Chapter 7: The Mother’s Final Secret

The name hung in the hidden room like a warning.

Your mother.

Emily stared at Victor.

For a moment, she forgot about the people outside.

Forgot about the door shaking.

Forgot about the danger.

Because those two words were impossible.

Her mother.

The woman who had spent the last years of her life sick, exhausted, and struggling to survive.

The woman Emily remembered lying in bed, barely strong enough to speak.

The woman who cried when Daniel disappeared.

The woman who told Emily that sometimes people left because they had no choice.

That woman?

She had been part of this?

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“No, you’re wrong.””

Victor didn’t look away.

“I wish I was.””

“She didn’t know anything.””

Emily’s voice became sharper.

“She wasn’t involved in this.””

Victor’s expression softened.

“Emily…”

“No.””

She stepped back.

“You didn’t know her.””

The words surprised everyone.

But Emily kept going.

“You knew my father. You knew these people. You knew secrets and missions and whatever this is.””

She pointed around the room.

“But my mother was just my mother.””

Her voice cracked.

“She took care of me.””

Nobody responded.

Because nobody wanted to be the person who broke the last piece of her certainty.

Razor looked at Victor.

“Explain.””

Victor glanced at the damaged door.

“We don’t have much time.””

Razor stepped closer.

“Explain anyway.””

Victor took a deep breath.

“Daniel and your mother were not just trying to survive after he disappeared.””

Emily stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your mother knew the truth.””

A loud crash interrupted them.

The hidden door shook violently.

Someone outside was getting closer.

Maria’s voice came through the radio.

“Jason, you have maybe two minutes.””

Razor grabbed the radio.

“Keep them busy.””

A pause.

Then Maria answered.

“Already doing that.””

Emily looked at Razor.

“She’s out there?””

He nodded.

“With Cole.””

Emily’s eyes widened.

“They stayed behind?””

Razor looked at her.

“They’re protecting you.””

The words affected her more than she expected.

She wasn’t used to people protecting her.

She was used to being the person who had to protect herself.

Victor walked toward a shelf.

He pulled out a small metal container.

Emily watched.

“What is that?””

“Something your mother left behind.””

Her entire body went still.

“My mother?””

Victor nodded.

“I found it after Daniel disappeared.””

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””

Victor looked at her.

“Because I didn’t know where you were.””

Emily looked away.

Another unanswered question.

Another missing piece.

“What’s inside?””

Victor opened the container.

Inside was a small necklace.

Emily immediately recognized it.

Her mother wore it every day.

A simple silver chain with a tiny round pendant.

Emily’s breath caught.

“She had that.””

Victor nodded.

“She gave it to Daniel the night he left.””

Emily stared.

“Why?””

Victor opened the pendant.

Inside was a tiny piece of paper.

Not a picture.

A message.

Emily leaned closer.

Three words.

Protect Emily Always.

Her vision blurred.

Her mother’s handwriting.

She knew it.

She had seen it on school forms.

Birthday cards.

Notes left on the kitchen counter.

Her mother’s handwriting.

Emily touched the pendant.

“She knew.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

Emily looked at him.

“She knew he was leaving?””

“Yes.””

“And she let him?””

Victor looked down.

“She didn’t want him to go.””

Emily’s eyes filled.

“Then why?””

Victor hesitated.

“Because Daniel believed staying would put you both in danger.””

Emily looked at the door.

“Who was dangerous enough that my family had to disappear?””

Nobody answered.

Then Razor spoke.

“Eleanor Voss.””

The name felt heavier now.

Emily looked at the screen.

The woman outside.

The person who had caused all of this.

Victor nodded.

“Eleanor controlled everything.””

“What does she want?””

Victor looked at the files around the room.

“Something Daniel discovered.””

“What?””

“The truth about her operation.””

Emily frowned.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

Victor looked at the jacket.

“The jacket.””

She touched the leather.

“What about it?””

“Your father hid evidence inside it.””

Emily looked confused.

“But I’ve had it for years.””

“Yes.””

“And nobody found anything?””

Victor shook his head.

“Because they weren’t looking for the right thing.””

Razor took the jacket from her carefully.

Emily immediately reached for it.

“Hey.””

“I’m not taking it.””

He turned it over.

“I’m checking something.””

He examined the seams.

The patches.

The inside lining.

Then he stopped.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Razor ran his fingers along the inside pocket.

