Chapter 8: The Alliance Built On Decades Of Lies

Daniel stared at the photograph until his eyes hurt.

He wanted to believe it was fake.

A misunderstanding.

A trick.

Anything except what it appeared to be.

But the image was clear.

There was no denying it.

Thomas Reed stood beside Diane Carter outside a small café.

Not years ago.

Not decades ago.

Recently.

Very recently.

The same man who had looked Daniel in the eyes and claimed he was finally revealing the truth had been meeting privately with the woman who had spent years hiding it.

Daniel felt a deep disappointment he couldn’t explain.

It wasn’t only anger.

It was something worse.

Betrayal.

Again.

Everyone around him seemed to know the story except him.

His mother.

His father.

Thomas.

Even Emily had carried pieces of the truth.

And Daniel was always the last person to find out.

“Daniel?””

Emily’s voice brought him back.

She watched his face carefully.

“What happened?””

He handed her the phone.

Emily looked at the photograph.

Her expression changed.

“You know him?””

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

“Thomas Reed.””

Her eyes widened.

“The man your father wrote about?””

Daniel nodded.

“The man who said he was my biological father.””

Emily looked confused.

“But why would he be with Diane?””

“That’s what I’m going to find out.””

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

Emily immediately reached for his arm.

“Daniel.””

He stopped.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“But don’t let anger make the decision for you.””

He looked at her.

She was right.

The old Daniel would have rushed into confrontation.

He would have demanded answers immediately.

But the old Daniel had also spent his entire life believing people simply because they were family.

He couldn’t make that mistake again.

“I’m going to talk to them.””

“Together?””

Daniel looked at her.

For a moment, he hesitated.

Emily was still recovering.

She was still carrying their child.

But then he realized something.

This was not his secret alone.

Emily had been dragged into this before she even understood why.

“Yes,” he said.

“Together.””

They found Diane at the Carter house.

She wasn’t surprised to see them.

That alone told Daniel everything.

She had been expecting him.

Diane stood in the living room.

Her face was tired.

Older.

Like the weight of the truth had finally caught up with her.

“You know.””

It wasn’t a question.

Daniel held up his phone.

“The picture.””

Diane looked at it.

Then closed her eyes.

“Thomas told you.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“No.””

A pause.

“He told me many things.””

Diane looked at him.

“But not everything.””

Exactly.

The same pattern.

The same endless cycle.

Daniel walked closer.

“How long have you been talking to him?””

Diane didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

“Years.””

Emily looked shocked.

“Years?””

Diane nodded.

“I contacted him after your father died.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

“Because I needed to know the truth.””

He almost laughed.

“You needed to know?””

“Yes.””

“You knew more than anyone.””

Diane looked at him sadly.

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I knew what your father wanted me to believe.””

That answer confused him.

“What does that mean?””

Diane sat down.

“Michael and Thomas were not enemies.””

Daniel frowned.

“But Thomas said—”

“Thomas said what benefited him.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked between them.

“You’re saying Thomas lied?””

Diane nodded.

“Yes.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Why would he lie?””

Diane looked at her.

“Because Thomas has spent his entire life believing Michael stole everything from him.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Explain.””

Diane took a breath.

“Thomas was your biological father.””

Daniel remained silent.

“But Michael was the man who raised you.””

She continued.

“When you were born, Thomas wanted to be part of your life.””

“Then why wasn’t he?””

“Because he made a choice.””

“What choice?””

Diane looked down.

“A choice that almost destroyed everything.””

Twenty-eight years earlier.

That was the year Diane never talked about.

The year before Daniel’s first memories.

The year where every important decision about his life was made.

Diane explained that after Daniel’s birth, Thomas wanted custody.

Not because he hated Michael.

Because he believed Daniel belonged with his biological family.

But Michael disagreed.

“He believed a child needed stability.””

Daniel listened silently.

“And you agreed with Michael?””

Diane nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I loved you.””

Daniel looked away.

