Chapter 12: The Midnight Deadline

The federal agents took Henry Bell and Richard into custody.

But the arrests brought no relief.

Not to Wade.

Not to Frank.

And certainly not to Martha.

Because Henry's final words continued echoing through the house.

The boy has until midnight to decide who gets to keep it.

Lucas sat at the kitchen table, staring at his laptop.

The screen displayed a banking interface he had never seen before.

There were several accounts.

Some were frozen.

Others were active.

And one contained a balance that made him physically sick.

$47,800,000.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

Emily stood behind him.

"What is it?""

Lucas turned the screen.

"Grandma's inheritance.""

Martha stared at the number.

"Forty-seven million dollars?""

Lucas nodded.

"That's what's left. The original trust was worth much more.""

Wade leaned over his shoulder.

"Who controls it?""

Lucas opened the account details.

"According to this, I do.""

Frank looked toward him.

"That can't be right.""

"It gets worse.""

Lucas clicked another tab.

A countdown appeared.

<text color="danger" weight="semibold" tabularNums>07:42:18</text>

"What's that?"" Emily asked.

"A deadline.""

"For what?""

Lucas swallowed.

"The account is scheduled to transfer at midnight. If I don't authorize the transaction, the system automatically sends the money to a secondary account.""

Frank moved closer.

"Whose account?""

Lucas read the name.

"Marcus Hale.""

Silence.

Martha sat down.

"So if you do nothing, this man gets everything.""

Lucas nodded.

"And if I authorize the transfer, I can redirect the money.""

Wade frowned.

"Then redirect it to the government.""

"I can't.""

"Why not?""

"Because the system requires a second authorization.""

Frank's expression changed.

"Whose?""

Lucas opened the authorization page.

A name appeared.

*MARTHA BELL.*

Martha stared.

"Mine?""

Lucas nodded.

"You're the original beneficiary. Your signature is required.""

Wade looked at Frank.

"How did Henry arrange this?""

Frank rubbed his forehead.

"Thomas Bell created the trust before he died. He designed it so nobody could access the money without approval from both the original beneficiary and the next surviving generation.""

Martha frowned.

"But I never signed anything.""

"Because your mother refused to let Henry take control.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Your mother knew what he would do. That's why she hid the original agreement.""

Martha looked at her sister.

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

"Because I didn't know where she hid it until Frank found the first clue.""

Frank looked toward the attic.

"The music box.""

Martha nodded.

"It's at my house.""

Wade glanced at the countdown.

"We need to get there.""

Duke shook his head.

"That's exactly what they want.""

"What do you mean?""

"Henry has been arrested, but his people are still out there. If they know about the trust, they'll be watching the house.""

Lucas closed his laptop.

"There's another way.""

Everyone turned.

"What?"" Frank asked.

Lucas explained that the trust's original documents had been scanned into an encrypted archive when the banking system was updated.

The archive contained the original beneficiary agreement, but it was locked behind a verification process.

If he could access it, he might be able to identify the second authorization holder and determine whether the deadline could be stopped.

Wade frowned.

"Can you do it?""

"Maybe.""

"How long?""

Lucas looked at the countdown.

"An hour. Maybe two.""

Frank shook his head.

"Then we don't have time to waste.""

At 8:15 p.m., they arrived at Martha's house.

Duke parked in the driveway while Wade and Frank checked the street.

Emily went inside with her mother.

The attic smelled of dust and cedar.

Old boxes were stacked beneath the sloping roof.

Martha climbed the wooden stairs slowly.

"I haven't been up here in years.""

Frank followed.

"Your mother loved this room.""

Martha smiled faintly.

"She used to hide Christmas presents up here.""

They searched through several boxes.

Old photographs.

Wedding decorations.

A broken clock.

Then Martha found the music box.

It was wrapped in a faded yellow scarf.

She carried it to the small window.

The wooden lid opened with a soft creak.

The familiar melody played.

Martha closed her eyes.

Her mother had played that tune every night when she was a child.

Frank examined the inside.

"There's something underneath.""

He removed a small velvet lining.

Beneath it was a folded paper.

Martha carefully unfolded it.

It was a letter written by her mother.

My darling Martha,

If you are reading this, then Henry has finally found the documents he spent his life searching for.

I need you to understand that Thomas did not leave the money to make you rich. He left it to protect the people who would come after us.

The trust was never meant to belong to one person. It was meant to expose the men who stole from our family and return what was taken.

Martha continued reading.

There is another name on the original agreement. Someone I trusted with my life.

She turned the page.

At the bottom was a handwritten name.

