Chapter 6: The Confession Margaret Never Wanted to Make

The three words written on the wall seemed to burn into Daniel’s mind.

*ASK YOUR MOTHER.*

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The house was silent again.

But it was no longer the silence of fear.

It was the silence before a storm.

Daniel stared at the message.

His father stood nearby, tense and furious.

Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.

And Margaret…

Margaret looked like she had finally reached the moment she had spent decades trying to avoid.

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

“Mom.””

She didn’t answer.

His voice became harder.

“What does he mean?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

Because he already knew.

The answer was something she had been carrying for years.

Something she had hoped would die with her.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

“I wanted you to have a normal life.””

Daniel shook his head.

“A normal life?””

He pointed around the room.

“This is what you call normal?””

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“I wanted you to grow up without fear.””

“But I grew up without the truth.””

The words hurt her.

Daniel saw it.

But he couldn’t stop.

Not anymore.

“Everyone keeps telling me they were protecting me.””

His voice cracked.

“But nobody ever asked if I wanted to be protected from my own life.””

Jonathan looked away.

Even he knew Daniel was right.

Margaret reached for the blanket over her legs.

Her hands trembled.

“I need to tell you everything.””

Daniel waited.

Finally.

The truth.

But before she began, she looked at Jonathan.

“You should hear this too.””

Jonathan frowned.

“What?””

Margaret took a deep breath.

“Because there are things you never knew.””

The statement surprised him.

Daniel noticed.

His father, the man who seemed to know everything, suddenly looked uncertain.

Margaret looked toward the old photograph still sitting on the table.

The photograph of Jonathan and Richard.

“The night Jonathan disappeared…”

She paused.

Daniel listened.

“I lied.””

Nobody moved.

Jonathan stared at her.

“What?””

Margaret swallowed.

“You didn’t leave because you were forced to.””

Jonathan’s face changed.

“Margaret.””

“You left because you believed I betrayed you.””

The room became completely silent.

Daniel looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Margaret looked at Jonathan.

“Tell him.””

Jonathan’s expression hardened.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Knew what?””

Jonathan stepped back.

For the first time since entering the house, he looked genuinely hurt.

“Margaret.””

She whispered:

“I knew Richard was planning something.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Planning what?””

Margaret continued.

“Your father had discovered that Richard was stealing from the company. He was going to expose him.””

Jonathan nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“But Richard knew.””

“And?””

Margaret looked at him.

“He knew you had a weakness.””

Jonathan’s expression changed.

Daniel noticed.

“What weakness?””

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“You.””

The answer was immediate.

Jonathan went still.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Margaret nodded.

“Richard knew the one thing your father could never risk was losing his son.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“So he threatened me?””

“Yes.””

Jonathan’s jaw tightened.

Margaret continued.

“Richard threatened to hurt you if Jonathan went to the authorities.””

Daniel looked at Jonathan.

“And you left?””

Jonathan’s eyes filled with regret.

“I thought I could protect you by disappearing.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You let me believe you abandoned me.””

“I know.””

“You let me hate you.””

“I know.””

The pain in Jonathan’s voice was real.

But Daniel wasn’t ready to forgive.

Not yet.

Margaret continued.

“There was another problem.””

“What?””

She looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa immediately looked away.

Daniel noticed.

“Why are you looking at her?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Because she is part of the reason the truth stayed hidden.””

Daniel turned slowly.

“Vanessa?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s disappointment returned.

Margaret continued.

“After Jonathan disappeared, Richard started looking for the trust documents.””

“The documents that belonged to me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if you reached adulthood and claimed ownership, Richard would lose control of everything.””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“So he spent years trying to stop me.””

Margaret nodded.

“He tried many times.””

“How?””

Her silence answered before her words did.

“Your accidents.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Jonathan stepped forward.

“Margaret.””

She looked at him.

“He deserves the truth.””

Daniel’s breathing became heavier.

“What accidents?””

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“When you were seventeen, your car brakes failed.””

Daniel remembered.

The crash.

The hospital.

Everyone called it bad luck.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

Daniel stared.

“What else?””

“When you were twenty-three, someone broke into your apartment.””

Daniel felt numb.

“That was random.””

“No.””

Margaret shook her head.

“It wasn’t.””

Daniel stepped back.

All the strange moments in his life.

All the things he ignored.

All the times people told him he was unlucky.

Suddenly, they looked different.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried, something happened.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Margaret looked at Jonathan.

“Your father and I made a plan.””

Jonathan nodded.

“We were going to tell you everything on your twenty-fifth birthday.””

“But?””

“But someone found out.””

Daniel looked around.

“Who?””

Jonathan answered quietly.

“Richard.””

Daniel looked toward the empty hallway.

The man who had just walked into his home.

The man who knew everything.

“What did he do?””

Jonathan’s face darkened.

“He made sure the truth disappeared again.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“And where do you fit into this?””

Vanessa looked devastated.

“I was manipulated.””

Daniel said nothing.

She continued.

“My father was sick. He had debts.””

“What did Richard do?””

“He offered to help.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“But the help came with a condition.””

“What condition?””

“That I stay close to you.””

The room froze.

Daniel stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa could barely speak.

“Richard wanted someone near you.””

“To watch me?””

“Yes.””

Daniel felt like he had been punched.

“You married me because of him?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“At first, maybe I thought I was doing what I had to do.””

Daniel looked at her.

“But?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“But then I actually fell in love with you.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel wanted to reject it.

He wanted to say it didn’t matter.

But some part of him remembered the years they shared.

The moments that felt real.

The laughter.

The promises.

The life they built.

Then he remembered the lies.

“And the house?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I was supposed to get control of it.””

“Through my mother?””

“Yes.””

“Through that power of attorney?””

She nodded.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You were going to take everything.””

“I was scared.””

“You were willing to destroy my family.””

“I thought I was saving us.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were saving yourself.””

The words silenced her.

Then suddenly Jonathan’s phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Jonathan checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Daniel noticed.

“Who is it?””

Jonathan didn’t answer.

The phone continued ringing.

Finally, he answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his face turned pale.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Jonathan slowly lowered the phone.

“That was Richard.””

Everyone froze.

“What did he say?””

Jonathan looked at Daniel.

“He said the game is over.””

Daniel felt cold.

“What game?””

Jonathan looked toward the wall.

At the message.

*ASK YOUR MOTHER.*

Then he said:

“He said Margaret knows the final secret.””

Daniel turned toward his mother.

“Final secret?””

Margaret looked terrified.

Jonathan whispered:

“The secret about who you really are.””

Daniel stared.

Again.

That impossible sentence.

Who you really are.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret’s hands shook.

She looked at her son.

The little boy she spent her life protecting.

The man standing before her now.

Finally, she spoke the words she had feared for thirty years.

“Daniel…”

Her voice broke.

“You were never supposed to inherit your father’s fortune.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then what?””

Margaret looked at Jonathan.

Then back at Daniel.

“You were supposed to inherit his enemies.””

The room went silent.

And Daniel realized something terrifying.

His father hadn’t been hiding the truth to protect a legacy.

He had been hiding it to protect Daniel from becoming the next target.

Then Margaret whispered the final words:

“Because Richard Hale didn’t want your father’s company.””

May you like

She looked at Daniel.

“He wanted you.””
