Chapter 6: The Call From the Dead
The name on the screen seemed to drain the warmth from the car.
*Daniel Bennett.*
Mara stared at it.
The phone rang again.
Nobody moved.
Lillian's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
Claire leaned forward from the back seat.
“That's impossible.””
Mara could barely breathe.
“My father is dead.””
Thomas looked at the screen.
“Don't answer it.””
Mara's eyes remained fixed on the name.
It rang a third time.
“I need to know.””
“No,” Thomas said sharply.
“You need to understand that someone wants you to believe your father is calling.””
Mara looked at him.
“You're afraid.””
“I've been afraid for twenty years.””
The phone stopped ringing.
Silence.
Then it rang again.
Mara picked it up.
Lillian reached for her wrist.
“Mara.””
“Let me.””
She pressed *Answer*.
“Dad?””
Only static.
Then a faint voice.
“Mara.””
She nearly dropped the phone.
It was his voice.
Older recordings had never captured the strange softness he used when speaking to her.
“Mara, listen carefully.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Dad?””
“Don't trust—”
The line crackled.
“Dad!””
“—the third—”
Static.
Then a different voice interrupted.
“Hello, Mara.””
Male.
Calm.
Cold.
Mara's face changed.
“Who is this?””
The man chuckled softly.
“You've been asking the wrong questions.””
“Where is my father?””
A pause.
“Closer than you think.””
Then the call ended.
Mara stared at the screen.
Thomas immediately reached for the phone.
She pulled it away.
“That was him.””
“No.””
“I heard his voice.””
“You heard somebody using his voice.””
“You don't know that.””
Thomas looked at her.
“Yes, I do.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel died with his phone.””
Mara froze.
“You saw it?””
“I was there.””
Lillian turned sharply.
“You were at the scene?””
Thomas nodded.
“And Daniel's phone was destroyed.””
Mara stared at both of them.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because we were trying to keep you alive,” Lillian said.
Mara laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that.””
She looked at the road ahead.
“Tell me something useful.””
Lillian drove in silence.
Thomas finally spoke.
“The caller wants you to go back to the house.””
“How do you know?””
“Because they used your father's identity to reach you.””
“Why?””
“To make you emotional enough to make a mistake.””
Mara looked at the USB drive in her hand.
“The final file.””
Thomas nodded.
“Exactly.””
Claire interrupted.
“Then we shouldn't open it.””
Mara looked at her.
“We already did.””
Claire shook her head.
“No. We opened the folder.””
She pointed at the laptop.
“The file itself is encrypted.””
Mara glanced down.
“Can you break it?””
“Maybe.””
“How long?””
“Depends on how good your father's encryption is.””
Thomas looked out the rear window.
“Make sure you're not connected to the internet.””
“Why?””
“They could be tracking the device.””
Claire immediately shut off the connection.
Mara looked at her mother.
“Where are we going?””
“To a place Daniel prepared.””
“Another secret location?””
“Yes.””
“How many secrets did my father have?””
Lillian didn't answer.
Mara stared at her.
“Enough to destroy all of us?””
Lillian's silence was answer enough.
They drove for almost forty minutes.
The city disappeared behind them.
Houses became sparse.
The roads narrowed.
Finally, Lillian turned onto an unmarked dirt lane and stopped beside an abandoned-looking warehouse.
Mara looked through the windshield.
“This is the place?””
Lillian nodded.
Daniel's old workshop badge hung from her mirror.
Mara recognized it.
She had seen it in family photographs.
Lillian parked inside.
Thomas jumped out and opened the side door.
They entered the warehouse.
The interior was almost completely empty.
Old tables.
Broken shelves.
Dust.
Then Lillian crossed to the far wall and pressed a brick.
Something clicked.
A section of concrete moved inward.
Behind it was a room.
Mara stepped inside.
There were beds.
Food.
Medical supplies.
Multiple phones.
And boxes of documents.
“This was prepared for you,” Lillian said.
Mara turned.
“When?””
“Three years ago.””
“Three years?””
“Daniel knew something was coming.””
Mara looked around.
“He never told me.””
“He thought ignorance would protect you.””
“It didn't.””
Lillian lowered her eyes.
“No.””
Mara walked to the nearest box.
Her name was written on it.
She opened it.
Inside were school photographs.
Birth certificates.
Letters.
Old birthday cards.
A hospital bracelet.
A baby blanket.
Her childhood.
Her father had been collecting everything.
Mara touched the blanket.
“Why?””
“Because he was afraid you'd disappear too.””
Mara looked up.
“Disappear like Mom?””
Lillian nodded.
“Yes.””
Claire called from across the room.
“Mara.””
She was standing beside a table.
“There are computers here.””
One screen was already on.
A document filled the display.
Mara approached.
It was a list of names.
Some she recognized.
Some she didn't.
Near the bottom was:
*RICHARD BENNETT — ACTIVE*
Then:
*EDWARD HALE — ACTIVE*
Mara's stomach tightened.
“Mr. Hale.””
Thomas nodded.
Another name appeared.
*LUCAS BENNETT — COMPROMISED*
Mara stopped.
“What does that mean?””
“It could mean he's being coerced,” Thomas said.
“Or?””
“Or he's working with them.””
Mara shook her head.
“My brother wouldn't.””
“You didn't think Richard would shoot at you either,” Thomas said.
She glared at him.
Then she noticed another line.