*WADE MERCER.*

Martha looked toward the attic entrance.

"Wade?""

He climbed the stairs.

"What's wrong?""

She showed him the letter.

Wade read the name twice.

"I don't understand.""

Frank took the paper.

His face changed.

"Thomas chose you.""

"Why?""

Frank shook his head.

"Because he knew you would never take the money for yourself.""

Wade looked at Martha.

"Did you know?""

"No.""

He stepped back.

"Then why am I listed?""

Frank examined the letter.

"Because you were the only person outside the family Thomas trusted.""

Wade shook his head.

"That's impossible. I barely knew him.""

Frank looked at him.

"You knew more than you realized.""

Before Wade could respond, Lucas called from downstairs.

"Grandma! I found something!""

They hurried down.

Lucas had opened the encrypted archive.

On the screen was the original trust agreement.

He pointed to the final page.

"Look.""

The agreement listed three authorized parties.

Martha Bell.

Wade Mercer.

And a third name.

Emily Bell.

Martha stared.

"Emily?""

Lucas nodded.

"The trust requires all three signatures.""

Emily looked confused.

"Why would I be involved?""

Frank leaned closer.

"Because Thomas knew you would eventually become a mother.""

Martha shook her head.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Lucas opened another document.

"This explains it.""

It was a letter from Thomas Bell.

The money must never be controlled by one generation alone. Martha represents the past. Wade represents loyalty outside the family. Emily represents the future.

Emily read the sentence aloud.

"Why Wade?""

Frank looked at him.

"Because Thomas knew about the old warehouse operation. He knew Richard would eventually try to take control.""

Wade's expression hardened.

"What did I have to do with that?""

Frank hesitated.

"Thomas believed you would be the only man Richard couldn't bribe.""

Wade stared at the screen.

Then he noticed something.

A fourth signature line.

It was blank.

Beside it was a note.

*FINAL AUTHORIZATION: ORIGINAL EXECUTOR.*

Lucas frowned.

"Who is the original executor?""

Frank slowly sat down.

"Thomas Bell.""

"But he's dead," Emily said.

Frank looked at the old letter.

"That's what we were told.""

Martha's hands began shaking.

The phone on the table rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

Frank answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

Old.

Calm.

Unmistakably familiar.

"Frank Bell. It's been a long time.""

Frank's face turned white.

Wade leaned closer.

"Who is it?""

The voice continued.

"I hear you've found the family again.""

Frank couldn't speak.

Martha reached for the phone.

"Who is this?""

The man laughed softly.

"Hello, Martha.""

Her heart stopped.

"Father?""

"Yes, little girl.""

Martha closed her eyes.

For the second time that day, she was hearing a voice she had believed belonged to a dead man.

But this time, the voice was not Henry's.

It was Thomas Bell.

Her biological father.

"I'm glad you're all together," Thomas said.

Martha gripped the phone.

"Where are you?""

"That doesn't matter.""

"You have no idea what you've done to this family.""

"I know exactly what I've done.""

"Why did you leave us?""

Thomas sighed.

"Because your mother made a deal with me.""

Martha stared at Frank.

"What deal?""

"She promised to keep you away from the inheritance. In exchange, I promised to stay out of your life.""

"Then why are you calling now?""

Thomas's voice became cold.

"Because the deadline is approaching.""

Lucas leaned toward the phone.

"Mr. Bell, I can stop the transfer if I get the original authorization.""

Thomas laughed.

"You don't understand, boy. The transfer isn't the danger.""

"What is?""

"The money has already been moved.""

Lucas froze.

Thomas continued.

"The account you see is only a decoy. The real money has been sitting in another location for thirty years.""

Wade frowned.

"Where?""

Thomas paused.

Then he answered:

"Inside the motorcycle.""

Everyone looked toward the old Harley.

Frank slowly stood.

"The fuel tank?""

"No," Thomas replied.

"The engine.""

Frank's face changed.

"That's impossible.""

"Your father built the compartment himself. You never knew it was there.""

Frank stared at the phone.

Then Thomas delivered the final blow.

"The money isn't what you're looking for, Frank. It's the names of every person who helped us.""

Martha swallowed.

"How many?""

Thomas answered without hesitation.

"Forty-three.""

Then he added:

"And one of them is sitting in your house right now.""

The call ended.

Everyone turned toward the hallway.

Eleanor was standing there.

Her face was pale.

In her hand was a small silver pistol.

She looked directly at Martha.

"I'm sorry, little sister.""

May you like

Then she pointed the weapon at Frank.

"Thomas was right. It's time to finish what we started.""
