Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Emily’s Name

The woman on the security monitor stood perfectly still.

She didn’t shout.

She didn’t threaten them.

She didn’t need to.

There was something about the way she carried herself that made the entire room feel smaller.

She looked like someone who had spent years controlling situations before they ever began.

Emily stared at the screen.

“Who is she?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

The silence was becoming unbearable.

She turned around.

“Why does everyone always do that?””

Her voice echoed through the garage.

“Why does everyone look scared and then decide I’m not allowed to know why?””

Razor looked at her.

“Because we’re trying to keep you alive.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed toward the monitor.

“You’re trying to keep me away from the truth.””

The words hit everyone.

Because they were true.

Razor opened his mouth.

But nothing came out.

Emily looked at Victor.

“You know her.””

Victor didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

His face remained pale.

“Her name is Eleanor Voss.””

Emily waited.

That was it.

Just a name.

No explanation.

She frowned.

“And?””

Victor looked toward the monitor.

“She was the reason Daniel disappeared.””

The garage went silent.

Emily felt her heartbeat increase.

“Explain.””

Victor didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the security screen.

For the first time since she had met him, he looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

“Eleanor Voss built an organization that didn’t officially exist.””

Emily stared.

“What kind of organization?””

“The kind that solves problems.””

“That sounds like a nice way of saying something terrible.””

Victor looked at her.

“It is.””

Razor stepped closer.

“Daniel found out what she was doing.””

Emily looked at him.

“And he tried to stop her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Razor looked confused by the question.

“Because that’s who he was.””

Emily looked down.

A strange sadness filled her.

Because she was beginning to understand something.

Her father hadn’t disappeared because he stopped loving her.

He disappeared because he couldn’t ignore something wrong.

That was the same reason he had always helped strangers.

The same reason he fixed motorcycles for people who couldn’t afford repairs.

The same reason he brought home injured animals.

Daniel Rodriguez had always believed people mattered.

Even when it cost him.

Especially when it cost him.

Victor looked at the monitor.

“She knows we’re here.””

Maria’s voice came through the phone again.

“Jason, we need to move.””

Razor grabbed the phone.

“How many exits?””

“Two.””

“Both covered.””

Razor looked around.

“Any other way out?””

Maria hesitated.

“There is one.””

Everyone looked at her through the speaker.

“Where?””

“The old service tunnel.””

Emily frowned.

“What tunnel?””

Victor answered.

“Your father built it.””

She looked at him.

“My father?””

Victor nodded.

“He was always preparing for things nobody else thought about.””

Emily almost smiled.

“That sounds like him.””

Then she realized something.

“Wait.””

She looked at Victor.

“How do you know about it?””

Victor’s expression changed.

“Because I helped him build it.””

Before Emily could respond, a loud crash shook the garage.

Someone had hit the front door.

Everyone froze.

The people outside weren’t waiting anymore.

Razor looked at the others.

“Now.””

The group moved quickly.

Emily followed.

She hated that she was afraid.

But she was.

The old garage that had once represented safety now felt like a place where the walls were closing in.

They moved behind a row of shelves.

Razor pulled a hidden lever.

A section of the floor opened.

Emily stared.

“You’re kidding.””

“No.””

Razor looked at her.

“Your father loved surprises.””

Below them was a narrow staircase leading into darkness.

Emily looked down.

“You expect me to go in there?””

Razor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Does anyone else think this is insane?””

Cole raised his hand.

“Definitely.””

Emily looked at him.

“Thank you.””

He shrugged.

“But Daniel did build it.””

She sighed.

“Of course he did.””

One by one, they moved underground.

Victor stayed near the back.

Emily noticed.

“You’re watching the entrance.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at her.

“Because if they get through, I need to know.””

She studied him.

“You’re afraid of her.””

Victor didn’t pretend otherwise.

“Yes.””

That answer surprised her.

“Why?””

He looked ahead.

“Because I know what she does to people who disappoint her.””

The tunnel was narrow.

The air smelled like old concrete and dust.

Emily walked beside Razor.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then she finally asked:

“Did my father know he was going to disappear?””

Razor’s footsteps slowed.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“He knew?””

“He suspected.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Razor looked at her.

“Because he thought if you knew too much, you could become a target.””

Emily laughed softly.

“A target?””

She looked around the dark tunnel.

