Chapter 12: What Really Happened in Room 407
Patricia agreed to meet us at the police station the following morning.
She arrived carrying a worn leather handbag and a small folder.
She was seventy years old, with silver hair and a nervous habit of rubbing her wedding ring.
When she saw me, she began crying.
"I'm sorry.""
I took her hand.
"Please. Just tell me what happened.""
She sat down.
Detective Harris switched on the recorder.
Patricia took a breath.
"Eleven years ago, I was working the night shift at St. Mary's. Your husband was in Room 407.""
I nodded.
"I remember.""
"He was receiving medication for his heart condition. Around eleven o'clock, I noticed that the medication bag had been replaced.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Replaced with what?""
Patricia looked at the detective.
"A different solution. It wasn't the medication prescribed by his doctor.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did you test it?""
"I tried. But by the time I returned with the equipment, the bag had disappeared.""
Detective Harris wrote something down.
"Did you see who replaced it?""
Patricia opened her folder.
She removed a photograph.
It showed Evelyn standing beside Thomas's hospital bed.
Michael was visible in the background.
"Your sister told me she was helping your husband because he was uncomfortable. She said she was adjusting the equipment.""
I stared at the photograph.
Evelyn was smiling.
Her hand was resting on the IV stand.
Michael was standing beside her, holding a plastic bag.
Daniel looked sick.
"Why didn't you report them?""
Patricia lowered her eyes.
"I did.""
"What happened?""
"The hospital administrator told me there was no evidence of wrongdoing. Then Frank Cole visited me at home.""
She opened the folder and removed a second photograph.
It showed Frank standing outside a small house.
"He told me my husband would lose his job if I continued asking questions.""
Detective Harris frowned.
"Your husband worked for Frank?""
Patricia nodded.
"He was a maintenance supervisor at one of his properties.""
Daniel clenched his fists.
"So they threatened your family.""
"Yes.""
"Why come forward now?""
Patricia looked at me.
"Because I saw your grandson's wedding announcement last week. I recognized the name Hayes. Then I saw the photograph of Vanessa Cole.""
She paused.
"I realized the same people were still trying to take what your husband had protected.""
I reached across the table.
"Did Thomas know?""
Patricia nodded.
"He called me the following morning. He asked whether I had seen anything unusual.""
My voice cracked.
"What did you tell him?""
"I told him about the medication.""
She began crying.
"He said he understood. Then he asked me to keep a copy of the hospital records.""
Detective Harris leaned forward.
"Do you still have them?""
Patricia opened the folder.
Inside were photocopies of medication administration logs, nursing notes, and a handwritten incident report.
Richard examined them.
"This is significant.""
He pointed to one entry.
"According to this, the prescribed medication was removed from the room at 11:09 p.m.""
Patricia nodded.
"And the replacement was entered under Evelyn's visitor authorization.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Could that medication have caused Grandpa's heart to stop?""
Patricia swallowed.
"I can't make a medical determination. But the substitution was unauthorized and potentially dangerous.""
Detective Harris closed the folder.
"We'll have the medical examiner review everything.""
I stared at the photograph of Evelyn.
For years, I had defended her.
When Thomas questioned her loyalty, I told him she was my sister.
When Michael accused her of being controlling, I told him she had always been protective.
When she stood beside me at the funeral, I held her hand.
I had trusted her with everything.
And she had used that trust to destroy my family.
Daniel suddenly stood.
"I want to speak to her.""
Detective Harris shook his head.
"Not yet.""
"She's my great-aunt!""
"And she's now a person of interest in a serious investigation.""
Richard received a call.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
"What?""
Daniel turned.
"What happened?""
Richard covered the phone.
"Police have located Evelyn.""
"Where?""
"At the Cole property.""
Detective Harris immediately contacted his officers.
But before he could finish, Richard's phone rang again.
This time, he put it on speaker.
A male voice came through.
"Richard, it's Michael.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"What do you want?""
Michael ignored him.
"I need to speak to Margaret.""
I took the phone.
"What?""
"Mother, you need to listen carefully.""
I said nothing.
"Evelyn is in danger.""
I almost laughed.
"From whom?""
"Frank.""
"Your partner?""
"He's lost control. He knows the documents are recovered. He thinks Evelyn is going to confess.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"Where is she?""
Michael answered.
"At the old warehouse on Willow Creek Road.""
Detective Harris wrote down the location.
"Why is she there?"" I asked.
Michael hesitated.
"Because she's hiding something.""
"What?""
"The original medical records. And something your husband left behind.""
My heart began pounding.
"What did Thomas leave?""
Michael's voice dropped.
"The money.""
I frowned.
"What money?""
"The four million dollars.""
Daniel grabbed the phone.
"That money belongs to me!""
Michael spoke quickly.
"No. You don't understand. Your grandfather never transferred it into your account.""
"Then where is it?""
"There's a separate account. One that only your grandmother can access.""
I stared at the phone.
Michael continued.
"Father set it up before he died. He intended to use it to expose everyone involved.""
Richard looked at me.
"Do you know anything about this account?""
I shook my head.
Michael sighed.
"Mother, check the inside pocket of Thomas's old blue coat.""
I froze.
The blue coat.
Thomas had worn it on our last anniversary.
I had kept it in the wardrobe for eleven years because I couldn't bring myself to give it away.
"Why?""
"Because he left something there.""
I looked at Daniel.
Michael's voice became urgent.
"Find the key. Then go to the bank. The money is yours to release.""
Detective Harris moved closer.
"Michael, where are you?""
"Somewhere safe.""
"Are you willing to come in and give a formal statement?""
Silence.
Then Michael answered.
"Yes.""
Daniel looked stunned.
"Why now?""
His father took a breath.
"Because Frank is going to kill Evelyn if she tells the truth.""
The call ended.
Detective Harris immediately dispatched officers to Willow Creek Road.
Richard looked at me.
"Margaret, if Thomas really left that account, we need to find it.""
I nodded.
But something bothered me.
Michael had known exactly where the key was.
He had known about the money.
He had known what Thomas intended to do.
And he had kept all of it secret for eleven years.
I turned toward Detective Harris.
"Before we go anywhere, I want one thing clarified.""
"What?""
"Why would Michael suddenly help us?""
The detective didn't answer.
Instead, his radio crackled.
An officer's voice came through.
"We've arrived at the warehouse.""
A second voice followed.
"There's a vehicle outside. The driver's door is open.""
Then came a pause.
"Detective, we have blood on the entrance steps.""
Daniel grabbed my arm.
The radio crackled again.
"We've found a woman inside.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Is it Evelyn?"" I whispered.
The officer answered.
"Yes.""
A moment passed.
Then:
"She's alive, but she's been badly injured.""
Detective Harris asked who was responsible.
The officer hesitated.
"There's a man here with her.""
"Who?""
"We believe it's Michael Hayes.""
Daniel's face went white.
Then the officer added:
"He's holding a gun.""
I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.
My son had finally returned.
And now, eleven years after his father's death, he was standing over his aunt with a weapon in his hand.
I looked at Daniel.
"Please," I whispered.
"Not another funeral.""
But the next message from the police was even worse.
May you like
Michael had asked for me by name.
And he had said he would only surrender if I came alone.
