Chapter 6: The Day Vanessa Lost Control

Three days later, the investigation officially began.

And Vanessa panicked.

I knew because people like Vanessa always revealed themselves when they lost control.

She didn’t apologize.

She didn’t admit anything.

She attacked.

The first sign was the message.

A long paragraph sent to my phone.

Emily, you are destroying this family over a misunderstanding.

I stared at it.

Then another arrived.

You are letting outsiders turn you against your own father.

Then another.

Your mother would be disappointed in how selfish you’re becoming.

That one hurt.

Not because I believed it.

Because Vanessa knew exactly where to aim.

She knew my mother was my weakness.

So I did something I had never done before.

I blocked her.

No explanation.

No argument.

No chance for her to twist my words.

That afternoon, Michael called.

“Emily, there has been a development.””

My heart tightened.

“What happened?””

“The trustees completed the first stage of their review.””

“And?””

He paused.

“The evidence is stronger than expected.””

I sat down.

“How much?””

“Enough that legal action is being considered.””

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had wondered if anyone would ever believe me.

Now they did.

But victory didn’t feel the way I imagined.

It felt heavy.

Because the people being exposed were my family.

That evening, my father called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Hello?””

“Emily.””

His voice sounded exhausted.

“She knows.””

I froze.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

I stood.

“What does she know?””

“That the trustees found evidence.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What is she going to do?””

My father was silent.

Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.

“She’s planning to tell them something first.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“Dad.””

His voice dropped.

“She said if she goes down, she isn’t going alone.””

A chill moved through me.

Because Vanessa had always played defense.

Now she was preparing to attack.

And I knew her.

She wouldn’t fight fair.

She would search for the one thing she could use against me.

My reputation.

My future.

My dreams.

The next morning, I woke up to hundreds of notifications.

Messages.

Emails.

Social media alerts.

My hands shook as I opened the first one.

It was a post.

A picture of me.

A headline underneath.

*LOCAL STUDENT ACCUSED OF MANIPULATING FAMILY AFTER RECEIVING SECRET SCHOLARSHIP MONEY*

My blood went cold.

Someone had leaked the story.

And they weren’t telling the truth.

They were telling Vanessa’s version.

I kept scrolling.

And then I saw the name attached to the statement.

Vanessa Carter.

She had gone public.

She wasn’t trying to save herself anymore.

She was trying to destroy me first.

And that was when I realized something.

The graduation dress was never the real battle.

It was just the first cut.

May you like

The real fight was over my future.

And Vanessa had just declared war.
