Chapter 6: The Stranger Who Knew The Truth Before I Did
I stared at the unknown message until the screen went dark.
Then I turned it back on.
I read it again.
“Daniel, if you think Vanessa is the only person hiding something from you, you’re wrong.””
My first reaction was anger.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Anger.
Because it felt like someone was playing with me.
Like my life had become a story everyone else knew except me.
I immediately typed back.
“Who is this?””
The message showed as delivered.
But no reply came.
I waited.
One minute.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
Nothing.
I threw the phone onto the couch and stood up.
My mind was racing.
Who knew about Vanessa and Ethan?
Who else had secrets?
And why contact me now?
I walked into the kitchen where Noah was sitting at the table coloring.
He looked up.
“Dad?””
I forced a smile.
“Yeah, buddy?””
“Are we staying here tonight?””
I looked at my son.
A simple question.
But behind it was fear.
Fear that his entire world was changing.
I sat beside him.
“For a little while.””
“Because of Mom?””
I paused.
Children notice everything.
Even when adults try to hide the truth.
“Your mom and I are having some problems.””
“Are you getting divorced?””
The word felt like a punch.
I looked at him.
Seven years old.
Too young to understand marriage.
Too young to carry the weight of adult decisions.
“I don’t know yet.””
He looked down at his drawing.
“Is it because of me?””
“No.””
I answered immediately.
“Never.””
He nodded slowly.
Then he continued coloring.
But I noticed something.
He stopped drawing the whole family.
The picture on the table had only two people now.
Me and him.
I didn’t say anything.
But I noticed.
And that hurt more than I expected.
That night, after Noah fell asleep, I called the number that had texted me.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then went to voicemail.
I called again.
Same thing.
Blocked.
Whoever this person was, they wanted my attention.
But they didn’t want to be found.
The next morning, I received another message.
This time, there was a photo attached.
My heart stopped.
It was Vanessa.
And Ethan.
Together.
Not at the restaurant.
Not at the hotel.
Somewhere else.
A parking garage.
The quality wasn’t perfect, but there was no doubt.
They were standing close.
Too close.
The timestamp was from two months earlier.
I stared at the picture.
Then another message appeared.
“Ask your wife why she lied about where she was that night.””
That night.
I knew exactly what they meant.
The night Noah was left in the car.
I felt sick.
Because until then, I had assumed Vanessa was distracted.
Careless.
Selfish.
But what if there was more?
What if she wasn’t just eating dinner?
I grabbed my keys.
I needed answers.
When I arrived at the house, Vanessa was there.
She looked surprised.
“Daniel?””
I held up my phone.
“Explain this.””
She looked at the picture.
Immediately, her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know him.””
It wasn’t a question.
It was a statement.
She swallowed.
“Who sent you that?””
“That’s what you’re worried about?””
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“Where were you that night?””
“I already told you.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You told me you were taking Noah and Chloe to dinner.””
“I was.””
“Were you?””
Her silence returned.
I hated that silence.
It had become her answer.
“Vanessa.””
She sat down.
“I don’t understand.””
“Yes, you do.””
“No.””
She looked frustrated.
“You’re acting like I planned everything.””
“Didn’t you?””
Her eyes widened.
“Absolutely not.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She covered her face with her hands.
“I was meeting Ethan.””
My chest tightened.
“At the restaurant?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I wanted to end things.””
I stared at her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“It’s the truth.””
“You were meeting the man you were having an affair with to end the affair?””
“Yes.””
“During a family dinner?””
She looked ashamed.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds unbelievable because it is.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel, I was confused.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You weren’t confused. You were making choices.””
She looked down.
“I thought I could handle everything.””
“That’s the problem.””
I pointed toward the door.
“You thought about yourself.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know I hurt you.””
“You hurt Noah.””
She looked up.
“I never wanted that.””
“But you allowed it.””
The words were quiet.
But they were the truth.
She looked away.
Then she whispered:
“There’s something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“I wasn’t alone that night.””
I froze.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“Who was there?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
“Ethan was there.””
I stared at her.
“So Marcus was right.””
She looked confused.
“Marcus?””
“Never mind.””
I walked away.
My thoughts were spinning.
Ethan was there.
Ethan knew.
Ethan watched.
And somehow, my son ended up locked in a hot car.
I turned back.
“Where was Ethan when Noah was found?””
Vanessa looked nervous.
“He left.””
“Why?””
“He didn’t want to be involved.””
I laughed.
“He didn’t want to be involved?””
“No.””
“He was there when your son was trapped?””
“He didn’t know.””
“Are you sure?””
She didn’t answer quickly enough.
That was all I needed.
“You’re not sure.””
She looked angry.
“Daniel, what are you suggesting?””
“I don’t know.””
And that was the scariest part.
I didn’t know.
But I knew something was wrong.
Later that afternoon, I met Marcus at a coffee shop.
I showed him the picture.
He looked at it carefully.
“Where did you get this?””
“Someone sent it.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Marcus leaned back.
“Daniel, you need to be careful.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever sent this knows things.””
I looked at him.
“You think they’re helping me?””
Marcus shook his head.
“Not necessarily.””
“What do you mean?””
“Sometimes people reveal secrets because they want something.””
That thought had crossed my mind.
“What could they want?””
Marcus looked at the photo again.
“I don’t know.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
This time, there was no photo.
Just words.
“Check the security cameras from the restaurant parking lot.””
My blood ran cold.
Because whoever this person was…
They weren’t guessing.
They knew exactly what happened.
I looked at Marcus.
“I need to find those cameras.””
He nodded.
“And Daniel?””
“What?””
“Whatever you find…”
He paused.
“Be ready.””
I didn’t ask what he meant.
Because deep down, I already knew.
The truth I was searching for might not just destroy my marriage.
It might reveal something much darker.
That evening, I contacted the restaurant manager.
I told him there had been an incident involving my son and asked about security footage.
At first, he hesitated.
Then I explained.
A few minutes later, his voice changed.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“There is something you should know.””
“What?””
“We reviewed the footage after the police arrived.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“And?””
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Your wife was not the only person who walked away from that vehicle.””
My heart stopped.
“Who else?””
The manager took a breath.
“Someone else opened the car door before you arrived.””
I couldn’t speak.
Because suddenly, the story I thought I knew changed again.
Someone had been there.
Someone had seen my son.
Someone had chosen to leave.
And now I needed to know one thing.
May you like
Who was standing in that parking lot…
While my son was crying for help?
