Chapter 11: The Truth Behind My Accident

I drove to my parents’ house without thinking.

I don’t remember the entire drive.

I only remember my hands gripping the steering wheel.

My mind replaying every moment.

The accident.

Vanessa’s behavior.

The secret documents.

The missing pieces.

When I arrived, my mother was waiting outside.

She looked terrified.

Not of me.

Of what she had to tell me.

“Emily.””

I walked past her.

“Where are the documents?””

She followed me inside.

“Please sit down.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I’m done sitting down while everyone else decides what I can handle.””

That hurt her.

I saw it.

But it was true.

My entire life, people had protected me by hiding things.

They called it kindness.

But secrets were not kindness.

They were control.

My mother went to a drawer and pulled out a folder.

The same kind of folder I had seen in the photo.

She placed it on the table.

“I found this in Vanessa’s room.””

I opened it.

The first pages were my medical records.

My hospital information.

My therapy notes.

Nothing unusual.

Then I saw a printed email.

My heart stopped.

It was from the insurance company.

The date was two months after my accident.

The subject:

*Claim Review Update.*

I read the message.

Then read it again.

“What is this?””

My mother sat down.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Mom.””

“I swear.””

I looked at her.

“Then tell me what you know.””

She swallowed.

“Vanessa contacted the insurance company.””

My hands went cold.

“Why?””

“She asked questions about your settlement.””

I stared.

“My settlement?””

“Yes.””

“Why would she care?””

My mother looked away.

And suddenly, I understood.

“No.””

She started crying.

“Emily.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Are you saying Vanessa was interested in my accident money?””

“I don’t know.””

“But she contacted the insurance company.””

“Yes.””

The room spun.

I thought about all those months.

Vanessa visiting me.

Bringing flowers.

Posting about family.

Acting supportive.

Was any of it real?

I grabbed another paper.

There was a note.

Handwritten.

Not mine.

Not my mother’s.

Vanessa’s.

*If Emily gets the settlement, she’ll never understand how unfair this is.*

My heart broke.

Not because of money.

Because of what the sentence revealed.

She didn’t see me as her sister.

She saw me as someone who had something she wanted.

“What else?””

My mother looked terrified.

“There’s more.””

Of course there was.

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“There’s always more.””

She handed me another document.

This one was older.

Before my accident.

It was an email between Vanessa and a financial advisor.

I read the first line.

Then stopped.

*Regarding potential access to family assets...*

I looked at my mother.

“What is this?””

“She was asking about inheritance.””

I stared.

“She was planning?””

“No.””

My mother shook her head.

“I don’t think she had a plan.””

“Then what?””

“I think she was angry.””

“At me?””

“At everyone.””

I sat down.

The anger inside me was fighting with sadness.

Because part of me still wanted an explanation.

Something that made Vanessa less cruel.

But every answer made things worse.

“She thought I had everything.””

My mother nodded.

“She thought everyone chose you.””

I looked at the documents.

“She never asked why.””

“No.””

“She never asked how much I suffered.””

“No.””

“She just decided I was lucky.””

My mother cried quietly.

And for the first time, I didn’t feel responsible for comforting her.

I was tired.

So tired.

“I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Did Vanessa know the accident could affect my future financially?””

My mother hesitated.

“Yes.””

The answer destroyed something inside me.

Because suddenly the pool made sense.

The anger.

The jealousy.

The cruelty.

Vanessa didn’t just see my injury.

She saw everything she believed I had taken from her.

Attention.

Sympathy.

Support.

Money.

And instead of admitting she was jealous…

She punished me for existing.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*Are you okay?*

I looked at it.

Then typed:

*No.*

For once, I didn’t pretend.

A few seconds later:

*What happened?*

I stared at the screen.

Then wrote:

*I found out Vanessa wasn’t just jealous. She was watching what I had.*

His reply came quickly.

*Emily… I need to tell you something too.*

My heart sank.

Not again.

Not another secret.

I called him.

“What?””

He was quiet.

“Daniel?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

“A message Vanessa sent before the wedding.””

“What message?””

His voice lowered.

“One where she said she needed to make you look unstable.””

The room became silent.

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid you would tell people the truth.””

I closed my eyes.

“About what?””

A long pause.

Then:

“About something that happened the week before your accident.””

I held my breath.

“What happened?””

Daniel whispered:

“She was supposed to be the one driving your car that morning.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“Emily…”

May you like

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Vanessa knows more about your accident than she ever told you.””
