Chapter 11: The Inheritance of Lies

"Is it true, Frank?""

Martha's voice was barely audible.

Frank stood in the doorway, his shoulders tense.

Henry watched him with quiet satisfaction.

"Tell her," Henry said.

"She deserves to know what kind of man she's been waiting for.""

Frank finally looked at Martha.

"Thomas Bell started the business. He made money moving stolen vehicles across state lines. I discovered it after I married you.""

Martha stared.

"And you knew?""

"I found out later. When Richard started working with Henry.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I wanted to protect you.""

Martha shook her head.

"That's what everybody says.""

Frank took a step toward her.

"Sweetheart—"

"Don't.""

The word stopped him.

For thirty years, she had dreamed of hearing his voice again.

Now that he was standing in front of her, she discovered there were questions she had never imagined asking.

"Did you ever work for them?""

Frank hesitated.

Henry laughed.

"Of course he did.""

Frank turned sharply.

"I worked for the dealership. I never moved stolen motorcycles.""

"But you signed the invoices.""

"Because I didn't know what was happening.""

Henry stepped closer.

"You knew enough.""

Frank looked at Martha.

"When I discovered the truth, I copied the records. I wanted to expose everything.""

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

"Because Collins was already working for Henry.""

Wade interrupted.

"Then why did you disappear?""

Frank closed his eyes.

"Because they threatened Martha and Emily.""

Martha looked away.

Henry placed the inheritance document on the table.

"Enough history. Sign it.""

Lucas picked up the paper.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

"Grandma, don't sign anything.""

Henry looked at him.

"Put that down.""

Lucas continued reading.

"This isn't an inheritance transfer.""

Richard frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Lucas pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"This document gives the signer responsibility for all outstanding financial obligations connected to the original Bell transportation trust.""

Wade leaned closer.

"What does that mean?""

Lucas looked at Henry.

"It means whoever signs becomes legally responsible for the missing money.""

Frank's expression changed.

Henry smiled.

"Very good.""

Lucas shook his head.

"You want Grandma to take the blame for everything.""

Henry's smile disappeared.

"I want the company protected.""

"By making her responsible for crimes committed before she was born?""

Richard stepped toward Lucas.

"Give me the document.""

Lucas held it away.

"No.""

Richard grabbed his backpack.

Wade immediately stepped between them.

"Let him go.""

Richard released the bag.

Henry sighed.

"You're all making this unnecessarily complicated.""

He pulled another document from his coat.

This one contained a photograph of Martha's mother.

It had been taken in the hospital shortly before her death.

Martha stared.

"Where did you get that?""

"Your mother left something behind. Something she should have given me.""

Frank looked at the photograph.

Then he looked at Henry.

"You told me she destroyed it.""

Henry smiled.

"She was smarter than you thought.""

He turned toward Martha.

"Your mother hid the original trust agreement. She left it somewhere only you could find.""

Martha shook her head.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Henry approached.

"Think about it. Your mother knew you would inherit everything. She left you a clue.""

Martha remembered a small wooden music box.

It had belonged to her mother.

She had kept it in the attic for decades.

The music box had always played the same tune.

And every year on her birthday, her mother had opened it and whispered:

One day, you'll understand why this belongs to you.

Martha looked at Frank.

"The music box.""

Frank nodded slowly.

"That's where she hid it.""

Henry's expression changed.

"Where is it?""

Martha said nothing.

Richard grabbed his phone.

"Tell the men outside to search the house.""

Henry raised a hand.

"Wait.""

He looked at Martha.

"Where is the box?""

"At my house.""

Henry smiled.

"Then we'll go there.""

Wade stepped forward.

"You're not taking her anywhere.""

Henry glanced toward the window.

"Look outside.""

Wade moved the curtain.

Three additional vehicles had arrived.

Men were getting out.

Duke's truck was nowhere in sight.

Henry smiled.

"Your friends are busy.""

Martha stared at him.

"Why do you need the trust so badly?""

Henry's expression changed.

For the first time, the old man looked genuinely angry.

"Because the money isn't mine anymore.""

Frank frowned.

"What?""

Henry turned toward him.

"Did you think Richard was working alone?""

Richard looked startled.

"Henry—"

"Be quiet.""

Henry pulled out a second photograph.

It showed a younger Henry standing beside another man.

The man wore a military uniform.

Wade recognized him immediately.

"That's General Marcus Hale.""

Frank nodded.

"He's been dead for years.""

Henry smiled.

"Another convenient funeral.""

Martha looked at the photograph.

"Who is he?""

Henry answered.

"The man who owns the people you've been fighting.""

Lucas suddenly looked at his laptop.

"Wait.""

He opened the banking records.

"Grandma, look at this.""

A series of payments appeared.

The latest transfer had been made that morning.

The money had moved from an offshore account into a company registered under a new name.

*HALE STRATEGIC HOLDINGS.*

Lucas looked at Henry.

"You're not protecting the inheritance.""

Henry's expression hardened.

"Stop digging.""

"You're trying to move the money before the government freezes the accounts.""

Henry turned toward Richard.

"Get the boy.""

Richard reached for Lucas.

But before he could touch him, a loud engine roared outside.

Then came the sound of several motorcycles.

Wade smiled.

"That's Duke.""

The front door flew open.

Duke entered with four other bikers.

Behind them were two federal agents wearing dark jackets.

One held up a badge.

"Nobody move!""

Henry's smile disappeared.

Richard raised his hands.

The agents quickly secured the room.

One approached Henry.

"Henry Bell, you're being detained pending investigation into financial fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice.""

Henry laughed.

"You don't have jurisdiction.""

The agent held up a document.

"Actually, we do.""

Wade turned toward Frank.

"Looks like we finally got them.""

Frank didn't smile.

He was staring at the second photograph.

The one showing General Hale.

"Something's wrong," he whispered.

Martha looked at him.

"What?""

Frank pointed to the date written beneath the photograph.

It had been taken three months earlier.

Martha's face went pale.

"That's impossible.""

Frank shook his head.

"No. It means Hale is alive.""

Then Henry began laughing.

The federal agents tried to move him, but he suddenly shouted across the room.

"You fools! You think arresting me ends this?""

He looked directly at Lucas.

"The boy has already inherited the money.""

Lucas froze.

May you like

Henry smiled.

"And he has until midnight to decide who gets to keep it.""
