Chapter 9: The Child Who Was Stolen

The words hung in the darkness.

I stole you.

Mara stared at Lillian as though the woman in front of her had suddenly become a stranger.

Daniel moved forward.

“Lillian, stop.””

“No.””

Her mother's voice trembled.

“She deserves to know.””

Eleanor smiled.

“I agree.””

Mara looked from one woman to the other.

“What does that mean?””

Lillian wiped her tears.

“It means you were never supposed to grow up knowing who you really were.””

Mara felt something cold settle inside her chest.

“My name is Mara Bennett.””

Lillian shook her head.

“That was the name Daniel gave you.””

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Because it was safer.””

Mara looked at Daniel.

“Tell me she's lying.””

He didn't answer.

“Dad.””

Daniel's silence was enough.

Mara took a step backward.

“Tell me.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Your mother is telling the truth.””

Mara's knees weakened.

“What am I?””

Lillian looked at her.

“You are my daughter.””

“That doesn't answer me.””

“You are also Eleanor's granddaughter.””

Mara frowned.

“I already knew that.””

“No,” Lillian whispered.

“You didn't.””

Eleanor stepped into the light.

“You are not Daniel's biological daughter.””

The room went completely still.

Mara stared at Daniel.

He looked devastated.

“I'm sorry.””

She laughed once.

A broken, disbelieving sound.

“You're not my father?””

“I am your father.””

“But not by blood.””

“No.””

Mara turned away.

For thirty-two years, every memory had carried the certainty of blood.

Her father's hands helping her with homework.

His voice at her school plays.

His arms around her when she was sick.

His habit of leaving coffee outside her bedroom door.

All of it suddenly felt fragile.

“Who is my biological father?””

Lillian closed her eyes.

“Jonathan Pierce.””

Mara's breath caught.

Claire whispered, “Oh my God.””

Eleanor smiled.

“That is the truth Daniel spent twenty years burying.””

Mara's mind raced.

Jonathan Pierce.

The man whose death had started everything.

The man whose company had once owned properties that later became Bennett holdings.

The man her family said had been killed in an accident.

The man whose child she apparently was.

“No.””

Lillian nodded.

“I found out when you were born.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Eleanor wanted you.””

Mara looked at her grandmother.

“Why?””

Eleanor's smile disappeared.

“Because Jonathan left something behind.””

“The ledger.””

“No.””

Eleanor looked at Mara.

“You.””

Mara felt sick.

“What?””

“Jonathan knew he was in danger. Before his death, he moved ownership of several assets into a protected trust.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“The trust named his child as the primary beneficiary.””

Mara stared at him.

“Me.””

“Yes.””

Eleanor continued.

“But your birth wasn't recorded correctly.””

Mara's face hardened.

“You changed my records.””

“I protected what belonged to the family.””

“By stealing my identity?””

“By saving your life.””

Mara looked toward Lillian.

“So when you said you stole me…”

Lillian nodded.

“I took you from the hospital before Eleanor's people could find you.””

“And Daniel?””

“He helped me.””

Mara swallowed.

“Then why did everyone think I was his daughter?””

“Because Richard arranged it.””

Richard finally spoke from the shadows.

“Because there was no other way.””

Mara turned toward him.

“You knew?””

Richard's face was bruised, but his voice remained controlled.

“I knew from the beginning.””

“You let me call Daniel Dad.””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“You were better at it than Jonathan ever got the chance to be.””

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

“And you still tried to kill me.””

Richard shook his head.

“I tried to scare you away from the archive.””

“You fired a gun at me.””

“I missed.””

“That was intentional?””

“I won't lie to you anymore.””

Mara stared at him.

“You're asking me to believe anything you say?””

“No.””

Richard looked exhausted.

“I'm asking you to understand that there are people more dangerous than me.””

Eleanor glanced at him.

“How touching.””

Richard turned toward her.

“You told me the ledger was gone.””

Eleanor smiled.

“You believed me.””

Richard's expression changed.

“You used me.””

“Yes.””

His laugh was bitter.

“So that's what this was.””

Mara looked at Eleanor.

“You manipulated Richard.””

“I manipulated everyone.””

Daniel stepped toward his mother.

“That's what you always did.””

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

“You've spent twenty years pretending to be noble.””

“You killed Jonathan.””

“I prevented a larger disaster.””

“He was going to expose you.””

“He was going to expose everyone.””

Mara stepped forward.

“Stop talking about me like I'm property.””

Eleanor looked directly at her.

“You are the beneficiary of everything Jonathan built.””

“I don't want it.””

“You don't understand what you're saying.””

“I don't care.””

Eleanor's expression hardened.

“You will.””

She snapped her fingers.

One of the men beside her raised a handgun.

Daniel immediately moved in front of Mara.

Thomas stepped beside him.

“Don't.””

Eleanor sighed.

“Nobody needs to die tonight.””

“Then why bring guns?””

“Because fear makes people honest.””

Mara looked at her.

“Then let's be honest.””

She reached into her pocket.

The USB drive.

Eleanor's eyes immediately locked onto it.

“I copied everything.””

Thomas looked at Mara, startled.

“You did?””

“While Claire was working on the laptop.””

Claire's face changed.

She understood.

Mara had created a second copy earlier.

She had hidden it inside her jacket.

Eleanor's expression hardened.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

“You have no idea what that information is worth.””

“I know exactly what it's worth.””

Mara lifted the drive.

“The names. The accounts. The properties. The payments.””

Eleanor's jaw tightened.

“And the Meridian Trust.””

Eleanor went completely still.

Daniel looked at Mara.

“You found it.””

“The archive told me enough.””

Mara faced Eleanor.

“You built the network.””

“No.””

“You expanded it.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I inherited it.””

