Chapter 10: The Truth About The Night Everything Changed

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

I could only stare.

The man standing in front of me looked older.

Different.

But not enough.

Not enough to erase recognition.

The same eyes.

The same voice.

The same scar near his eyebrow.

My father.

The man I had buried ten years ago.

Thomas looked at me.

"Emily?""

I didn't answer.

The world around me felt unreal.

My father looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"Emily.""

I stepped back.

"No.""

My voice barely worked.

"No.""

He took a step forward.

"I know this is impossible.""

I shook my head.

"You died.""

His face broke.

"I know.""

The anger came before the fear.

"You died.""

I pointed at him.

"I watched them bury you.""

My father lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry.""

Those two words destroyed something inside me.

Because they sounded real.

Daniel moved closer.

"Who are you?""

My father looked at him.

"My name is Robert Parker.""

Thomas went still.

"Robert Parker?""

I looked at him.

"You know him?""

Thomas's expression changed.

"I know the name.""

That terrified me.

"How?""

Thomas looked at my father.

"Because Robert Parker was one of my first employees.""

My breathing stopped.

"What?""

Thomas nodded.

"He helped build Whitaker Industries.""

I stared at my father.

"Then why did you disappear?""

Nobody answered.

My father looked at Thomas.

"Because I found out what Michael was doing.""

Everything went silent.

Michael.

The name connected everything.

My father continued.

"Ten years ago, I discovered someone inside the company was manipulating records.""

Thomas looked devastated.

"You knew?""

Robert nodded.

"I tried to expose him.""

"Michael.""

"Yes.""

I felt sick.

My entire life had been built around a lie.

My father didn't die.

He disappeared.

Because of the same person who attacked Olivia.

"Why didn't you come back?""

My father's eyes filled with regret.

"Because they threatened you.""

Me.

Always me.

I hated that answer.

But I understood it.

"What happened that night?""

Robert looked at me.

"Your mother wasn't killed by an accident.""

I froze.

"What?""

Thomas closed his eyes.

Daniel whispered:

"Oh my God.""

Robert continued.

"Your mother discovered the truth.""

I felt tears forming.

"My mother?""

"She found evidence against Michael.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Emily...""

"No.""

I couldn't accept it.

My entire family.

My entire history.

Everything.

All wrong.

Robert stepped closer.

"Your mother gave Olivia the information.""

I looked confused.

"Olivia?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

"Because your mother knew she could trust her.""

I remembered the journal.

The night.

The promise.

"What was in the journal?""

Robert looked at me.

"The truth.""

Daniel suddenly looked toward the warehouse entrance.

"Wait.""

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

Clapping slowly.

A familiar voice echoed.

"Beautiful.""

My blood froze.

Michael Whitaker stepped into the light.

The man who had been Thomas's brother.

The man Olivia feared.

The man who had destroyed everything.

He smiled.

"I was wondering how long it would take you to put it together.""

Thomas looked at him with heartbreak.

"Michael.""

Michael laughed softly.

"Don't look so betrayed, brother.""

"You destroyed my family.""

"No.""

Michael shook his head.

"I saved your company.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You attacked Olivia.""

Michael smiled.

"Olivia was too intelligent.""

He looked at Thomas.

"Just like her mother.""

Thomas clenched his fists.

"You killed her?""

Michael's smile disappeared.

"No.""

Everyone froze.

Michael continued:

"I didn't kill Olivia.""

He looked at me.

"I protected her.""

I felt confused.

"What?""

Michael smiled again.

"Because the truth is...""

He pointed at my father.

"Robert Parker wasn't protecting Olivia.""

He looked at me.

"He was protecting himself.""

My father stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him.""

Michael laughed.

"After all these years, you're still lying.""

I looked between them.

Two men.

Two stories.

Two versions of my life.

Then Michael pulled something from his coat.

A journal.

Olivia's journal.

My heart stopped.

"You wanted the truth?""

Michael held it up.

"Fine.""

He opened the first page.

"And the truth is that Olivia discovered something even I didn't know.""

He looked directly at me.

"Emily Parker.""

My name.

Again.

Always my name.

Michael smiled.

"Your father didn't disappear because of me.""

A pause.

"He disappeared because he found out who you really are.""

The warehouse went silent.

Thomas looked confused.

Daniel looked shocked.

My father looked terrified.

And I realized the final secret wasn't about Olivia.

It wasn't about Thomas.

It wasn't even about Michael.

It was about me.

Michael turned the journal around.

The final page was visible.

One sentence written in Olivia's handwriting.

*Emily Parker is the missing piece everyone has been searching for.*

I stared at the words.

May you like

And for the first time in my life...

I wondered if I even knew my own name.
