Chapter 5: The Stranger Who Knew My Son

The woman's name was Evelyn.

And the moment she said it, Daniel looked confused.

But I wasn't.

Because I had spent years wondering whether she would ever come back.

Whether she would ever have the courage to tell the truth.

"I don't understand," Daniel said.

Evelyn took a slow breath.

"I knew your father.""

"My father knew a lot of people.""

"No.""

She looked at him.

"I knew him differently.""

Olivia stared.

"What does that mean?""

Evelyn ignored her.

Her eyes stayed on Daniel.

"Your father trusted me.""

That sentence changed something.

Because Michael did not trust easily.

After everything that happened with his own family, he became careful.

He questioned people.

He watched what they said.

He noticed what they didn't say.

So if Michael trusted someone...

It mattered.

"Why are you here?"" Daniel asked.

Evelyn looked at me.

"Because I heard your grandmother was attacked at your wedding.""

Daniel's face darkened.

"And you came because of that?""

"No.""

She looked down.

"I came because I realized the secret couldn't stay buried anymore.""

Richard stepped forward.

"You shouldn't be here.""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Neither should you.""

The tension between them was immediate.

Daniel noticed.

"You two know each other.""

Nobody answered.

He looked exhausted.

Like every answer created three more questions.

"Someone needs to start explaining.""

So I did.

"Michael discovered something twelve years ago.""

Daniel looked at me.

"About the company?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"What?""

I looked at Evelyn.

She continued.

"Your father discovered that financial records had been changed.""

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard shook his head.

"That was never proven.""

"No.""

Evelyn's voice was firm.

"Because someone destroyed the evidence.""

The room went silent.

Daniel looked like he had been punched.

"Are you saying my grandfather stole money?""

"No.""

I answered carefully.

"I'm saying your grandfather protected someone.""

"Who?""

Nobody wanted to say it.

But Daniel already knew.

His eyes moved slowly toward Richard.

"Mr. Hayes?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"My relationship with your grandfather was complicated.""

"That's not an answer.""

Richard sighed.

"Your grandfather made mistakes.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

He picked up the letter.

"But nobody tells me what they were.""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Because your father wanted to protect you.""

Daniel froze.

"My father?""

"He knew if the truth came out, your family would be destroyed.""

Daniel looked down.

"And now?""

I answered.

"Now you're old enough to handle it.""

That was the hardest thing to say.

Because I had spent years protecting him.

Maybe too much.

Maybe love sometimes becomes a cage when we try too hard to prevent someone from being hurt.

"I should have told you sooner," I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

There was pain in his eyes.

Not anger.

Pain.

"I trusted you.""

"I know.""

"And you kept this from me.""

I lowered my head.

"I did.""

That honesty surprised him.

Because I didn't defend myself.

I didn't make excuses.

I simply admitted the truth.

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Losing you.""

The room became quiet.

Daniel looked away.

And for a moment, I saw the little boy again.

The boy who didn't understand why adults kept secrets.

The boy who believed family meant always telling the truth.

"I need to know everything," he said.

Evelyn nodded.

"Then you need to see something.""

She reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

Daniel stared.

"What is that?""

"Proof.""

Richard immediately stepped forward.

"No.""

That one word said everything.

Daniel noticed.

"What is in the folder?""

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel took it.

Inside were copies of documents.

Old documents.

Bank records.

Emails.

Contracts.

His hands moved faster as he read.

His expression changed.

Confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then anger.

"My grandfather...""

He looked up.

"He covered this up.""

Nobody spoke.

"He knew.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel looked at Olivia.

"And your family knew too.""

Olivia started crying.

"I didn't know the details.""

"But you knew enough.""

She wiped her face.

"I knew our families had problems.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

She didn't answer.

Because there was no answer that would make it okay.

Daniel slowly closed the folder.

Then he looked at me.

"Grandma.""

"Yes?""

"Why did my father die?""

That question broke something inside me.

Because I had avoided it for twelve years.

Not because I didn't know.

Because I did.

"I don't know everything.""

Daniel waited.

"But I know your father was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

I looked at the letter.

"He believed someone wanted him silent.""

The room went still.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Daniel whispered:

"You think my father's death wasn't an accident?""

I couldn't answer.

Because the truth was too heavy.

But Evelyn did.

"No.""

Everyone turned.

She looked at Daniel.

May you like

"Your father was investigating something dangerous.""

"And someone made sure he couldn't finish.""
