Chapter 4: The Night My Life Changed Forever
I couldn't move.
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
My apartment.
My home.
The one place I thought was safe.
How could anyone know where I lived?
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Thomas didn't look away from the window.
"No. It's not.""
I felt anger rising through the fear.
"Wait.""
I stepped closer.
"You show up here with a mysterious story, tell me your missing daughter wrote my name, and now you're saying someone knows my address?""
Thomas turned toward me.
"I understand how this sounds.""
"No, you don't.""
My voice became louder.
"You don't get to walk into my workplace and turn my life upside down.""
The store became silent.
Even Dave looked nervous.
Thomas accepted my anger.
He didn't argue.
"I know.""
I expected him to defend himself.
He didn't.
That somehow made it worse.
"Then explain.""
He reached into his coat.
"I need you to see something.""
I hesitated.
Then I looked at the screen he held out.
It was another security image.
This one wasn't from the store.
It was outside my apartment building.
My stomach dropped.
The picture showed a man standing near the entrance.
Wearing a dark jacket.
Watching the building.
"When was this taken?""
"Last night.""
My face went pale.
"After I left work?""
Thomas nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked closer.
The image was blurry.
But there was something familiar.
A posture.
A way of standing.
Like someone waiting.
"Who is he?""
"We don't know.""
"Then how do you know he was there because of me?""
Thomas looked at me.
"Because he followed me here.""
I swallowed.
"Why would he follow you?""
"Because he saw me come here.""
"To Franklin Market?""
"Yes.""
"And he saw me help you?""
Thomas nodded.
I felt a strange fear settle over me.
Something I had done in five minutes had become a target.
"Why would anyone care about that?""
Thomas looked away.
"Because my daughter believed that moment was important.""
I shook my head.
"Your daughter sounds like she was trying to find meaning in everything.""
"She was.""
He smiled sadly.
"Olivia always believed people revealed who they really were when nobody was rewarding them.""
I looked at the check.
The note.
My name.
"Why would she believe I could prove anything?""
Thomas became quiet.
Then he said:
"Because she saw something.""
"What?""
"She saw someone else.""
"Someone else?""
"Another person who helped me before you did.""
I waited.
"Someone who disappeared.""
I felt confused.
"How is that connected to me?""
Thomas sat down again.
"Years ago, before my company became successful, I had nothing.""
He looked at his hands.
"An employee at this market helped me survive.""
"The woman you told me about?""
"Yes.""
I nodded.
"But after I became wealthy, I tried to find her.""
"And you couldn't.""
"No.""
Thomas's eyes became distant.
"Until Olivia found something.""
"What?""
"A hidden record.""
"Of her?""
"Of everyone who helped me.""
I frowned.
"Everyone?""
Thomas nodded.
"My daughter believed those people were the reason I became who I was.""
He looked at me.
"She wanted to thank them.""
"And she found me?""
"Not exactly.""
He pulled out another paper.
"This was discovered in Olivia's apartment after she disappeared.""
I read the words.
There were names.
Dozens of names.
People.
Dates.
Locations.
And near the bottom was mine.
Emily Parker.
I stared.
"I never met her.""
Thomas shook his head.
"Not directly.""
"Then how?""
"Because Olivia was watching.""
The idea made me uncomfortable.
"Watching me?""
"Not you specifically.""
He paused.
"She was watching people.""
"Why?""
"To find people who acted with kindness when nobody was looking.""
I didn't know whether to feel honored or frightened.
"You're saying your daughter built some kind of list?""
"Yes.""
"And I'm on it?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Thomas looked at me.
"Because you reminded her of something she lost.""
"What?""
"Hope.""
Before I could respond, the lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked up.
The store went dark for two seconds.
Then the emergency lights turned on.
A customer near the coffee machine screamed.
"What happened?""
Dave looked toward the back.
"Power issue.""
But Thomas didn't move.
His eyes were locked on the entrance.
"What?""
I whispered.
He didn't answer.
Then I saw it.
The black SUV outside.
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
He wasn't hiding anymore.
He walked directly toward the store.
Thomas stood.
"Emily, listen carefully.""
My heart raced.
"What?""
"Go to the back office.""
"Why?""
"Because he isn't here for me.""
The automatic doors began sliding open.
The man stepped inside.
Rainwater dripped from his jacket.
His eyes moved across the store.
Then stopped on me.
Thomas whispered:
"He's here because he knows Olivia trusted you.""
I felt frozen.
The stranger slowly walked closer.
And then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Emily Parker?""
I couldn't answer.
The man reached into his pocket.
Not quickly.
Not aggressively.
Slowly.
Like he wanted me to see.
Then he pulled out a photograph.
A photograph of me.
And the missing billionaire's daughter.
Except I had never met Olivia Whitaker in my life.
May you like
At least...
I didn't remember meeting her.
