?"" Emma asked.
Sophie slowly handed the phone to her.
"It's for you.""
Emma held it to her ear.
At first, there was only breathing.
Then a woman's voice.
Her own voice.
Older.
Exhausted.
Almost broken.
"Emma...""
She froze.
The voice whispered:
"I'm sorry I left you.""
Emma's eyes widened.
"What?""
The woman on the phone began crying.
Then she said:
"Don't trust Sophie.""
The line went dead.
Emma stared at Sophie.
Sophie was already crying.
Because she had heard every word.
May you like
And beneath the desk, hidden in the shadows, a small green light blinked.
Someone else was listening.
