Chapter 9: The Daughter Who Had Her Own Secret

We found Daniel's mother the next morning.

Her name was Laura.

She lived in the same house where Daniel grew up.

The house hadn't changed much.

The same flowers by the walkway.

The same blue door.

The same small garden where Michael used to teach Daniel how to plant vegetables.

For a moment, I almost forgot everything.

Then I remembered.

The photograph.

The recording.

The secret.

Daniel knocked.

The door opened after several seconds.

Laura smiled when she saw him.

Then she saw me.

Her smile disappeared.

"Mom?""

She looked between us.

"What happened?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

That worried her.

Because mothers know.

They know when something is wrong before anyone speaks.

"Can we come in?""

She stepped aside.

The house was warm.

Comfortable.

Normal.

And that made everything harder.

Because betrayal rarely looks evil.

Sometimes it looks like a familiar face.

A person who knows exactly how you take your coffee.

A person who remembers your birthday.

A person who says they love you.

We sat in the living room.

Laura looked at Daniel.

"You're scaring me.""

He placed the photograph on the table.

Her face changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

That was enough.

Daniel saw it.

"You know this picture.""

She didn't answer.

"Mom.""

Laura closed her eyes.

"I hoped this day would never come.""

Those words broke the last piece of trust.

Daniel leaned back.

"You knew.""

"I knew something.""

"What?""

She looked at me.

"I'm sorry.""

I felt a strange pain hearing those words.

Because I had spent years thinking Laura was just another victim of Michael's death.

Now I wasn't sure.

"Tell us everything," Daniel said.

Laura wiped her eyes.

"I met with Michael before he died.""

"Why?""

"Because he asked me to.""

Daniel frowned.

"He asked you?""

She nodded.

"He discovered something.""

"About the company?""

"No.""

The answer shocked us.

"Then what?""

Laura looked at her son.

"He discovered someone was watching him.""

The room became silent.

Daniel whispered:

"Watching him?""

She nodded.

"Your father thought someone was following him.""

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

Laura looked down.

"Because he asked me not to.""

I almost laughed.

Everyone had the same excuse.

Everyone had promised Michael something.

Everyone had protected a secret.

And somehow, all those secrets had led us here.

"What did Michael tell you?"" Daniel asked.

Laura hesitated.

Then she said:

"He told me he knew who was responsible.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Who?""

Laura looked terrified.

"He didn't tell me.""

"Why?""

"Because he said if I knew, I could become a target too.""

Daniel stood.

"So you knew my father was in danger?""

Laura cried.

"I knew he was afraid.""

"And you did nothing?""

"I tried!""

Her voice broke.

"I tried to convince him to go to the police.""

"Did he?""

"No.""

"Why?""

Laura looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

"Because he didn't trust the police.""

That sentence changed everything.

Because it meant Michael's fear went deeper than we thought.

He wasn't just afraid of one person.

He was afraid of a system.

A network.

Something bigger.

Daniel paced the room.

"Who else knew?""

Laura shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Then her eyes moved toward me.

"But your grandmother knows more than she says.""

The words hit me.

Daniel looked at me.

And this time, I couldn't avoid his eyes.

"Is that true?""

I took a breath.

"I told you what I knew.""

Laura interrupted.

"No.""

Her voice was quiet.

"But you know something else.""

I stared at her.

"Why would you say that?""

"Because Michael told me.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

Laura looked at me.

"He told me that if anything happened to him, you would protect Daniel. But he also said you would blame yourself for not seeing the warning signs.""

I felt tears forming.

Because Michael knew me.

He knew exactly what I would do.

He knew I would carry guilt.

He knew I would try to fix something impossible.

Daniel sat down slowly.

"Everyone knew something except me.""

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

He had been the center of the storm without knowing there was a storm.

Then Laura said something that changed everything.

"There is one more person you need to talk to.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Who?""

Laura's voice dropped.

"The person your father went to see the night before he died.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Who?""

Laura looked toward the window.

"The person who was supposed to save him.""

A pause.

Then she whispered:

"Olivia's father.""

And suddenly, the woman who threw me out of the wedding was no longer just the bride who made a terrible mistake.

She was connected to the secret that destroyed my family.

May you like

And we were about to discover whether she knew the truth...

or whether she had been hiding it all along.