*LILLIAN BENNETT — DECEASED*
Mara looked at her mother.
“You've been listed as dead all these years.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
Thomas answered.
“Listed as dead.””
“But he was actually dead.””
Thomas hesitated.
“Officially.””
Mara turned.
“What does that mean?””
“Your father died.””
“That isn't what you said.””
“I said officially.””
Mara stared at him.
Thomas looked down.
“There are questions about the body.””
Lillian suddenly stepped toward him.
“Thomas.””
He ignored her.
“Daniel had extensive burns from the crash.””
Mara's expression changed.
“You're saying…”
“Identification was based primarily on dental records.””
Mara's heart began racing.
“Was there DNA?””
Thomas shook his head.
“Not that I saw.””
The room went silent.
Mara stepped backward.
Her entire understanding of the past seemed to fracture.
“No.””
Lillian whispered her name.
“No.””
Mara turned on her.
“You knew.””
“I suspected.””
“You knew!””
“I didn't know.””
“You let me bury a man who might not have been my father!””
Lillian's eyes filled with tears.
“I lost him too.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“No.””
Lillian wiped her cheek.
“It isn't.””
Mara looked at Thomas.
“Where is he?””
“We don't know.””
“You said you were there.””
“I was.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
Thomas took a long breath.
“Daniel called me three days before the crash.””
Mara listened.
“He said he'd found the final account.””
“What account?””
“An account connecting every payment, every property acquisition, every person involved.””
“Why didn't he give it to you?””
“He tried.””
“What happened?””
Thomas looked at Lillian.
“She arrived first.””
Mara's eyes widened.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“She knew where he was.””
“She was trying to warn him.””
“About what?””
“Your father's attorney.””
Mara immediately remembered the stranger.
Mr. Hale.
“He was there?””
“Yes.””
Thomas's voice became quieter.
“He wasn't alone.””
Mara waited.
“Who was with him?””
Thomas didn't answer.
Lillian did.
“Lucas.””
The word landed like a blow.
Mara stumbled back.
“No.””
“Your brother was there that night.””
“Why?””
“We never found out.””
“Did he hurt Dad?””
“I don't know.””
Mara shook her head.
“Everyone keeps saying they don't know.””
Then the room's main monitor flickered.
All three screens turned on at once.
A video appeared.
Mara's blood ran cold.
It showed the Bennett family kitchen.
Her father was standing by the counter.
Lucas was across from him.
The footage was grainy.
Date stamped:
*11 MONTHS AGO — 10:17 PM*
The night before Daniel's death.
Mara stepped closer.
She had never seen this recording.
Daniel slammed a folder onto the counter.
“You sold me out.””
Lucas shook his head.
“I had no choice.””
“You always have a choice.””
“I was desperate.””
“You were my son.””
“I needed the money!””
Daniel's face hardened.
“How much did Richard pay you?””
Lucas looked away.
Mara's hand covered her mouth.
The argument continued.
Then something changed.
A shadow moved behind Daniel.
Someone entered the kitchen.
The camera angle didn't show the person's face.
Only the hand.
A silver ring.
Daniel turned.
His expression changed instantly.
“No.””
The screen went black.
Mara whispered, “Who was wearing that ring?””
Lillian stared at the monitor.
Thomas didn't move.
“Tell me.””
Lillian looked at her daughter.
“I don't know.””
Mara stepped closer.
“Yes, you do.””
Lillian's eyes filled with fear.
“It belonged to someone I never thought I'd see again.””
“Who?””
Before Lillian could answer, the monitor displayed a new message.
*YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.*
Below it appeared another line.
*BRING THE USB TO PIER 17. COME ALONE.*
Mara stared.
Thomas reached for the keyboard.
A countdown appeared.
*00:29:57*
Claire whispered, “Thirty minutes.””
Mara looked at the screen.
“Pier 17.””
Lillian grabbed her arm.
“You are not going.””
Mara pulled away.
“Someone kidnapped Lucas.””
“They may be using him to lure you.””
“My father may still be alive.””
“They may be using that too.””
Mara looked between them.
Then the final line appeared.
*AND BRING THE WOMAN WHO PRETENDED TO BE DEAD.*
Lillian went rigid.
Thomas whispered, “They know she's here.””
The warehouse lights suddenly went out.
A vehicle engine roared outside.
Then another.
Mara heard doors opening.
Several men.
Claire reached for her hand.
“What do we do?””
Mara looked at the countdown.
Twenty-eight minutes.
Then she looked at her mother.
For twenty-two years, she had wanted the impossible.
One conversation.
One explanation.
One chance to ask why.
Now she finally had it.
And someone was willing to kill them all to make sure she didn't get the answers.
Mara picked up the USB drive.
“We go to Pier 17.””
Lillian shook her head.
“That's exactly what they want.””
Mara met her eyes.
“Then let's give them what they want.””
Thomas stared at her.
“That's a trap.””
Mara's expression hardened.
“I know.””
Outside, the first gunshot shattered the warehouse windows.
Mara handed the USB to Claire.
“Keep this safe.””
Then she turned toward the darkness.
“Tonight, we're not running.””
A second shot rang out.
And somewhere beyond the warehouse walls, a man's voice called her name.
“Mara.””
She recognized it instantly.
Lucas.
But his voice sounded terrified.
“Please.””
A pause.
“Mom is lying to you.””
May you like
Mara looked at Lillian.
Her mother's face had gone completely white.
