Chapter 7: The Bloodline That Made Him a Target

Daniel stood motionless.

He had heard threats before.

As a businessman, he had faced competitors who wanted him to fail. He had dealt with angry clients, aggressive negotiations, and people who tried to take advantage of his success.

But nothing had prepared him for this.

Because this wasn’t about money.

It wasn’t about a house.

It wasn’t even about a company.

It was about him.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“Why?””

His voice was quiet.

“Why would anyone want me?””

Margaret looked down.

For a moment, she looked less like a strong woman who had survived decades of secrets and more like a mother who was afraid she had failed her child.

“Because of your grandfather.””

Daniel frowned.

“My grandfather?””

Jonathan nodded.

“Your grandfather was the beginning of everything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I never even knew him.””

“That was intentional.””

“Why?””

Jonathan walked toward the table and picked up the old photograph.

The one showing his younger self beside Richard Hale.

“There are families who build businesses.””

He looked at Daniel.

“And there are families who build influence.””

Daniel said nothing.

“Your grandfather, Edward Carter, belonged to the second kind.””

The name felt strange.

Edward Carter.

A man Daniel had never heard discussed.

A man who somehow controlled the direction of his entire life.

“He wasn’t just a businessman,” Jonathan continued.

“He understood power. Connections. Information.””

Daniel frowned.

“That sounds like a polite way of saying he was dangerous.””

Jonathan didn’t deny it.

“Your grandfather made enemies.””

“What kind of enemies?””

“The kind who don’t forgive.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Edward made decisions that affected many people.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Good decisions or bad ones?””

She hesitated.

And Daniel noticed.

“That hesitation tells me everything.””

Margaret looked at him sadly.

“Your grandfather was complicated.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“That seems to be the Carter family tradition.””

Nobody responded.

Because he was right.

Every person in his family had a version of the truth.

Every person had chosen what he was allowed to know.

Jonathan opened the folder again.

“There was something Edward created before he died.””

“A company?””

“No.””

Jonathan pulled out a document.

“A record.””

Daniel took it.

The pages were old.

Hundreds of names.

Dates.

Signatures.

“What is this?””

“A ledger.””

“For what?””

Jonathan looked at him.

“For everyone who helped build Carter Holdings.””

Daniel scanned the pages.

Then stopped.

Near the bottom was a section marked with a different title.

*The Guardian List.*

“What is this?””

Jonathan’s expression changed.

“That is why Richard wants you.””

Daniel looked up.

“Explain.””

“Your grandfather created a system.””

“A system?””

“A way to protect everything he built if something happened to him.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would he need that?””

Jonathan’s answer was simple.

“Because he knew someone would eventually try to destroy it.””

Daniel looked back at the ledger.

“And I’m part of this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Jonathan pointed to the page.

Daniel followed his finger.

There was his name.

Not his father’s.

Not his grandfather’s.

His.

*Daniel Edward Carter.*

He stared.

“My middle name.””

Jonathan nodded.

“Your grandfather named you after himself.””

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“You never told me.””

“I wanted you to have your own identity.””

Daniel looked back at the page.

“But someone else knew.””

“Yes.””

“Richard.””

Jonathan nodded.

“He knew your grandfather left everything connected to you.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What exactly did he leave me?””

Jonathan took a breath.

“The truth.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

“Everyone keeps saying that like it’s some treasure.””

Jonathan looked at him.

“Because it is.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t understand.””

Jonathan placed another document on the table.

“This contains information about people who were involved with Richard’s crimes.””

Daniel looked down.

Names.

Companies.

Transactions.

Evidence.

“He spent years trying to find this.””

“And my grandfather gave it to me?””

“No.””

Jonathan looked at him.

“He gave it to your mother.””

Daniel turned.

Margaret looked away.

The realization hit him.

“Mom.””

She said nothing.

“You had this the entire time?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped back.

“All these years?””

“I was waiting.””

“For what?””

“For the right moment.””

Daniel stared.

“There was never a right moment.””

Margaret looked heartbroken.

“I know.””

The honesty made it worse.

Daniel turned away.

