Chapter 9: The Secret About My Son That Nobody Wanted Me To Find

The question followed me everywhere.

Why did Ethan know Laura?

Why had he appeared in my life years before Vanessa?

And why was my son somehow connected to all of this?

I hated that question.

Because Noah deserved better than becoming another mystery adults whispered about.

He was just a child.

He loved cartoons.

He hated vegetables.

He still believed every problem could be solved with a hug.

He didn’t deserve to be dragged into the secrets of broken adults.

But the documents didn’t lie.

Ethan’s name was there.

My first wife’s name was there.

The dates were there.

And the timeline made no sense.

I spent the entire night researching.

Old emails.

Old records.

Anything I could find.

Most of it led nowhere.

Until I found one thing.

An old email account.

Laura’s.

I had not opened it in years.

After she passed away, I kept everything.

Not because I couldn’t move on.

Because those memories belonged to Noah.

Someday, when he was older, I wanted him to know his mother.

I never expected to find something hidden inside.

There were hundreds of emails.

Most were ordinary.

Bills.

Family messages.

Photos.

Then I saw one name.

Ethan Brooks.

My heart started racing.

The email was from seven years ago.

Before Vanessa.

Before my second marriage.

Before everything changed.

I opened it.

The message was short.

“Laura, you need to stop asking questions. Some things are better left alone.””

I stared at the screen.

My hands went cold.

Questions?

What questions?

I searched more.

Another email.

From Laura to Ethan.

“You promised me you would tell Daniel the truth.””

I stopped.

The truth.

What truth?

I kept scrolling.

Another message.

Ethan:

“You don’t understand what you’re risking.””

Laura:

“I understand exactly what I’m risking. I’m protecting my son.””

My son.

Noah.

I stood up so quickly the chair moved backward.

No.

No.

That couldn’t be what this meant.

I needed answers.

Immediately.

I called Rachel.

She answered quickly.

“Daniel?””

“Did you know about Laura?””

A pause.

“What do you mean?””

“Ethan knew my first wife.””

Rachel became quiet.

“Daniel, I didn’t know.””

“I found emails.””

“What kind of emails?””

“About Noah.””

Silence.

Then:

“Send them to me.””

I did.

Minutes passed.

Then my phone rang.

“Daniel.””

Her voice sounded different.

“What?””

“I think you need to talk to someone.””

“Who?””

“Ethan’s former business partner.””

“Why?””

“Because he knows what Ethan was doing before.””

I wrote down the name.

Michael Reynolds.

Rachel gave me an address.

“I don’t know if he’ll talk.””

“I’ll make him talk.””

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“Be careful.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying that.

Be careful.

But my family had already been torn apart.

What was I supposed to protect now?

The next afternoon, I found Michael.

He lived in a small house outside the city.

When he opened the door, his expression changed the second he saw me.

“You’re Daniel Carter.””

Not a question.

“Yes.””

He sighed.

“I wondered when this would happen.””

My stomach tightened.

“You know who I am?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Michael sat across from me.

“I knew this day would come.””

“What day?””

“The day someone finally connected the pieces.””

I leaned forward.

“Start talking.””

He looked tired.

“Ethan has always been good at making people feel special.””

I said nothing.

“He studies people.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means he finds weaknesses.””

My jaw tightened.

“And my wife?””

Michael looked away.

“Vanessa wasn’t random.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“She was chosen.””

The room became silent.

“Chosen for what?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling you what I know.””

I stood.

“Then tell me everything.””

Michael sighed.

“Years ago, Ethan worked with me in real estate investments. He was smart. Charming. People trusted him.””

“And Laura?””

“That came later.””

“How did he know her?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“Your first wife found out something about him.””

“What?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

“That’s not good enough.””

He looked at me.

“She believed Ethan was hiding money.””

My mind returned to the payment records.

Money.

Always money.

“What kind of money?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why was she talking about protecting Noah?””

Michael went quiet.

That silence terrified me.

“Michael.””

He finally said:

“Because Ethan believed Noah had something that belonged to him.””

I felt sick.

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“You’re telling me some stranger thinks my son has something?””

“I’m telling you what Ethan believed.””

I walked toward the window.

“Noah was a baby.””

“I know.””

“Laura was protecting him.””

“Yes.””

“From Ethan?””

Michael didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

That was enough.

I left his house with more questions than answers.

But one thing was clear.

Ethan’s connection to my family was not an accident.

He had been interested in us for years.

And now I needed to know why.

When I returned to Emily’s house, Vanessa was waiting.

She looked worried.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“You knew Ethan was connected to Laura.””

Her face went pale.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“No.””

“Then why did he know her?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

She stepped closer.

“Daniel, I swear.””

For once, I saw genuine fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“I didn’t know.””

I studied her.

“You really didn’t?””

“No.””

She sat down.

“I thought he was just someone who made me feel wanted.””

Her voice broke.

“I was stupid.””

I didn’t respond.

Because I was still angry.

But I also knew something.

Vanessa had betrayed me.

But Ethan had been hiding something much bigger.

“Where is Ethan now?””

She looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

“Think.””

“I haven’t talked to him since you found out.””

“Really?””

“Yes.””

I believed her.

Maybe because I wanted to.

Maybe because I had finally learned the difference between betrayal and manipulation.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Hello?””

No response.

Then a voice.

Ethan.

“Daniel.””

My entire body tightened.

“Where are you?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters to me.””

A quiet laugh.

“You’re asking the wrong questions.””

I gripped the phone.

“What do you want?””

“I want you to stop digging.””

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“You really want to know what Laura discovered?””

I froze.

“Yes.””

“Then meet me.””

“Where?””

“Where it started.””

“What does that mean?””

But the call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Vanessa looked at me.

“What did he say?””

I looked toward the window.

The answer was coming.

After years of secrets.

After years of lies.

I was finally going to learn what Ethan had been hiding.

But one thing terrified me.

People don’t fight this hard to hide ordinary secrets.

May you like

And whatever Laura discovered…

Was something Ethan was willing to destroy lives to protect.
