Chapter 12: The Morning Everything Changed

I couldn’t speak.

The words didn’t make sense.

Vanessa was supposed to be driving?

No.

That wasn’t possible.

I remembered the accident.

I remembered my car.

I remembered the other driver.

I remembered the hospital.

But there was a missing piece.

A piece I had never questioned.

Because why would I?

Vanessa was my sister.

The person I trusted most.

“Daniel,” I said slowly.

“Tell me exactly what you mean.””

He exhaled.

“Before you had the accident, Vanessa called me.””

“When?””

“The night before.””

My heart raced.

“She was upset.””

I remembered.

She had called me too.

“She said she was angry with you.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought you were interfering.””

“With what?””

“With her relationship.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice was heavy.

“She thought you were trying to stop the wedding.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“But I never did that.””

“I know.””

“Why would she think that?””

“Because someone told her.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then:

“Her friend.””

I closed my eyes.

“Laura?””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

The pieces were connecting.

“Wait.””

I stood up.

“Laura said Vanessa planned the pool incident.””

“Yes.””

“Then why is she involved in this?””

Daniel paused.

“Because Laura was scared of Vanessa too.””

I sat back down.

“What happened that morning?””

Daniel sighed.

“Vanessa was supposed to pick you up.””

I remembered.

She had offered.

She had insisted.

But that morning, she canceled.

She said she was too tired.

I drove myself.

The accident happened twenty minutes later.

“Why didn’t she drive me?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer bothered me.

Because suddenly everything had too many questions.

“What does she have to do with the accident?””

“I don’t know.””

“Daniel.””

“I swear.””

I believed him.

But that didn’t make me less afraid.

After the call, I searched through old messages.

Months of conversations.

Finally, I found it.

The morning of the accident.

Vanessa:

*Sorry. I can’t pick you up. Something came up.*

My reply:

*No problem. I’ll drive.*

Her response:

*Okay. Be careful.*

At the time, I thought nothing of it.

Now those words felt different.

Be careful.

Not:

I’m sorry.

Not:

I wish I could come.

Just:

Be careful.

I called Vanessa.

She answered quickly.

“Emily.””

Her voice sounded nervous.

“You know.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What?””

“You know about the accident.””

Silence.

That was enough.

“Vanessa.””

“Who told you?””

My heart broke.

Not because she admitted it.

Because she didn’t deny it.

“What happened that morning?””

“Emily…”

“What happened?””

She started crying.

“I was angry.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

“Because I thought you hated me.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“I never hated you.””

“I know that now.””

“No. You don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to say that after everything.””

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

I laughed.

“You keep calling everything mistakes.””

She cried harder.

“I was confused.””

“You were jealous.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I was jealous.””

“And?””

“And I said things I didn’t mean.””

“What things?””

Silence.

Then:

“I told Laura I wished you would stop being everyone’s favorite.””

My stomach twisted.

“And the accident?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared me.

“What do you mean?””

“I don’t know.””

“Were you supposed to drive me?””

“Yes.””

“Why did you cancel?””

“I wanted you to be upset.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I wanted you to feel like nobody was always available for you.””

The room went silent.

“You wanted to punish me.””

“I didn’t think you would get hurt.””

Those words destroyed me.

Because that was exactly the problem.

She didn’t think.

She acted.

She wanted to hurt me emotionally.

And reality hurt me physically.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked out the window.

The sky was dark.

“I spent months wondering why this happened to me.””

“Emily…”

“I wondered if I did something wrong.””

“No.””

“But maybe I did.””

“What?””

“I trusted you.””

She went quiet.

That was the only thing I blamed myself for.

Trusting someone who kept proving she didn’t deserve it.

“I never wanted this,” Vanessa whispered.

I closed my eyes.

“Maybe not.””

A pause.

“But you wanted something else.””

“What?””

“You wanted me to hurt.””

She didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

After the call ended, I sat there.

Not crying.

Not angry.

Just empty.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*I found the last piece of evidence.*

Attached was a video.

Not from the pool.

Not from the hotel.

From the morning of my accident.

I pressed play.

And within seconds, I saw Vanessa.

Standing beside my car.

May you like

Doing something I never expected.

Something that changed everything.
