Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew The Truth Before Everyone Else
The name stayed in Daniel’s mind long after his mother stopped speaking.
Thomas Reed.
A man he had never heard of.
A man his father trusted.
A man who had apparently been present on the night Daniel was born.
A man who knew something about Daniel’s identity.
And according to Michael Carter’s final letter, he was the only person who knew the complete truth.
Daniel stared at Diane.
For the first time in his life, he saw his mother differently.
Not as the woman who raised him.
Not as the woman who packed his lunches, attended his school events, and stayed awake when he was sick.
He saw her as someone standing in front of a locked door.
A door she had spent decades guarding.
“Where is he?””
Diane didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Her expression hardened.
“No.””
Daniel almost couldn’t believe it.
After everything.
After the lies.
After the secrets.
She still wanted control.
“You don’t get to say no anymore.””
Diane looked hurt.
“I am still your mother.””
“And I’m still the person whose life you kept hidden.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked away.
“I can’t.””
Daniel felt his anger rise.
“Why?””
“Because Thomas knows things your father wanted buried.””
“Things about me?””
“Yes.””
“Then I deserve to know.””
Diane remained silent.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is he?””
Finally, she whispered:
“Colorado.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Thomas moved there years ago.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know exactly.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You’re lying.””
Diane looked at him.
“I’m not.””
“You expect me to believe you don’t know where the man who knows my entire life disappeared to?””
Her silence returned.
And Daniel understood.
She knew more.
She always knew more.
“You’ve spoken to him.””
Diane didn’t respond.
That was enough.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“Daniel.””
He stopped.
“Don’t go looking for him.””
He slowly turned around.
“Why?””
Diane’s voice shook.
“Because once you know everything, there is no going back.””
Daniel looked at her.
“There hasn’t been a going back since you let Emily fall into that pool.””
The words broke something in Diane’s expression.
Because she knew he was right.
The next morning, Daniel sat beside Emily’s hospital bed.
Neither of them slept much.
Too many questions.
Too many impossible answers.
Emily watched him carefully.
“You’re leaving.””
Daniel looked up.
“I need to find Thomas.””
She nodded slowly.
“I knew you would.””
“You’re not surprised?””
“No.””
A faint, sad smile appeared on her face.
“You’re like your father.””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know who my father was anymore.””
Emily reached for his hand.
“You know who you are.””
He looked at her.
“Do I?””
“Yes.””
Her answer was immediate.
“You’re the man who jumped into a pool without thinking because his wife needed him.””
Daniel looked down.
“You’re the man who protected me before you even knew the truth.””
He squeezed her hand.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For not seeing what was happening.””
Emily shook her head.
“You trusted your family.””
“I ignored you.””
She became quiet.
Daniel looked at her.
“I should have listened.””
Emily’s eyes softened.
“Daniel, you’re here now.””
Those words mattered.
Because for the first time since discovering the secret, Daniel felt like he still had something worth fighting for.
His family.
Not the family built on lies.
The one he was creating.
Three days later, Daniel arrived in Colorado.
He had found Thomas Reed through an old business record connected to his father.
A retired cardiologist.
A quiet man.
A person who disappeared from public life after Michael Carter’s death.
The address was a small house outside Boulder.
Nothing like the Carter mansion.
No luxury.
No appearance.
Just a simple home surrounded by trees.
Daniel stood at the front door for several seconds.
He wondered what he would find.
A liar?
A stranger?
Someone who would destroy everything he had left?
He knocked.
No answer.
He knocked again.
Finally, the door opened.
An older man appeared.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
But the moment he saw Daniel, his face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You’re Michael’s son.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“You know who I am?””
Thomas stared at him.
“I’ve been waiting for you.””
Those words were worse than any answer.
Daniel stepped inside.
The house smelled like old books and coffee.
There were photographs everywhere.
But one photograph caught Daniel’s attention.
A picture of his father.
Michael.
Standing beside Thomas.
And between them…
A younger woman.
Daniel picked up the frame.
“Who is she?””
Thomas looked at the picture.
“Her name was Laura Bennett.””
Daniel froze.
Bennett.
Emily’s family name.
“What was her relationship with my father?””
Thomas sat down slowly.
“You already know some of it.””
“I know almost nothing.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Good.””
Daniel frowned.
“Good?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because the truth becomes dangerous when people think they already understand it.””
Daniel sat across from him.
“Start talking.””
Thomas sighed.
“Michael Carter was not the man everyone believed.””
Daniel looked down.
“I’m starting to understand that.””
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You don’t.””
The seriousness in his voice made Daniel pay attention.
“Your father made one mistake.””
“The affair.””
Thomas nodded.
“But that wasn’t the biggest secret.””
Daniel waited.
“Your father discovered something about your birth.””
The room became silent.
“My birth?””
Thomas nodded.
“Michael was not your biological father.””
Daniel felt the words hit him.
Even though he had prepared himself.
Even though he had suspected it.
Hearing it directly still hurt.
“Then who was?””
Thomas looked away.
“That is complicated.””
Daniel’s voice became sharp.
“I’m tired of complicated.””
Thomas sighed.
“Your mother gave birth to you.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“She is your biological mother.””
Relief and confusion mixed together.
“Then who is my father?””
Thomas looked at him.
And Daniel knew.
Before he spoke.
“Your biological father was someone Michael knew.””
“Who?””
Thomas hesitated.
“Me.””
The room went completely still.
Daniel stared.
“No.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I wish that was not true.””
Daniel stood immediately.
“You’re saying you’re my father?””
Thomas nodded.
“But Michael raised you.””
Daniel backed away.
“No.””
“I know this is impossible to accept.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“You don’t get to walk into my life and tell me my father wasn’t my father.””
Thomas looked devastated.
“I never wanted this.””
“Then why did you disappear?””
Thomas looked down.
“Because Michael asked me to.””
Daniel froze.
“Why?””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“Because your mother knew.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“My mother knew?””
“Yes.””
“And she still raised me with Michael?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked at the photograph.
“Because Michael loved you.””
Daniel felt tears forming but refused to let them fall.
“He knew?””
Thomas nodded.
“He knew from the beginning.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he believed you deserved a childhood without being trapped by adult mistakes.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“A childhood built on a lie.””
Thomas looked at him sadly.
“Maybe.””
The honesty hurt.
“But your father loved you more than anything.””
Daniel looked away.
“Then why did he leave me another letter saying I needed to find the truth?””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“Because something happened after he wrote that letter.””
“What?””
Thomas stood and walked toward a cabinet.
He opened it.
Inside was a folder.
Old.
Worn.
He handed it to Daniel.
“Your father discovered someone was trying to erase the past.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
And one final piece of information.
A name.
Diane Carter.
Daniel looked up.
His heart sank.
“My mother?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your mother knew everything.””
Daniel stared at the evidence.
“No.””
Thomas looked at him.
“She didn’t just hide your birth story.””
A pause.
“She changed it.””
Daniel’s hands trembled.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas’s voice became quiet.
“It means the woman who raised you may have saved you.””
He paused.
“And she may have destroyed everyone else to do it.””
Daniel looked at the documents again.
For the first time, he understood something terrifying.
Diane wasn’t just hiding the truth.
She had been controlling it.
May you like
And somewhere between love, fear, and desperation…
She had crossed a line she could never come back from.
