Chapter 10: The Truth Waiting Behind Her Own Face

The woman on the porch lifted one hand.

"Bring me the girl.""

Emma stood in the rain, unable to move.

Lily pressed herself against her mother.

Daniel raised the gun.

"Get inside.""

The woman laughed softly.

"You've said that before.""

Emma's eyes narrowed.

She knew that voice.

Not from the phone.

Not from the recordings.

From somewhere deeper.

A place she had spent years trying not to remember.

"You were there," Emma whispered.

The woman tilted her head.

"Where?""

"The hospital.""

A faint smile.

"And the lab.""

Another smile.

"You remember more than they expected.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"Who are you?""

The woman looked at him.

"You still don't know?""

"No.""

"I thought you would.""

Lightning flashed.

For one instant, her face was completely illuminated.

Emma saw the scar beneath her chin.

The same crescent mark.

The same pale eyes.

The same mouth.

But there was something different in the way she looked at Emma.

Not hatred.

Recognition.

"You're Subject Zero," Ethan said.

The woman laughed.

"That's what Elena called me.""

Emma stared.

"Subject Zero?""

The woman nodded.

"The first attempt.""

Emma's heart pounded.

"The first attempt at what?""

"At making me.""

Daniel lowered his weapon slightly.

"What happened to the original?""

The woman looked at Emma.

"You're looking at her.""

Silence.

Emma's breathing stopped.

"No.""

The woman walked slowly down the porch steps.

Rain streamed down her hair.

"You keep asking which one is real.""

She pointed at Emma.

"The answer isn't simple.""

Then she pointed toward herself.

"Neither of us is.""

Lily began crying.

Daniel immediately moved in front of her.

"Don't come any closer.""

The woman stopped.

"You think the gun will change what happens?""

"It might.""

"No.""

She smiled.

"You already chose.""

Emma looked at Daniel.

"What does she mean?""

He didn't answer.

Emma stepped around him.

"Tell me.""

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"I made a deal.""

Emma felt the world drop beneath her.

"What deal?""

"Years ago.""

"With whom?""

"Elena.""

The woman on the porch nodded.

"Finally.""

Emma stared at Daniel.

"What did you promise?""

"Your memories.""

"What?""

Daniel swallowed.

"I promised that if they let you live, I would never search for Sophie again.""

Sophie's face changed.

"That was the deal?""

Daniel looked at her.

"I thought you were dead.""

"You knew where she was.""

"I knew they had her.""

"You chose Emma.""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"She was dying.""

Emma froze.

"Dying?""

Daniel looked at her.

"The procedure damaged your brain.""

She stared.

"What procedure?""

"The last one.""

Ethan shook his head.

"He's leaving something out.""

Daniel turned.

"Don't.""

Ethan's expression hardened.

"You didn't just save her.""

Emma looked at Ethan.

"What did he do?""

Ethan answered.

"He transferred part of your memory into the replica.""

Emma looked at the woman on the porch.

Her stomach twisted.

"That's why she exists.""

"Yes.""

The woman nodded.

"Every memory they removed from you was copied into me.""

Emma stared at her.

"Then what am I?""

The woman answered softly.

"The part they couldn't control.""

A long silence followed.

Rain hit the grass.

Thunder rolled in the distance.

Sophie suddenly stepped forward.

"If she has Mom's memories, then why does she want Lily?""

The woman looked at her.

"Because Lily has the original sequence.""

Ethan frowned.

"What sequence?""

"The memory that started everything.""

Emma felt dizzy.

"What memory?""

The woman looked directly at her.

"The night Sophie died.""

Sophie shook her head.

"I didn't die.""

The woman's expression softened.

"You did.""

"No.""

"You died in that room.""

Sophie backed away.

"I remember leaving.""

"You remember leaving because those memories were copied from someone else.""

Emma looked at Sophie.

"What does that mean?""

The woman answered.

"Sophie died.""

Sophie stared at her.

"Then who am I?""

The woman walked another step closer.

"The child they rebuilt.""

Sophie shook her head.

"No.""

"Yes.""

Daniel looked devastated.

"Sophie...""

She turned on him.

"Don't call me that.""

Emma reached for her.

She flinched.

"I don't know who I am.""

"You are my daughter.""

Sophie looked at her.

"How do you know?""

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I remember loving you.""

Sophie stared.

Emma continued.

"And I remember leaving you.""

She closed her eyes.

The memory finally came whole.

No fragments.

No flashes.

A complete moment.

She was standing in the laboratory.

Two babies.

Two cribs.

Sophie, seven years old, being held by Elena.

Daniel was shouting.

Ethan was trying to break through the glass.

Emma had Lily in her arms.

Elena had told her Sophie was unstable.

Dangerous.

Contaminated by the experiment.

Emma had believed her.

Then Sophie looked at Emma.

Not with anger.

With terror.

"Mom, please.""

Emma remembered what she had done.

She had reached through the glass.

Touched Sophie's hand.

And said:

"I'll come back.""

But she never did.

Because Elena had taken her memory away.

Emma opened her eyes.

"I remember.""

Everyone stared.

"I remember everything.""

The woman on the porch smiled.

"Good.""

Emma looked at her.

"You were there.""

"Yes.""

"You watched me leave.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

The woman's expression changed.

"Because I was the one who begged you to.""

Emma frowned.

"What?""

"I told you to take Lily.""

"Why would you do that?""

"Because Sophie was already dying.""

Sophie stared at her.

"No.""

The woman looked at Sophie.

