Chapter 2: The Envelope Malik Left Behind

The envelope felt heavier than it should have.

Trey Carter stood in the middle of his father’s funeral holding a small white envelope that had already changed the way everyone looked at each other.

Minutes earlier, Black Crown had been a family standing together to bury their leader.

Now they were strangers searching for enemies.

The members surrounding the grave no longer looked like brothers.

They looked like suspects.

Every person wondered the same thing.

Was my name inside?

The wind moved through the cemetery, shaking the branches above them. The funeral flowers scattered across the grass from the earlier fight remained untouched.

Nobody cared about the flowers anymore.

Nobody cared about the broken chairs.

All attention was on Trey.

Andre Carter stared at the envelope with a mixture of anger and confusion.

“You’re telling me Malik had this before he died?””

Trey nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Andre stepped closer.

“And you waited until now?””

The question carried more than curiosity.

It carried betrayal.

Trey looked at his uncle.

“I didn’t know if I could trust anyone.””

Those words hit harder than Andre expected.

Because Trey was Malik Carter’s son.

If Malik’s own son believed there were people inside Black Crown who could not be trusted, then the situation was worse than anyone imagined.

Andre looked around at the members.

“So my brother knew somebody was stealing from him?””

Trey remained quiet.

Andre’s voice rose.

“And nobody told me?””

Monique finally spoke.

“Ace.””

Andre turned toward her.

“No, Monique. Don’t do that.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You knew too.””

The entire group became still.

Monique looked at him calmly.

But behind her calm expression was exhaustion.

“I knew Malik was worried.””

“Worried?””

Andre laughed bitterly.

“My brother built this organization. He never worried.””

Monique looked toward the coffin.

“That’s because Malik was good at hiding fear.””

Nobody responded.

Because everyone there knew she was right.

Malik Carter had spent years convincing people he was untouchable.

But even kings had enemies.

Sometimes the most dangerous enemies were the ones sitting closest to them.

Darius stood a few feet away, silent.

Everyone noticed.

The accusation against him had not disappeared.

The recording was still playing in everyone’s mind.

If something happens to me, don’t trust Darius.

The words had created a wound that could not be closed.

One of the older members of Black Crown, Leonard “Ghost” Harris, stepped forward.

At sixty years old, Ghost was one of the few people who had known Malik before Black Crown became powerful.

He raised his hand.

“Enough.””

The members quieted.

Ghost looked at Trey.

“If Malik left something behind, we need to see it.””

Andre immediately nodded.

“Exactly.””

Then he looked at Darius.

“And everyone needs to see who’s name is inside.””

Darius finally spoke.

“You think that envelope proves anything?””

Andre looked at him.

“It proves my brother was afraid.””

Darius shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Darius walked closer.

“It proves Malik knew someone was betraying him.””

He looked directly at Trey.

“But it doesn’t prove who.””

Andre stepped forward.

“You defending yourself already?””

Darius’s jaw tightened.

“No. I’m telling you to think.””

Andre smiled coldly.

“Funny coming from the man my brother warned me about.””

A few members shifted nervously.

Darius ignored the insult.

He looked at Trey.

“Your father trusted you with that envelope.””

Trey nodded.

“He did.””

“Then why did he not give it to your uncle?””

The question created silence.

Trey looked at Andre.

Then away.

Nobody missed the hesitation.

Andre noticed immediately.

“What?””

Trey said nothing.

Andre stepped closer.

“Why didn’t he give it to me?””

The young man looked uncomfortable.

Because the answer would hurt.

Finally, Trey said:

“Because Dad thought you would react emotionally.””

Andre froze.

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then anger crossed his face.

“He thought I was too emotional?””

Trey looked at him.

“He thought you would start a war before knowing the truth.””

Andre stared at his nephew.

The words were painful because they sounded exactly like something Malik would say.

The same criticism.

The same disappointment.

The same love hidden underneath.

Andre looked away.

The anger in his face weakened for only a moment.

Then it returned.

“So what?””

He pointed at the envelope.

“Open it.””

Trey looked down.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“I can’t.””

Everyone reacted.

“What?””

Trey looked at them.

“My father gave me one instruction.””

“What instruction?”” Ghost asked.

Trey swallowed.

“He said, ‘Don’t open this unless everyone who wants power is standing in the same room.’”

The words changed everything.

Slowly, everyone looked around.

Darius.

Andre.

Monique.

The leaders.

The soldiers.

Everyone who had influence in Black Crown was there.

Everyone except one person.

A member named Victor Kane.

Andre noticed first.

“Where’s Victor?””