“Or because you wanted a son.””

The words hurt.

But Diane didn’t deny them.

“Both.””

That honesty surprised him.

Diane continued.

“I wanted a child. I wanted a family. But I also wanted you to be safe.””

Emily looked at her.

“What happened with Thomas?””

Diane sighed.

“He left.””

“Just like that?””

“No.””

Her expression changed.

“He threatened to expose everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he believed we were stealing his son.””

“And were you?””

Diane looked at him.

“That depends on who you ask.””

The answer bothered Daniel because it was honest.

Not defensive.

Not carefully prepared.

Just honest.

Later that evening, Daniel found Thomas waiting outside the house.

He wasn’t surprised.

Somehow, he knew Thomas would come.

The two men stood facing each other.

For the first time, Daniel saw the resemblance.

Not obvious.

Not something he would have noticed before.

But something in their eyes.

Their expressions.

The way they held themselves.

It unsettled him.

“You showed me half the truth.””

Thomas looked down.

“I showed you what I knew.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You showed me what made you look innocent.””

Thomas didn’t respond.

“That picture.””

Silence.

“How long have you been working with Diane?””

Thomas sighed.

“I wasn’t working with her.””

“Then what?””

“Trying to fix what happened.””

Daniel shook his head.

“After hiding from me my entire life?””

Thomas looked hurt.

“I never wanted to hide.””

“But you did.””

“Yes.””

The admission surprised Daniel.

Thomas looked toward the house.

“Because your mother was right about one thing.””

“What?””

“You were safer not knowing.””

Daniel felt anger rise.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice became louder.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””

Thomas looked at him.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Daniel pointed toward himself.

“You don’t know what it feels like to discover your entire identity was built by other people.””

Thomas became quiet.

Then he said:

“I do.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because I spent my entire life knowing I had a son who didn’t know me.””

That sentence changed the anger in Daniel for a moment.

Because there was pain there.

Real pain.

But pain did not erase betrayal.

“Why now?””

Thomas looked away.

“Because Michael asked me to.””

Daniel frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night before he died.””

Thomas’s voice became softer.

“He knew the truth would eventually come out.””

Daniel stared.

“What truth?””

Thomas looked at him.

“The truth about your mother.””

The air changed.

Daniel already knew he wouldn’t like the answer.

“What about her?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then:

“Diane didn’t just hide your birth.””

A pause.

“She changed the records.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your original birth documents disappeared.””

Daniel couldn’t move.

“Why?””

Thomas looked toward the house.

“Because there was another child involved.””

Emily’s words returned.

The missing sibling.

The baby who disappeared.

The baby who was raised by someone else.

Daniel whispered:

“Who?””

Thomas looked at him.

“We don’t know.””

“Then what do you know?””

Thomas took a breath.

“That child was supposed to inherit something.””

“What?””

“Your grandfather’s estate.””

Daniel frowned.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

Thomas continued.

“Before Michael died, he discovered financial records showing someone had changed the inheritance documents.””

Daniel felt a cold wave.

“Diane?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Daniel looked back at the house.

The place where his childhood memories lived.

The place where his mother still waited.

Then he understood.

This was bigger than a hidden affair.

Bigger than a secret birth.

Someone had manipulated an entire family history.

And the person who knew the most was the person Daniel had trusted the longest.

His mother.

That night, Daniel returned inside.

Diane was sitting alone.

He placed the photograph on the table.

She looked at it.

“You talked to him.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Daniel stared at her.

“I need you to answer one question.””

Diane waited.

“What happened to the other baby?””

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Daniel saw it immediately.

She knew.

“You know.””

Diane looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“Not anymore.””

He stepped closer.

“Who was that baby?””

Diane’s eyes filled with tears.

And then she said the words that made Daniel’s entire world collapse.

“The baby wasn’t missing.””

A pause.

“The baby was raised in this family.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What?””

Diane looked at him.

“The child you’ve been searching for…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“…has been beside you your entire life.””
