Chapter 6: The Family Graveyard of Forgotten Names
Daniel read the message again.
Then again.
The words remained the same.
*Ask your mother why your uncle disappeared.*
Five simple words.
But they carried the weight of thirty years of silence.
His thumb hovered over the screen.
He wanted to call the number.
He wanted answers.
He wanted to know who had been watching his family from the shadows.
But something stopped him.
A feeling.
The same feeling he had ignored for years.
The feeling that told him something was wrong.
Only this time, he listened.
“Who sent that?”” Ethan asked.
Daniel looked up.
“I don’t know.””
Victoria’s face had gone completely pale.
Not the expression of someone confused.
The expression of someone who recognized danger.
Daniel noticed immediately.
“You know who it is.””
Victoria looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I am done hearing my name followed by an excuse.””
The words shocked her.
Because Daniel had never spoken to her like this.
Not when she criticized Emma.
Not when she crossed boundaries.
Not even when she insulted his wife.
But now everything was different.
Because this was no longer about an argument between two people.
This was about his entire identity.
“You knew someone might come looking for me,” Daniel said.
Victoria said nothing.
“That’s why you were so afraid.””
Still nothing.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Daniel, we need to leave.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because whoever sent that message knows you know the truth now.””
Daniel looked around the house.
The place where he had grown up.
The place where he had believed he was safe.
Suddenly every locked door felt different.
Every missing photograph.
Every unanswered question.
Every strange reaction from his mother.
They were no longer random.
They were pieces of a puzzle.
And someone had spent decades making sure he never put them together.
“I’m not running,” Daniel said.
Ethan studied him.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“But I understand what it feels like to have everyone else decide what I can handle.””
The words silenced Ethan.
Because he knew they were true.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“I’m going to find out who my family really is.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Daniel, please.””
He stopped.
For a moment, he almost turned around.
Because despite everything, she was still his mother.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who loved him in the only way she knew how.
But then he remembered Emma.
He remembered her sitting alone, afraid to tell him the truth because she already knew he would defend Victoria.
He remembered Lily crying.
And he remembered the promise he made.
I will protect you.
This time, that promise meant something different.
“I need space.””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“You’re choosing them over me?””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
His voice softened.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
He left.
The next morning, Daniel met Emma at the hospital.
She immediately knew something had happened.
“You found more.””
Daniel nodded.
He sat beside her and handed her the old letter.
Emma read it carefully.
Her expression changed with every line.
When she finished, she looked up.
“Daniel…”
“I know.””
She reached for his hand.
“What are you feeling?””
Daniel stared at the floor.
“Like my whole life belongs to someone else.””
Emma squeezed his fingers.
“Your life is still yours.””
He looked at her.
“Is it?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Because she understood.
For years, Daniel’s choices had been shaped by a story he never questioned.
Now that story was falling apart.
“I need to find out who sent the message.””
Emma nodded.
“Then we find out.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You’re not afraid?””
“I am.””
The honesty surprised him.
Emma continued.
“But I’m more afraid of living another year pretending everything is fine.””
Those words reminded him of how much she had carried alone.
“How long were you planning to leave?””
Emma looked down.
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
She had never answered that question before.
“Before Lily was born,” she whispered.
He looked at her.
“Really?””
She nodded.
“I packed a bag twice.””
Daniel felt like he couldn’t breathe.
“You were going to take Lily?””
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I felt trapped.””
Daniel looked away.
The pain was almost unbearable.
Not because she wanted to leave.
Because he understood why.
“I’m sorry.””
Emma shook her head.
“I don’t need apologies anymore.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What do you need?””
She held his gaze.
“I need you to believe me when something feels wrong.””
That was harder than any apology.
Because belief required change.
And Daniel knew he had spent years choosing comfort over truth.
“I will.””
Emma nodded.
But neither of them pretended everything was fixed.
Some wounds took longer than words to heal.
That afternoon, Daniel and Ethan drove to the old Wallace family property.
Ethan had avoided the place for decades.
Daniel noticed.
“You haven’t been here since you left?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Ethan looked through the windshield.
“Because every place holds memories.””
Daniel glanced at him.
“You missed me.””
Ethan was quiet.
Then:
“Every day.””
The answer surprised Daniel.
He expected anger.
Bitterness.
Resentment.
Instead, he heard sadness.
“What did you do all those years?””
Ethan smiled faintly.
“Survive.””
“That’s it?””
“That’s what people do when they lose something they can’t replace.””
Daniel looked out the window.
He didn’t know how to feel about this man.
Ethan was his father.
But he was also a stranger.
A stranger who knew more about him than he knew about himself.
When they arrived, the property looked abandoned.
An old farmhouse surrounded by trees.
The paint had faded.
The windows were covered with dust.
“This belonged to my parents,” Ethan said.
Daniel stepped inside.
The air smelled old.
Like forgotten memories.
Ethan walked toward a cabinet.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Daniel watched as he pulled out a small metal box.
“I kept these because I knew one day you would need them.””
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Newspaper clippings.
Daniel picked up one.
A headline caught his attention.
*LOCAL MAN MISSING AFTER FAMILY DISPUTE*
Below it was a photograph.
A young man.
Daniel stared.
There was something familiar.
“Who is this?””
Ethan looked at the picture.
“Your uncle.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“My uncle?””
“Yes.””
“What was his name?””
Ethan hesitated.
“Jonathan Wallace.””
Daniel studied the photograph.
“Why did nobody tell me?””
“Because your mother believed the truth would destroy you.””
Daniel looked at the newspaper again.
“What happened to him?””
Ethan sat down.
“Jonathan discovered something about your grandmother’s estate.””
“What?””
“Money was disappearing.””
Daniel frowned.
“And?””
“He confronted the wrong people.””
The way Ethan said it made Daniel uneasy.
“Who?””
Ethan looked at him.
“That’s the question no one answered.””
Daniel looked through the documents.
Then he found something.
A photograph.
His mother.
Young.
Standing beside Jonathan.
And another person.
Someone Daniel recognized.
He stared.
Because the third person in the picture was someone he had seen his entire life.
Michael Carter.
His father.
Daniel felt the room spin.
“Why was Michael there?””
Ethan looked at the photograph.
“That is the part your mother never wanted you to know.””
Daniel turned the picture over.
On the back was a date.
The year before he was born.
And a sentence written in black ink.
*The three people who knew the truth.*
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Three people?””
Ethan nodded.
“Your mother.””
“Michael.””
“And?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Daniel’s eyes moved back to the photograph.
There was one person missing.
One person who had been part of the secret.
“Who was the third person?””
Ethan’s face became serious.
“Someone who is still alive.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Who?””
Before Ethan could answer, his phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
The same number from the message.
Daniel answered.
No one spoke.
Only silence.
Then a voice.
An older woman.
A voice filled with fear.
“Daniel?””
He froze.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Sarah Wallace.””
Daniel’s heart raced.
“I knew your uncle.””
Silence.
“I know why he disappeared.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Tell me.””
The woman’s voice trembled.
“Because Jonathan found out the truth about your birth.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“What truth?””
The woman whispered:
“You were never supposed to survive.””
The call ended.
Daniel stood frozen.
Because for the first time, he realized the secret surrounding his family was not just about lies.
It was about something much darker.
May you like
Someone had not only hidden the truth.
Someone had been trying to bury it forever.