Nobody answered.

Darius looked around.

Victor had been one of Malik’s financial advisers.

Not officially a member of Black Crown.

But close enough that Malik trusted him with money.

Ghost frowned.

“He left before the ceremony ended.””

Andre’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Nobody knew.

And that was the problem.

A person disappearing at the exact moment secrets were about to be revealed was never a coincidence.

Trey looked at the envelope.

Then at the cemetery entrance.

“He knew.””

Darius looked at him.

“Who?””

Trey’s voice lowered.

“Whoever my father was afraid of.””

The group became restless.

Some members whispered.

Others checked their phones.

The funeral was supposed to end with everyone going home.

Instead, it had become an emergency meeting.

Ghost pointed toward a black SUV parked near the cemetery.

“We’re not doing this here.””

Nobody argued.

Within minutes, the remaining members moved toward the vehicles.

The coffin remained behind.

Malik Carter was still waiting to be buried.

But nobody was thinking about the dead man anymore.

They were thinking about the living.

And what they might do to survive.

The Black Crown headquarters sat inside an old warehouse near downtown Atlanta.

From the outside, it looked abandoned.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal.

No signs.

No attention.

But inside, it was different.

The walls carried the history of Black Crown.

Photographs.

Old newspaper articles.

Awards.

Memories.

The place was built on Malik’s vision.

Now it felt like a house without a father.

The members gathered in the main room.

Nobody sat.

Nobody trusted anyone enough to relax.

Trey placed the envelope on the table.

Everyone stared.

Andre stood on one side.

Darius stood on the other.

A line had already formed.

Not between friends.

Between possible enemies.

Monique remained quiet near the back of the room.

She watched everything.

Because she understood something nobody else understood.

Malik never made random moves.

If he created this moment, he wanted something to happen.

Trey slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Not a list.

Not names.

Just one sentence.

Everyone leaned forward.

Trey read it aloud.

“Trust the person who has the most to lose.””

Silence.

Andre frowned.

“That’s it?””

Trey turned the paper over.

Nothing.

No names.

No explanation.

Darius looked confused.

“This isn’t enough.””

Ghost picked up the paper.

“Maybe Malik wanted us to figure it out.””

Andre shook his head.

“My brother wasn’t playing games.””

Monique suddenly spoke.

“Yes, he was.””

Everyone looked at her.

She walked forward.

“Malik always tested people.””

Andre stared.

“He was testing us?””

“No.””

Monique looked at Darius.

“Testing one person.””

The room became colder.

Darius noticed.

“You think Malik left this for me?””

Monique did not answer.

That silence was enough.

Andre immediately reacted.

“You knew.””

Monique looked at him.

“I knew Malik suspected someone.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation scared everyone more than any answer.

Finally, she said:

“He never told me.””

Darius laughed quietly.

“So we’re back where we started.””

“No,” Trey said.

Everyone turned.

The young man was staring at the paper.

“Dad told me something else.””

Andre looked at him.

“What?””

Trey took a breath.

“He said if the envelope was opened…”

He paused.

“Someone would try to leave.””

Darius looked toward the door.

At that exact moment…

The warehouse alarm sounded.

Everyone froze.

A member near the entrance looked outside.

“Someone’s leaving.””

Andre immediately reached for his weapon.

Several others followed.

Darius stopped them.

“Wait.””

Nobody listened.

They rushed outside.

A black car was speeding away from the warehouse.

Andre shouted.

“Stop that car!””

But it was already gone.

The license plate disappeared into the street.

Everyone stood there in silence.

Then Trey walked back inside.

His face had changed.

Because he knew what this meant.

Someone had heard about the envelope.

Someone had panicked.

Someone had something to hide.

Darius entered behind him.

“Who was it?””

Trey looked at the empty space where the car had been.

Then he said:

“Someone who knew my father better than any of us.””

Andre stared.

“Who?””

Trey slowly answered.

“His accountant.””

The room went silent.

Because Malik Carter’s accountant had controlled every dollar moving through Black Crown.

And if someone had been stealing money…

That person was the first one who should have been afraid.

Darius looked at the others.

“This isn’t about replacing Malik.””

Andre looked at him.

“Then what is it about?””

Darius stared at the paper on the table.

The sentence remained there.

Trust the person who has the most to lose.

Then Darius said quietly:

“It’s about finding out who killed him.””

Nobody spoke.

But deep down, everyone understood.

The funeral was only the beginning.

Malik Carter had not left behind a successor.

He had left behind a mystery.

May you like

And somewhere inside Black Crown…

The person responsible was still watching.
