Chapter 6: The King’s Hidden Kingdom

The address on Trey Carter’s phone belonged to a place that no longer existed.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

The old warehouse sat on the edge of Atlanta’s industrial district, hidden between abandoned buildings and empty streets. The kind of place people drove past without noticing.

Years ago, Malik Carter had used it for storage.

Then, after a police investigation forced him to move operations, the building was supposedly abandoned.

Forgotten.

Dead.

Just like Malik.

But now Trey stood across the street staring at the dark building, wondering how many other things about his father were not what they seemed.

Rain covered the windshield of the SUV.

Nobody spoke.

Inside the vehicle were Trey, Andre, and Darius.

Three men who had spent the last forty-eight hours questioning each other.

Now they were driving toward the one person who could answer everything.

Malik Carter.

Andre looked at the warehouse through the window.

“I still don’t believe this.””

Trey said nothing.

Andre turned toward him.

“You really think that’s your father?””

Trey looked down at his phone.

The message was still there.

Come find me.

Before they find you.

“I don’t know what I believe anymore.””

Darius sat in the passenger seat, quiet.

Andre noticed.

“You have nothing to say?””

Darius looked back at him.

“What do you want me to say?””

“That this is impossible.””

“It is.””

“Then why are we here?””

Darius looked toward the building.

“Because impossible things keep happening.””

Nobody argued.

Because that was the truth.

A dead man had sent messages.

A funeral had turned into an investigation.

A trusted accountant had disappeared.

And now they were about to enter a building connected to a man who was supposedly buried.

Andre reached for the door handle.

“I’m going in.””

Darius stopped him.

“No.””

Andre looked annoyed.

“What now?””

“We don’t know who’s inside.””

Andre laughed.

“You think your warnings scare me?””

“No.””

Darius opened his door.

“I think your anger makes you predictable.””

Andre stared at him.

For once, he had no response.

Trey stepped out.

The rain immediately soaked his jacket.

The three men walked toward the warehouse.

Together.

But not as friends.

Not yet.

The door was unlocked.

That was the first sign something was wrong.

Darius noticed immediately.

“Someone wanted us here.””

Andre looked around.

“Or someone wanted us dead.””

Trey pushed the door open.

The warehouse was dark.

Empty.

Dust covered the floor.

Old equipment sat against the walls.

It looked abandoned.

But Trey felt something different.

A presence.

Like someone had been waiting.

“Dad?””

His voice echoed.

Nothing answered.

They moved deeper inside.

Then Trey saw it.

A light.

A small lamp glowing in the corner.

Beside it was a table.

And on the table was a folder.

With Malik Carter’s handwriting on it.

Trey froze.

His father’s handwriting.

The same writing from birthday cards.

Old notes.

Messages left on the kitchen counter.

His hands shook as he picked up the folder.

Darius watched him carefully.

“Open it.””

Trey did.

Inside were photographs.

Not random photographs.

Surveillance photographs.

Pictures of people.

Black Crown members.

Meetings.

Financial records.

And one picture that made everyone stop.

Victor Kane.

Standing beside someone else.

Andre stepped closer.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

Because they all recognized him.

The man standing beside Victor was someone they had known for years.

Someone nobody suspected.

Someone who had been at Malik’s funeral.

Darius picked up the photograph.

His expression changed.

“No.””

Trey looked at him.

“You know him?””

Darius stared at the picture.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Darius slowly answered.

“Leonard Harris.””

Ghost.

The oldest member of Black Crown.

The man everyone trusted.

The man who had spent decades protecting Malik’s legacy.

Andre shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Darius looked at him.

“Is it?””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone remembered.

Ghost was the one who told them to investigate.

Ghost was the one who demanded the truth.

Ghost was the one who stood between them when they almost destroyed each other.

And now his face was in a photograph with Victor.

A man stealing from Malik.

Trey flipped through more pages.

Then he found something else.

A handwritten note.

His father’s handwriting.

“If you are reading this, then the first betrayal has already been revealed.””

Trey read aloud.

Everyone listened.

“Do not trust the person who looks guilty.””

A pause.

“Trust the person who benefits from your confusion.””

Andre frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Darius took the note.

“He’s saying someone wants us focused on the wrong people.””