"They had damaged her brain beyond repair.""

Daniel looked away.

Ethan whispered,

"They needed a replacement body.""

Emma understood.

"That's what you became.""

The woman nodded.

"I carried Sophie's memories.""

She pointed at Emma.

"And she carried mine.""

Emma froze.

"What?""

The woman's voice became almost tender.

"When they copied your memories into me, something went wrong.""

Emma stared.

"What went wrong?""

"Your memories mixed with hers.""

Sophie's eyes widened.

"Whose?""

The woman pointed at herself.

"Mine.""

Emma whispered,

"Who are you?""

The woman smiled.

"Elena's daughter.""

Daniel's face went white.

Ethan stepped back.

"No.""

The woman looked at him.

"Yes.""

"You never had a daughter.""

"That's what the records said.""

Emma felt the final piece fall into place.

The family photograph.

The hospital.

The files.

The identical faces.

"You used my DNA.""

The woman nodded.

"Elena used your DNA to create me.""

"Why make me?""

"Because she wanted someone who could carry the memories without breaking.""

"And Sophie?""

"Was the original subject.""

Emma looked at Lily.

"Then where does Lily fit?""

The woman looked toward the house.

"She was never part of the experiment.""

Emma's heart stopped.

"She's my daughter.""

"Yes.""

"Then what is inside her?""

The woman smiled.

"Your natural memory.""

Emma didn't understand.

"The memory they couldn't copy.""

"What memory?""

"The location.""

Emma's eyes widened.

"The original facility.""

The woman nodded.

"You remembered it when you were pregnant.""

Daniel suddenly understood.

"That's why they wanted Lily.""

"Yes.""

"And Sophie knew.""

"Yes.""

"She protected Lily.""

"Yes.""

Emma looked at Sophie.

Sophie was crying.

"I knew Mom had to remember.""

Emma crossed the distance between them.

She took Sophie's face in her hands.

"You don't have to know what they called you.""

Sophie looked at her.

"What?""

"You are my daughter.""

"But what if I'm not the real Sophie?""

Emma pulled her into her arms.

"Then I will love the person standing here.""

Sophie sobbed against her shoulder.

Behind them, Daniel lowered his gun.

Ethan looked toward the house.

"We still have a problem.""

The woman on the porch smiled.

"They're here.""

Headlights appeared at the end of the street.

Three black SUVs turned onto the Mercer driveway.

Men in dark clothing stepped out.

Daniel raised his weapon.

"They found us.""

Ethan looked at Emma.

"There is one way to stop this.""

"How?""

"Destroy the facility.""

Emma glanced toward the woman.

"Can we?""

The woman nodded.

"There's an emergency system downstairs.""

"What happens?""

"It burns every record.""

"And the people?""

"They'll evacuate.""

"Then let's do it.""

Daniel stared at her.

"You'll lose all proof.""

Emma looked at the house.

"I've spent nine years losing pieces of myself.""

She took Lily's hand.

"I'm not losing any more.""

They ran.

The hidden entrance beneath the house opened with the keycard.

Ethan and Daniel went first.

Emma followed with Lily and Sophie.

The woman came behind them.

At the bottom of the stairs, she stopped.

"Go.""

Emma turned.

"What about you?""

She smiled.

"This place was built around me.""

"What does that mean?""

"I have to end it.""

Emma shook her head.

"No.""

The woman looked at her.

"For the first time, I want to make my own choice.""

Emma understood.

She walked back.

For one moment, the two identical women stood face-to-face.

Emma reached for her hand.

"What should I call you?""

The woman smiled sadly.

"Anna.""

Emma nodded.

"Goodbye, Anna.""

"Goodbye, Emma.""

The steel door closed.

Emma, Lily, Sophie, Daniel, and Ethan rushed through the tunnel.

Behind them, alarms began screaming.

Then came a deep explosion.

The tunnel shook.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Ethan shouted,

"Run!""

They burst into the abandoned maintenance building.

Seconds later, the ground beneath the Mercer house erupted.

Windows shattered.

Flames rose into the night.

The secret basement collapsed.

So did the study.

The place where Emma had spent years being watched disappeared beneath smoke and fire.

Sirens approached in the distance.

Emma stood in the rain with her daughters.

Daughters.

The word felt strange.

Impossible.

Beautiful.

Sophie reached for her hand.

Lily held the other.

Daniel stood several feet away.

Emma looked at him.

There was no forgiveness yet.

Maybe there wouldn't be for a long time.

But there was something else.

Truth.

He nodded once.

"I'll tell the police everything.""

Emma nodded.

"Good.""

Ethan looked toward the burning house.

"There's still one thing.""

Emma turned.

"What?""

He reached into his jacket and handed her a small envelope.

On the front were six handwritten words.

*For Emma. Open after the house burns.*

Emma opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Daniel.

Not of Sophie.

Not of Lily.

It showed Anna as a little girl.

Standing beside Elena.

And beside them was another child.

A little boy.

He had Daniel's face.

But beneath the photograph was a name Emma had never heard before.

*Jonathan Vale.*

Emma looked up sharply.

"Wait.""

Ethan stared.

"What?""

She turned the photograph over.

There was one final message.

*You thought Jonathan was the director. He was the subject.*

Emma's blood ran cold.

Behind them, one of the burning windows collapsed.

And from somewhere inside the destroyed house, a phone began ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Emma stared at the flames.

Then the ringing stopped.

A message appeared on the phone in her hand.

Unknown sender.

May you like

Seven words.

*You found Sophie. Now find the first.*