“From whom?””

Eleanor said nothing.

Mara stepped closer.

“You said there was someone above Richard.””

“Yes.””

“Above you?””

Eleanor's expression changed.

“I was never at the top.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Don't.””

Eleanor looked at him.

“You wanted her to know the truth.””

“I wanted her to survive it.””

“She cannot survive what she doesn't understand.””

Mara's voice sharpened.

“Then tell me who is above you.””

Eleanor finally answered.

“Jonathan Pierce.””

Mara froze.

“What?””

“Jonathan didn't create the Meridian Trust.””

Eleanor's voice was quiet.

“He inherited it too.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You never told me that.””

“Because you wouldn't have believed me.””

Mara's thoughts tangled.

“Then Jonathan wasn't the victim.””

“He was the prisoner,” Eleanor said.

“What does that mean?””

“He tried to leave.””

“And they killed him?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Eleanor looked directly at Mara.

“The board.””

“What board?””

“The people who controlled the trust.””

Daniel suddenly looked toward the warehouse doors.

“Lillian.””

“What?””

“Get Mara out.””

Mara turned.

“Why?””

“Because they're here.””

A low rumble sounded outside.

Vehicles.

Several of them.

Thomas moved toward the window.

His face tightened.

“There are at least six.””

Eleanor smiled.

“They came sooner than I expected.””

Richard looked at her.

“You knew.””

“Of course.””

Mara understood.

“This whole thing was a setup.””

Eleanor didn't deny it.

“They wanted you here.””

“Why?””

“Because you're the last piece.””

“The beneficiary.””

“No.””

Eleanor's gaze sharpened.

“The key.””

Mara frowned.

“To what?””

Eleanor reached into her coat and pulled out a small antique locket.

Mara recognized it instantly.

She had seen it hanging around her mother's neck in old photographs.

Eleanor held it out.

“Your father left you something.””

“Jonathan?””

“Yes.””

Mara looked at Daniel.

“Why would he?””

“Because he knew you might one day need it.””

Eleanor opened the locket.

Inside was a tiny photograph of a newborn baby.

Mara.

On the other side were four engraved numbers.

*12-06-94.*

Mara stared.

“My birthday.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“Your adoption date.””

Mara looked at him.

“You adopted me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Officially.””

“Then why were those numbers hidden inside the locket?””

Lillian answered.

“Because Jonathan left instructions.””

“For what?””

Lillian's voice broke.

“For the day the Meridian Trust came looking for you.””

The warehouse door exploded inward.

Everyone ducked.

Glass and metal flew across the floor.

Gunfire erupted.

Thomas returned fire.

Daniel pulled Mara behind a concrete pillar.

Lillian dropped beside them.

Claire screamed from behind a workbench.

Richard tackled one of the attackers as he entered.

Eleanor stood completely still.

Mara stared at her.

“Why aren't you afraid?””

Eleanor smiled.

“Because they aren't here for me.””

She pointed at Mara.

“They're here for you.””

A man in a black suit entered.

He lifted his weapon.

“Take the girl.””

Mara looked at him.

Something about his face seemed familiar.

Then she recognized him.

The man from the restaurant photograph.

The one who had watched her at sixteen.

He looked directly at her.

“Hello, Miss Pierce.””

Mara went cold.

He knew her real name.

Not Bennett.

Pierce.

She backed away.

“Who are you?””

The man lowered his weapon.

“I'm the executor of your father's trust.””

“Jonathan?””

“Yes.””

Mara looked at Daniel.

“My father is dead.””

The man smiled.

“I wasn't talking about Daniel.””

He stepped forward.

“I was talking about Jonathan Pierce.””

Then he said something that made the entire room fall silent.

“Your biological father left instructions before his death.””

Mara couldn't speak.

The man continued.

“He instructed us to protect his daughter.””

“From whom?””

The man looked directly at Eleanor.

“From your grandmother.””

Eleanor's face went hard.

The man raised his gun.

“And from anyone who tries to take control of the Pierce inheritance.””

Mara's heart pounded.

Daniel pulled her closer.

The man looked at him.

“You knew this day would come.””

Daniel nodded.

“I hoped it wouldn't.””

The man smiled.

“Hope was never part of the plan.””

Then he pointed toward Mara.

“Come with us.””

Lillian grabbed her daughter's hand.

“No.””

Mara looked between them.

“For once, nobody is deciding for me.””

She stepped away from both sides.

Every gun in the warehouse seemed to shift toward her.

Mara lifted the hidden USB drive.

“You all want this?””

Silence.

“Then here's the deal.””

She looked at Eleanor.

Then Richard.

Then the stranger.

Then her mother.

“You tell me the entire truth.””

Her eyes settled on Daniel.

“No more lies.””

Daniel slowly nodded.

Mara continued.

“And when we're done, I decide what happens to the money, the company, the trust, and every person who betrayed me.””

The stranger smiled.

“You think you have that power?””

Mara's expression hardened.

“I know I do.””

She held up the locket.

“Because apparently I've been the owner of your secret world since the day I was born.””

A slow smile appeared on Eleanor's face.

For the first time, it wasn't confident.

It was afraid.

Mara noticed.

And that frightened her more than the guns.

Then her phone vibrated.

One new message.

Unknown number.

She looked down.

The message contained a photograph.

Daniel, much younger, standing beside Jonathan Pierce.

Between them was a third man.

Mara recognized him immediately.

The stranger in the warehouse.

But the photograph had been taken twenty-three years earlier.

Before Mara was born.

Beneath the photo were six words:

*ASK HIM WHO YOUR REAL FATHER WAS.*

Mara slowly raised her eyes.

The man in front of her smiled.

May you like

And Daniel whispered:

“Run.””
