Chapter 9: The Person My Mother Tried to Protect Me From
I didn't sleep that night.
How could I?
Every answer created three more questions.
My father wasn't dead the way I had been told.
His closest friends weren't the only ones hiding secrets.
And now my aunt, the woman who disappeared after my mother died, was somehow connected.
I sat outside the farmhouse before sunrise.
The sky slowly changed colors.
For a few minutes, everything felt normal.
Then I remembered.
Normal was gone.
Razor came outside.
He handed me a cup of coffee.
I looked at it.
"I don't drink coffee.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
I looked at him.
"Then why?""
"Because Daniel always made coffee when he was thinking.""
That hurt.
Small memories were sometimes the most painful.
Not the big moments.
The little ones.
The things you couldn't get back.
"Tell me about him.""
Razor sat beside me.
"He was stubborn.""
I smiled slightly.
"Sounds right.""
"He was brave.""
A pause.
"And sometimes too brave.""
I looked down.
"Did he love me?""
Razor didn't hesitate.
"More than anything.""
I believed him.
And that scared me.
Because believing meant accepting how much I had lost.
Later that morning, Marcus showed us another file from the memory card.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Proof.
Victor's entire operation.
But one name appeared repeatedly.
A name none of us expected.
My mother's.
Elena Rodriguez.
I stared at the screen.
"No.""
Nobody spoke.
"That's impossible.""
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"We need to understand what this means.""
"My mother would never.""
I knew that.
I had watched her struggle.
I had watched her work three jobs.
I had watched her cry when she thought I wasn't looking.
She wasn't a criminal.
She was the person who stayed.
Razor looked at the document.
"Maybe Victor used her.""
"Or maybe she knew.""
I looked at Marcus.
The words hurt.
"Don't.""
He stopped.
Because he saw my face.
I wasn't defending a criminal.
I was defending the last parent I had left.
Then another file opened.
A video.
My mother.
Older.
Terrified.
She sat in front of the camera.
I felt my entire body go cold.
"Emily, if you're seeing this...""
Her voice shook.
"I'm sorry.""
Tears filled my eyes instantly.
"Mom...""
She continued.
"I wanted to tell you the truth.""
She looked away.
"But I was afraid.""
The video showed her holding an envelope.
"Your father trusted me with something.""
She whispered.
"And I failed him.""
My heart pounded.
"What did you do?""
She continued.
"I made a deal with Victor.""
Nobody moved.
I felt like the world had disappeared.
But then she said:
"Not to betray Daniel.""
A pause.
"To protect him.""
The room became silent.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
"Emily, if anyone tells you I helped hurt your father, they're lying.""
She wiped tears from her face.
"I helped him hide.""
Then she said the words that changed everything.
"Because Daniel was never trying to expose Victor.""
She leaned closer.
"He was trying to expose the person above him.""
The video stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Razor slowly looked at Marcus.
"Above Victor?""
Marcus nodded.
His face was pale.
"Victor was never the top.""
I felt a cold wave move through me.
"Then who is?""
Marcus looked toward the window.
Like he was afraid the answer itself could hear him.
Then he whispered:
"The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.""
A message appeared on the laptop.
A new file.
One we hadn't opened.
The title was simple.
*EMILY'S TRUTH*
Razor looked at me.
"Your father left that for you.""
My hands shook as I clicked it.
And when the file opened...
I saw a name.
A name that made every person in the room go silent.
May you like
Because the person who betrayed my father...
Was someone I had known my entire life.