“There’s another layer.””

Emily frowned.

“How?””

“Daniel was good with his hands.””

Victor almost smiled.

“He was better than good.””

Razor pulled out a small knife.

Emily immediately became tense.

“What are you doing?””

“Trust me.””

He carefully cut along the inside stitching.

A hidden compartment opened.

Everyone stared.

Inside was a small memory card.

Emily whispered.

“He hid it there.””

Victor nodded.

“Of course he did.””

Razor held it up.

“This is what Eleanor wants.””

The door shook again.

Harder.

Emily looked toward the entrance.

“We need to go.””

“Yes.””

Razor grabbed the memory card.

But before he could put it away, Victor stopped him.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Victor stared at the card.

“You don’t understand what that is.””

Razor frowned.

“What?””

Victor’s face was serious.

“That isn’t evidence.””

“Then what is it?””

Victor looked at Emily.

“It’s a list.””

Emily felt cold.

“A list of what?””

Victor answered quietly.

“Everyone who was involved.””

Silence.

Emily looked at the files.

At the photographs.

At all the secrets her father had collected.

“How many people?””

Victor looked toward the broken door.

“Enough that some of them will do anything to get it back.””

The hidden door cracked.

A voice came from the other side.

“Jason.””

Everyone froze.

The voice was calm.

Female.

Eleanor.

“You know this doesn’t have to end badly.””

Razor moved closer to the door.

“Funny coming from you.””

Eleanor continued.

“I’m not here for you.””

Everyone looked at Emily.

Her stomach dropped.

Eleanor’s voice softened.

“I’m here for Daniel’s daughter.””

Emily stepped back.

Victor immediately moved between her and the door.

“No.””

Eleanor laughed softly.

“You always did protect the wrong people, Victor.””

Emily looked at him.

The way he reacted.

The fear.

The anger.

It told her everything.

“You really cared about my father.””

Victor didn’t answer.

“You cared about my mother too.””

A pause.

Then Victor said:

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised her.

He looked at Emily.

“Your parents were the only family I ever had.””

The words landed.

Because suddenly Victor wasn’t just the villain from a photograph.

He was someone who had lost too.

Emily didn’t forgive him.

Not yet.

But she understood.

Sometimes people weren’t divided into heroes and villains.

Sometimes they were just people who made impossible choices.

The door broke open.

Everyone moved.

Razor pushed a hidden button on the wall.

A second passage opened.

“Go!””

Emily didn’t move.

“What about you?””

Razor looked at her.

“I’m coming.””

“What about Victor?””

Victor looked toward the entrance.

“I’ll slow them down.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“No more people disappearing.””

The sentence surprised even her.

She looked at Victor.

“My father disappeared.””

She looked at Razor.

“You almost did too.””

Her eyes hardened.

“I’m not watching anyone else make that choice.””

Razor stared at her.

For a moment, he saw Daniel.

Not the child Daniel left behind.

The person Daniel had raised.

Victor gave a quiet laugh.

“She really is his daughter.””

Razor nodded.

“Yeah.””

The group moved through the passage.

But before Emily entered, she looked back.

At the hidden room.

At the place where her father’s secrets had waited.

Then she saw something on the wall.

A small photograph she hadn’t noticed before.

Her father.

Her mother.

And Emily.

But written on the back was a date.

The day before Daniel disappeared.

Emily grabbed it.

There was a message.

One sentence.

She read it.

And her entire world shifted again.

Because it wasn’t from her father.

It was from her mother.

Emily,

If Daniel doesn’t come home, trust the girl with the red scarf.

Emily stared.

“What?””

Razor turned.

“What did you find?””

She held up the photograph.

“My mother wrote this.””

Victor looked confused.

“Who is the girl with the red scarf?””

Nobody knew.

Then the radio crackled.

Maria’s voice came through.

“Jason.””

Everyone stopped.

“What?””

A pause.

Then Maria spoke slowly.

“There’s someone here.””

Razor frowned.

“Who?””

Maria’s voice lowered.

“Someone I haven’t seen in fifteen years.””

Emily felt her stomach drop.

“Who?””

Maria didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“The girl with the red scarf.””

The tunnel went silent.

Because somewhere ahead of them…

May you like

Someone who had been missing for fifteen years was waiting.

And she knew Emily’s mother’s final secret.
