Chapter 4: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The recording continued to hiss softly through the little speaker.
Then Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Tell me he's wrong.""
Vanessa's eyes darted toward Richard.
"Daniel, this is absurd. Your grandfather was sick. He was taking medication. He probably didn't know what he was saying.""
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
Thomas had been many things in his life. Stubborn, occasionally impossible, and far too proud to ask for help.
But he had never been confused about money.
Not once.
Daniel picked up the recorder.
"Grandma, is there more?""
I nodded.
"Your grandfather recorded several messages. I was instructed to keep them until the right moment.""
Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the table.
"Give me that!""
Daniel pulled the recorder away.
"Don't touch it.""
"You're letting an old recording destroy our wedding!""
"Our wedding?"" Daniel repeated.
"You just heard my grandfather accuse you of stealing from him.""
"He didn't accuse me. He said my name!""
"Then explain why.""
Vanessa looked toward the guests.
"This is a family matter. Everyone needs to leave.""
A woman near the front whispered, "She kicked his grandmother in front of everybody, and now she wants privacy?""
Another guest murmured agreement.
Vanessa heard them.
Her face turned red.
"Can everyone stop pretending they know what's happening?""
I slowly rose from my chair.
My hip protested, but I refused to remain seated while she tried to control the room.
"Vanessa," I said, "your grandfather-in-law was a careful man. He kept copies of everything.""
She turned toward me.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""
"No.""
I looked directly into her eyes.
"I'm grieving.""
That silenced her.
I continued.
"Thomas spent forty years building his business. He started with one rented workshop and a secondhand truck. When he discovered money missing, he didn't immediately accuse anyone. He investigated.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because your grandfather asked me to protect you from the investigation until there was enough evidence. He didn't want you growing up believing everyone around you was a thief.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"How noble. And convenient.""
Richard finally spoke.
"Mrs. Hayes, perhaps we should discuss the original trust deed.""
Vanessa spun around.
"Richard, shut up.""
The attorney stiffened.
Daniel noticed.
"Why are you speaking to him like that?""
Richard adjusted his glasses.
"Because there are documents I should have disclosed to you before this evening.""
Daniel stared.
"What documents?""
Richard reached into his briefcase and removed a thin folder.
"An application was filed with the county registry eight months ago. It requested a change in the trust's controlling beneficiary.""
Daniel looked at the paper.
His name appeared at the top.
But the signature underneath wasn't his.
He recognized the handwriting immediately.
It belonged to Vanessa.
"She forged my signature?""
Richard hesitated.
"That's what the handwriting examiner concluded.""
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"That's a lie!""
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"Why would you do that?""
She started crying.
"Because your grandmother was going to take everything!""
I looked at her.
"Everything that belonged to Daniel?""
"You don't understand!"" Vanessa shouted.
"Your husband made promises to my father!""
Richard stepped forward.
"Vanessa, stop.""
But she was no longer listening.
"My father worked for Thomas for seventeen years. He was promised a share of Willow Creek. Then Thomas died, and Margaret suddenly controlled everything!""
Daniel frowned.
"Grandma never controlled the trust. I was the beneficiary.""
"Exactly!"" Vanessa cried.
"You were the beneficiary. And I was going to be your wife!""
The words hung in the air.
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"So you planned to marry me, get access to the trust, and take control of the property?""
"I loved you!""
"Then why forge my name?""
Vanessa looked toward the ballroom doors.
Two security officers had appeared.
One of them approached Richard.
"Sir, we've received a request to remove Mrs. Hayes.""
Richard glanced at me.
"She's the victim, not the problem.""
The security officer nodded.
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she turned back to Daniel.
"You're going to believe them over me?""
Daniel looked at the champagne stains on my cardigan.
He looked at my bruised wrist.
Then he looked at the woman standing in front of him.
"I don't know who you are anymore.""
She reached for his hand.
He stepped away.
And for the first time that evening, I saw genuine fear in her expression.
But the worst was still waiting.
Richard opened his folder again.
"Daniel, there's another issue.""
"What now?""
"The original trust deed wasn't simply stolen. It was replaced.""
Daniel frowned.
"Replaced with what?""
Richard removed a photocopy.
The document listed a new controlling entity.
A company called Cole Heritage Holdings.
Vanessa's father had established it three months before Thomas died.
Daniel stared at the page.
"How much of Willow Creek did they transfer?""
Richard swallowed.
"On paper? All of it.""
May you like
And then he added something that made my grandson grip the table.
"The transfer was recorded the morning after your grandfather's funeral.""