Trey looked at the photograph of Ghost.

“Then why leave this?””

“Because Ghost might be part of it.””

Nobody liked that answer.

But it was possible.

Malik’s entire plan depended on exposing betrayal.

The problem was nobody knew how deep the betrayal went.

Suddenly…

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Darius immediately moved.

“Someone’s here.””

Andre followed.

They climbed the stairs.

The second floor was darker.

Old offices lined the hallway.

At the end was a door.

A light came from underneath.

Darius raised his hand.

The three men prepared.

Then the door opened.

A man stepped out.

Trey stopped breathing.

Because standing in front of him…

Was Malik Carter.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to do.

Andre’s face changed completely.

“Malik?””

The man looked at his younger brother.

And said nothing.

Andre stepped forward.

Then stopped.

His eyes filled with anger.

“You let me bury you.””

Malik looked at him.

“I had to.””

“You had to?””

Andre’s voice broke.

“I stood there while they put dirt on your coffin.””

Malik lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“You watched?””

Malik did not answer.

That was enough.

Andre walked closer.

“You watched me fight Darius.””

“I needed to see who would react.””

“You needed to see?””

Andre’s anger exploded.

“You think this was some game?””

Malik looked at him.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“It was a war.””

The words silenced everyone.

Trey stared at his father.

“How?””

Malik looked at him.

The emotion on his face changed.

For the first time, he looked like a father.

Not a king.

“Trey.””

That was all he said.

But hearing his name from his father almost broke him.

Trey stepped forward.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I had no choice.””

Trey laughed sadly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Malik looked at him.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Trey’s anger appeared.

“By making me a target?””

“No.””

Malik shook his head.

“By making you invisible.””

The room became quiet.

Malik looked around.

“Do you know what happens when a king has a weakness?””

Nobody answered.

“People attack it.””

His eyes returned to Trey.

“You were my weakness.””

Trey looked away.

He wanted to be angry.

But hearing those words from his father made it harder.

Malik turned toward Darius.

The two men looked at each other.

A long silence passed.

Then Malik said:

“You didn’t betray me.””

Darius’s expression remained controlled.

“But you made everyone think I did.””

“Yes.””

Darius nodded slowly.

“I see.””

Andre looked between them.

“You knew?””

Malik looked at him.

“I knew someone would try to take control after my death.””

Andre clenched his jaw.

“And you thought this was the best plan?””

Malik didn’t respond.

Because even he knew the answer was complicated.

Then Trey noticed something.

His father looked exhausted.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Human.

“Dad…”

Malik looked at him.

“Why are you really hiding?””

The question changed the room.

Malik became serious.

“Because the person trying to destroy Black Crown is not outside.””

Everyone waited.

“They’re inside.””

Darius looked at the photograph.

“Ghost?””

Malik’s face changed slightly.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

Malik walked toward the table.

“Ghost is not the traitor.””

Trey looked confused.

“Then why was he with Victor?””

“Because Ghost was investigating him.””

Darius understood immediately.

“A setup.””

Malik nodded.

“Yes.””

Andre looked frustrated.

“So we’ve been chasing ghosts.””

Malik looked at him.

“No.””

He placed a file on the table.

“You’ve been chasing the wrong ghost.””

The words made everyone uneasy.

Malik opened the file.

Inside was a list.

Names.

Payments.

Meetings.

But one name appeared more often than any other.

Trey saw it.

And his blood went cold.

Because it was not Darius.

Not Ghost.

Not Victor.

It was someone closer.

Someone they never questioned.

Malik looked at his son.

“I wanted you to find this yourself.””

Trey stared at the name.

“Why?””

Malik’s voice became quiet.

“Because if I told you…”

He paused.

“You would never believe me.””

Trey looked up.

“Who is it?””

Malik took a breath.

Then said:

“The person who has been controlling Black Crown from the beginning.””

Nobody moved.

The rain outside became louder.

Malik looked at all three men.

And finally revealed:

“The traitor is someone in my family.””

The warehouse went silent.

Andre’s face changed.

Darius reached for the file.

Trey could barely breathe.

Because he already knew.

Before Malik said the name.

Before the truth came out.

A part of him already knew.

May you like

Then Malik spoke.

“Your mother.””
