Chapter 2: The Secret My Mother Hid From Everyone

Nobody moved.

Not even Vanessa.

For the first time since she walked into my room with those scissors, she looked uncertain.

Afraid.

My father was the first person to react.

He stepped into the hallway.

“Stanford?””

His voice cracked slightly.

The man downstairs answered.

“Yes, Mr. Carter.””

I wiped my face quickly.

I didn’t want anyone seeing how badly I was shaking.

Especially not Vanessa.

She had already taken enough from me.

My father looked back at me.

And for the first time that day, there was something in his eyes.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

“What did your mother do?”” he whispered.

The question confused me.

“What?””

Before he could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.

“She probably exaggerated something.””

I looked at her.

Even now.

Even after destroying something my mother gave me.

She was still trying to control the story.

“Go downstairs,” my father said.

The words weren’t directed at me.

They were directed at Vanessa.

Her eyebrows lifted.

“What?””

“Go downstairs.””

For once, she listened.

But before leaving, she looked at me.

Not with anger.

With calculation.

Like she was trying to figure out what weapon I had just accidentally discovered.

I followed them downstairs slowly.

My dress was ruined.

My hair was messy.

My face was covered in tears.

But I didn’t care anymore.

A man in a dark suit stood near the front door.

He looked professional.

Calm.

Unlike everyone else in the room.

“Emily Carter?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He extended his hand.

“I’m Michael Reynolds. I work with Stanford’s scholarship administration office.””

I shook his hand.

“Why are you here?””

His expression softened.

“Because your mother requested that someone personally deliver this information if you were accepted.””

My breath caught.

“My mother?””

He nodded.

“Your mother established a private education fund before she passed away.””

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

That told me everything.

“You knew?””

My father remained silent.

“Dad.””

His jaw tightened.

“I knew she had made arrangements.””

“Arrangements?””

My voice rose.

“You knew my mother left something for me and never told me?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She probably wanted to keep you dependent.””

I turned toward her.

“No.””

Michael interrupted gently.

“I should clarify.””

He opened a folder.

“Your mother specifically instructed that the fund information remain private until Emily received her university acceptance.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Michael smiled sadly.

“Because she wanted you to know that your success came from your own effort.””

My eyes burned.

That sounded exactly like my mother.

She never wanted me to believe I needed saving.

She wanted me to believe I was capable.

Michael continued.

“She wrote a letter that was to be delivered with these documents.””

My hands started shaking.

“A letter?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

He handed me an envelope.

My mother’s handwriting was on the front.

Emily.

Just my name.

I couldn’t breathe.

I hadn’t seen her handwriting in years.

My fingers trembled as I touched the paper.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Is this really necessary right now?””

Michael looked at her.

“Yes.””

His tone changed.

Firm.

“Very necessary.””

She stopped.

Because everyone in the room realized something.

This man wasn’t afraid of her.

I opened the letter.

The first line destroyed me.

My sweet Emily,

If you are reading this, it means you made it farther than anyone ever thought you could.

My vision blurred.

I pressed my lips together.

My mother continued.

I know there will be days when people make you question whether you are enough. There will be people who feel threatened by your light. Do not shrink yourself to make them comfortable.

A tear fell onto the page.

I kept reading.

I created this fund because I wanted your future protected. Not controlled. Protected.

I looked up.

Protected.

That word stayed in my mind.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

My mother knew.

She knew there would be people who tried to limit me.

People who would see my dreams as a threat.

Michael cleared his throat.

“There is another part.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The fund contains a condition.””

My father finally spoke.

“What condition?””

Michael looked directly at me.

“Your mother required that if anyone attempted to interfere with your education, housing, or enrollment, the trustees had authority to investigate.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

Investigate.

I looked at the torn dress.

Then at Vanessa.

Michael noticed.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“Emily?””

I swallowed.

“What happens if someone tries to interfere?””

His answer was quiet.

“They can lose access to certain family assets your mother placed into legal protection.””

My father went pale.

Vanessa’s expression changed completely.

Because this wasn’t about a dress anymore.

This was about something much bigger.

My mother had known.

She had planned for a future she might never see.

And somehow…

She had protected me even after she was gone.

Michael closed the folder.

“Emily, I’m afraid there’s another matter.””

“What?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Your mother’s attorneys received a report this morning.””

My stomach dropped.

“What report?””

He glanced at my father.

Then Vanessa.

“An allegation that someone in this household attempted to prevent you from attending your graduation ceremony.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was deafening.

My father looked at Vanessa.

And for the first time all day…

He looked angry.

Not at me.

At her.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Michael didn’t react.

“Perhaps.””

Then he looked at me.

“But I think we should discuss everything somewhere private.””

I looked around the room.

At my father.

At Vanessa.

At the people who were supposed to be my family.

Then I held my mother’s letter tighter.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Vanessa hadn’t destroyed my graduation dress because she wanted attention for Ava.

That was only the excuse.

The real reason was much darker.

She was afraid.

Because my mother had left behind something Vanessa couldn’t cut apart.

Proof.

And for the first time in years…

May you like

I wasn’t the person trapped in this house.

They were.
