Chapter 7: The Secret That Was Worth Killing For
Daniel could not move.
The phone was still pressed against his ear, but the call had already ended.
The voice was gone.
The warning remained.
*You were never supposed to survive.*
Those words repeated inside his mind like an alarm he could not shut off.
Ethan noticed his expression immediately.
“What did she say?””
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“Her name was Sarah Wallace.””
Ethan’s face changed.
“Sarah?””
“You know her?””
Ethan looked away.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is she?””
Ethan took a deep breath.
“She was Jonathan’s wife.””
The answer landed heavily.
“My uncle’s wife?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she say I wasn’t supposed to survive?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
And that silence frightened Daniel more than anything else.
“Ethan.””
The older man looked at him.
“There are things I didn’t tell you.””
Daniel almost laughed.
Of course there were.
Another secret.
Another person protecting him by hiding the truth.
“How many people have been deciding what I should know?””
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Everyone says that.””
The pain in his voice was obvious.
“Everyone says they protected me. My mother. Michael. You.””
He pointed toward the old farmhouse.
“But all they did was leave me standing in the middle of a story I never agreed to be part of.””
Ethan accepted the anger.
Because he knew Daniel had earned it.
“You’re right.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“I am?””
“Yes.””
Ethan’s voice was quiet.
“You have every right to be angry.””
For some reason, that made Daniel even more emotional.
Because he had spent his whole life surrounded by people who explained.
People who defended.
People who justified.
But nobody admitted they were wrong.
“What happened to Jonathan?””
Ethan walked toward the window.
“Your uncle was investigating money that was disappearing from the Wallace family business.””
Daniel frowned.
“My family owned a business?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
“Real estate. Investments. Properties.””
Ethan paused.
“Your grandmother built it over decades.””
“And Jonathan found something?””
“He found evidence that someone was moving money illegally.””
Daniel looked at the old documents.
“Who?””
Ethan’s expression became serious.
“That’s where things became dangerous.””
Daniel waited.
“Because the person responsible was someone close to the family.””
The room felt colder.
“Who?””
Ethan looked at him.
“Your grandmother’s closest advisor.””
Daniel frowned.
“Not family?””
“No.””
“Then why would my birth matter?””
Ethan looked at the photograph.
“Because Jonathan discovered that the missing money was connected to another secret.””
Daniel already knew.
His birth.
“What secret?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then:
“The man everyone believed was your father was not the only person who knew about you.””
Daniel stared.
“I don’t understand.””
“Michael knew.””
“I know.””
“But someone else knew too.””
Daniel waited.
“Someone who had power.””
“Who?””
Ethan looked toward the door.
Before he could answer, a loud knock interrupted them.
Both men froze.
Daniel immediately thought of the unknown caller.
The person watching them.
Ethan moved toward the window.
Then stopped.
“It’s Sarah.””
Daniel’s heart raced.
Ethan opened the door.
An older woman stood outside.
She looked exhausted.
Like someone who had spent years carrying a burden she could never put down.
Her eyes immediately found Daniel.
And the moment she saw him, tears filled them.
“Oh my God.””
Daniel stepped back.
Sarah covered her mouth.
“You look just like him.””
“Like who?””
She looked at Ethan.
Then back at Daniel.
“Jonathan.””
Daniel felt something strange.
He had spent his entire life searching for a connection to his past.
Now strangers were looking at him and seeing someone he never knew.
“Why did you call me?””
Sarah walked inside.
“Because I realized you were in danger.””
Daniel frowned.
“Danger from who?””
Sarah looked toward the window.
“Your mother.””
The answer made Daniel uncomfortable.
Not because he defended Victoria anymore.
But because he still loved her.
“She wouldn’t…”
He stopped himself.
Sarah noticed.
“You spent your whole life believing that, didn’t you?””
Daniel said nothing.
Sarah sighed.
“Jonathan did too.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She sat down slowly.
“Your uncle loved Victoria like a sister.””
“She was his sister.””
“Yes.””
Sarah looked at the floor.
“And he believed she was a good person.””
Daniel felt a strange sadness.
Because he understood that feeling.
Trusting someone because you needed them to be good.
“What changed?””
Sarah looked at him.
“She chose fear.””
The words reminded Daniel of the letter.
Fear.
Everyone kept using that word.
“She wasn’t always like this,” Sarah continued.
“Your mother?””
Sarah nodded.
“She was different before you were born.””
Daniel listened.
“She was kind. She cared about people. She believed love could fix anything.””
Sarah looked at Ethan.
“But after everything happened, she changed.””
“What happened?””
Sarah’s expression became painful.
“The night Jonathan disappeared.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“What happened that night?””
Sarah looked at Ethan.
He nodded.
“Tell him.””
She took a deep breath.
“Jonathan discovered the person stealing money from the family.””
“Who?””
Sarah looked directly at Daniel.
“Michael Carter.””
Daniel felt like someone had punched him.
“No.””
Sarah continued.
“He didn’t start it. But he knew.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Michael would never.””
Sarah’s eyes softened.
“I know what you believe.””
The words hurt.
Because they sounded exactly like something Daniel used to say about Victoria.
“He was a good man,” Sarah said.
“But good people can make terrible choices when they’re afraid.””
Daniel couldn’t speak.
Michael.
The man who raised him.
The man he loved.
The man who died as a hero in his memory.
A secret existed around him too.
“What did Michael do?””
Sarah looked at the documents.
“He helped cover up the truth.””
Daniel’s breathing became heavier.
“Why?””
“Because he believed he was protecting you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Another person.
Another excuse.
Another secret.
Sarah continued.
“Jonathan found out your birth threatened the entire arrangement.””
“What arrangement?””
She looked at him.
“The person controlling the money had made a deal.””
“With who?””
Sarah hesitated.
Then:
“With your mother.””
Daniel felt numb.
“No.””
Sarah nodded sadly.
“Victoria agreed to keep certain things hidden.””
“What things?””
“Your real identity.””
Daniel stared.
“My real identity?””
Sarah leaned closer.
“Daniel, your birth was not just a family secret.””
She lowered her voice.
“It was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That someone had committed a crime.””
Silence.
The old farmhouse seemed to hold its breath.
“What crime?””
Sarah looked at Ethan.
Then back at Daniel.
“Your grandmother’s death.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Sarah whispered:
“Everyone thought she died naturally.””
The words sent a chill through him.
“But Jonathan discovered she was murdered.””
Daniel stood suddenly.
“No.””
Sarah looked at him.
“He found evidence.””
“Who killed her?””
Sarah’s face filled with fear.
“The same person who wanted Jonathan silent.””
Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.
“Who?””
Sarah looked at him.
“Someone who has been watching your family for thirty years.””
The room went silent.
Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
He looked down.
One sentence appeared.
*Stop digging, Daniel. Your mother already lost one son. Don’t make her lose another.*
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
Because the message was not a threat from a stranger.
It was a warning from someone who knew his family.
Someone who knew Victoria.
Someone who knew exactly where to hurt him.
He slowly looked at Sarah.
“How did they know I was here?””
Nobody answered.
Because the terrifying truth was obvious.
May you like
Someone had been following them.
And they were closer than Daniel realized.