“Razor, I was already a target.””

He had no answer.

She continued.

“I lost my home. I lost my family. I lost everything.””

Her voice cracked.

“And nobody even told me why.””

Razor stopped walking.

Emily turned.

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Two simple words.

But they carried weight.

Not the kind of apology people gave because they were forced.

The kind people gave when they finally understood the damage they caused.

Emily looked away.

“I don’t know if that fixes anything.””

“It doesn’t.””

Razor nodded.

“But you deserve to hear it anyway.””

For a moment, the anger inside her softened.

Only slightly.

Then Victor spoke from behind them.

“We’re almost there.””

Emily looked back.

“Where does this lead?””

Victor answered.

“Somewhere Daniel believed nobody would find.””

A few minutes later, they reached another door.

Razor opened it.

They stepped into a hidden room.

Emily stopped.

The room was small.

But it was filled with things.

Maps.

Files.

Old photographs.

A radio.

A computer.

And on the wall…

Pictures of Emily.

Her breath stopped.

There were dozens.

Emily as a child.

Emily at school.

Emily playing in the yard.

Emily with her mother.

She slowly walked toward them.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Her voice became smaller.

“Why are these here?””

Razor looked at the wall.

“He was watching over you.””

Emily touched one photograph.

It showed her at ten years old, riding a bicycle.

She remembered that day.

Her father had taken the picture.

She remembered him laughing.

She remembered him saying:

“Don’t worry about falling. Everyone falls. The important thing is getting back up.””

A tear slipped down her face.

She quickly wiped it away.

Victor looked at the pictures.

“He never stopped loving you.””

Emily turned.

“Then why didn’t he come home?””

Victor looked away.

Because he knew.

He knew the answer.

Finally, he said:

“Because the night he disappeared, he found out someone close to him betrayed him.””

Emily looked at Razor.

Then Victor.

“Who?””

Victor didn’t answer.

The computer suddenly turned on.

Everyone turned.

The screen flickered.

A video file appeared.

No one touched it.

It started automatically.

A man appeared on the screen.

Emily froze.

Her father.

Daniel Rodriguez.

Older than she remembered.

Tired.

But alive.

Her hand covered her mouth.

Nobody spoke.

Her father looked directly into the camera.

“Emily.””

She stopped breathing.

Hearing his voice after three years was almost too much.

The recording continued.

“If you’re watching this, then things went worse than I expected.””

Emily stepped closer.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I need you to know something.””

Daniel looked down for a moment.

“I never wanted you involved in any of this.””

His voice shook slightly.

“But I also knew there might come a day when you had no choice.””

Emily whispered:

“Dad…”

Razor looked away.

Giving her the moment.

Daniel continued.

“The person you need to be careful of is not the person everyone thinks.””

Emily looked at Victor.

He stared at the screen.

Daniel’s next words changed everything.

“Victor Hale did not betray me.””

The room went completely silent.

Victor closed his eyes.

Like hearing those words hurt.

Daniel continued.

“He tried to protect me.””

Emily looked at Razor.

Confusion filled her face.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“The person who betrayed us was someone none of us suspected.””

A pause.

Someone knocked hard against the hidden room door.

Everyone froze.

The video continued.

“Emily, if you are watching this, there is one thing you must understand.””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“You cannot trust the people who claim they know me.””

Another crash.

The door shook.

Daniel continued.

“Not even the ones who say they loved me.””

The room went silent.

Because those words were not a warning about Victor.

They were a warning about everyone.

The screen flickered.

Then Daniel said one final thing.

“Find the person who gave me the jacket.””

Emily looked down.

The jacket.

Her father’s jacket.

Then the screen went black.

Everyone stood frozen.

Razor spoke first.

“What did he mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then the hidden room door began to crack.

Someone outside was breaking through.

Victor looked at the jacket.

His face changed.

“No.””

Emily looked at him.

“What?””

Victor stepped closer.

Slowly.

Like he was afraid of the answer.

“Your father didn’t give that jacket to you.””

Emily frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor looked at the old leather.

“The jacket was supposed to be destroyed.””

Razor stared.

“Victor.””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Emily.

“That means someone else put it where you could find it.””

The door cracked again.

A piece of wood fell.

Emily’s heart raced.

“Who?””

Victor stared at the jacket.

May you like

And whispered the name nobody expected.

“Your mother.””