He needed space.

He needed air.

Everything was too much.

His father.

His wife.

His mother.

His grandfather.

A family history built on secrets and fear.

Then Vanessa spoke softly.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t turn.

“What?””

“There’s something I need to tell you.””

He closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another revelation.

“Go ahead.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“The man who contacted me wasn’t Richard.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

“I thought it was.””

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa looked at Jonathan.

“He used Richard’s name.””

Jonathan immediately became alert.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stared.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“You have lied about everything.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“But this is different.””

She reached into her purse again.

This time she pulled out a small device.

A recording.

“I saved this.””

Jonathan took it.

He pressed play.

A man’s voice filled the room.

Distorted.

Unknown.

“You have one job. Stay close to Daniel. Make sure he never finds the ledger.””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

The recording continued.

“If he discovers the truth, you know what happens.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What happens?””

Vanessa looked down.

“They threatened my family.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“My father wasn’t just in debt.””

She swallowed.

“He disappeared.””

Nobody spoke.

“When I refused to cooperate, they made him disappear.””

Daniel stared.

“And you never told me?””

“I was ashamed.””

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

The words came quietly.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just broken.

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, he saw something beyond guilt.

He saw fear.

Real fear.

Jonathan listened to the recording again.

Then his expression changed.

“I know this voice.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Who?””

Jonathan replayed it.

The distorted voice.

The breathing.

The tone.

Then he whispered:

“Someone who should be dead.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

Jonathan stared at the device.

“This voice belongs to Thomas Carter.””

Margaret gasped.

Daniel looked between them.

“Who is Thomas Carter?””

Jonathan’s face darkened.

“Your uncle.””

Daniel froze.

“I don’t have an uncle.””

Jonathan nodded slowly.

“That’s what everyone was supposed to believe.””

The room felt colder.

“How many secrets does this family have?””

Jonathan didn’t answer.

Because even he seemed tired of the truth.

Margaret whispered:

“Thomas was your father’s older brother.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why did you hide him?””

Margaret’s expression changed.

“Because Thomas was dangerous.””

“What did he do?””

Jonathan answered.

“He tried to take control of Carter Holdings.””

“And?””

“He failed.””

Daniel looked at the recording.

“But he’s alive.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Nobody knew.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

Another unknown message.

Daniel opened it.

A picture appeared.

His entire body went cold.

It was a photo of his mother.

Taken earlier that day.

Before he came home.

Margaret sitting alone in the living room.

The message underneath was short.

*I warned you not to open the door.*

Daniel looked toward the windows.

Then the hallway.

Then the locked front entrance.

Someone had been inside.

Someone had been close.

Someone had been watching his family from the beginning.

A second message appeared.

*Bring me the ledger, or your mother disappears next.*

Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.

Jonathan saw his expression.

“What did they say?””

Daniel looked at his father.

Then at Margaret.

Then at Vanessa.

For the first time that night, he wasn’t confused.

He wasn’t lost.

He wasn’t searching for answers.

He knew exactly what he had to do.

“They want the ledger.””

Jonathan shook his head.

“That’s what they expect.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

His voice was different.

Stronger.

“They expect the old Daniel.””

Jonathan watched him carefully.

“The man who trusted everyone.””

Daniel looked at the document in his hand.

“The man who believed this house was just a house.””

He folded the ledger carefully.

“But they don’t know me anymore.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked toward the darkness outside.

“Because now I know the truth.””

Jonathan nodded slowly.

And for the first time, he saw not a child he had failed to protect.

But a man ready to fight.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

No one had touched it.

A figure stood outside.

Holding a folder.

Daniel stepped forward.

The stranger spoke one sentence.

“Your father told me you would be ready when the time came.””

Daniel stared.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Jonathan.

Then Margaret.

Then finally Daniel.

“My name is Samuel Reed.””

He held out the folder.

“And I was your grandfather’s last guardian.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“What guardian?””

Samuel looked at the ledger.

“The one person who knows why your grandfather chose you.””

A pause.

May you like

Then he said:

“And why Richard Hale has been afraid of you since the day you were born.””
