Chapter 19: The Dead Man's Voice

Martha couldn't breathe.

She stood in the middle of David's old garage, holding the recorder as though it had become something dangerous.

Her husband had been dead for fifteen years.

She had buried him.

She had stood beside his grave.

She had watched the earth cover his coffin.

And yet his voice had just come through that recorder.

Michael backed away from her.

“Mom, I didn't know.””

Martha turned slowly.

“Your father was involved?””

“I don't know.””

“You heard him.””

“I heard the recording.””

“Don't play games with me, Michael.””

Michael's eyes filled.

“I swear I didn't know he was part of it.””

Clint took the recorder from Martha.

“Let's establish something first. That recording could have been made years before David's accident. It doesn't prove her husband was alive.””

Martha shook her head.

“No. It was his voice.””

“I believe you recognize it. But we need the date.””

Clint examined the device.

A small label was attached to its underside.

*OCTOBER 18 — 12:43 A.M.*

The night before David's crash.

Martha gripped the workbench.

“Why would my husband be speaking to Susan?””

Michael looked at the ledger.

“Maybe he owned the company before he died.””

Martha stared at him.

“What company?””

“Lane Family Holdings. The original company.””

Clint opened the ledger.

The first pages contained account numbers, transfers and names.

At the bottom of one page was a signature.

*ROBERT LANE.*

Martha felt sick.

Robert had been a respected businessman. He had built the family company from a small construction firm into a regional property business.

He had also been a devoted husband.

At least, that was what she had believed.

Clint turned another page.

“Look at this.””

A transfer had been made three days before David's accident.

Fifty thousand dollars to Michael.

Another payment of twenty thousand to Thomas Reed.

A third transfer, much larger, had gone to a private account.

The account holder was listed as:

*ROBERT LANE — ESTATE TRUST.*

Martha stared.

“My husband died before these payments.””

Clint checked the date.

“According to the bank, yes.””

Michael looked at her.

“Mom, what if he didn't?””

Martha shook her head.

“I saw his body.””

“Did you?””

She turned sharply.

“What kind of question is that?””

Michael lowered his voice.

“Do you remember the funeral home?””

Martha's expression changed.

She remembered the closed coffin.

The funeral director had said Robert's injuries made an open viewing impossible.

She remembered Susan insisting that Martha shouldn't see him.

She remembered the funeral being arranged quickly.

And she remembered the death certificate arriving several days later.

“I saw the coffin,” she whispered.

Clint looked at Michael.

“Where was Robert buried?””

“Greenwood Cemetery.””

“Then we need the official records.””

Before they could move, Martha's phone rang.

Susan.

She answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

“Martha, listen to me.””

“Did you help them kill David?””

Susan began crying.

“I never wanted David dead.””

“Did you know Robert was involved?””

Silence.

Martha closed her eyes.

“Answer me.””

“Yes.””

The word landed like a blow.

Susan continued.

“Robert didn't die the way you were told.””

Martha's knees weakened.

“Where is he?””

“I don't know.””

“You were talking to him on that recording!””

“That was twelve years ago. He was alive then.””

Martha gripped the phone.

“Why did you let me bury an empty coffin?””

Susan sobbed.

“Because he made me believe he would come back.””

“What?””

“He said he had to disappear to protect the family. He told me you knew.””

Martha's voice broke.

“I knew nothing.””

“I know that now.””

“Where did he go?””

Susan hesitated.

“Before he disappeared, Robert created a second identity. He used it to control the company and move money. He was the person who arranged the payments to Caldwell and Laura.””

Clint leaned closer.

“Ask her about the final recording.””

Martha repeated the question.

“Susan, what did Robert mean when he said he would handle me?””

Susan began crying harder.

“He planned to have you declared incompetent. He wanted control of your property and David's estate.””

Martha felt the world narrowing around her.

“Why?””

“Because David discovered that Robert had been using the family company to move stolen money. David wanted to expose him.””

“And you helped Robert?””

“I was afraid.””

“You gave Laura David's route. You hid Anna. You lied about my son.””

“I know.””

“You let me grieve while you protected the man who destroyed my family.””

Susan whispered:

“I thought I could fix it.””

Martha's voice became cold.

“You don't get to fix twelve years.””

She ended the call.

Clint looked at her.

“We're going to Greenwood Cemetery.””

They reached the cemetery shortly before dawn.

The groundskeeper opened the records office after Clint explained that they were investigating a possible falsified death certificate.

The burial entry was there.

Robert Lane.

Date of death: October 4.

But something was wrong.

The grave number matched a burial plot that had been reassigned five years later.

The groundskeeper frowned.

“That plot was never occupied.””

Martha stared at him.

“What do you mean?””

He opened another ledger.

“The original burial authorization was canceled. The remains were never interred here.””

Clint leaned over the desk.

“Who canceled it?””

The groundskeeper pointed to the signature.

Susan Lane.

Martha stepped back.

“Where was my husband buried?””

The groundskeeper searched the records.

Then he found another entry.

“Private cremation. No family attendance.””

Martha felt her stomach twist.

“Who authorized it?””

The groundskeeper turned the page.

A name appeared.

*ROBERT LANE.*

Clint frowned.

“He authorized his own cremation?””

The groundskeeper shook his head.

“Someone signed on his behalf.””

He pointed to the signature.

It was not Susan's.

It was not Martha's.

It was a name Martha had never seen before.

*DANIEL CROSS.*

Michael stared at it.

“That's the name Robert used when he opened the second company.””

Clint looked at him.

“Where can we find Daniel Cross?””

Michael swallowed.

“I know the address.””

They drove to a private estate outside the city.

The house was modern, surrounded by tall trees and a high stone wall.

A security camera followed their car.

Clint stopped at the gate.

A man appeared on the other side.

He was older, with silver hair and a walking cane.

Martha knew his face immediately.

Robert.

Her husband.

The man she had mourned for fifteen years.

He looked at her through the gate.

Then he smiled.

“Martha.””

She stepped out of the car.

“Open the gate.””

Robert's smile faded.

“Not here.””

“Open it!””

He looked toward Michael.

“You shouldn't have brought her.””

Michael's face hardened.

“She deserved the truth.””

Robert stared at him.

Then he turned back to Martha.

“You've been listening to things you don't understand.””

Martha walked toward the gate.

“I buried you.””

Robert's expression remained calm.

“No. You buried a story.””

She began crying.

“David died believing I didn't want him.””

Robert looked away.

“David made his own choices.””

“You arranged his death.””

“I arranged a business problem.””

Clint stepped out of the car.

“That's a confession.””

Robert looked at him.

“You think you can frighten me with a recording?””

Clint raised his phone.

“The police have everything.””

For the first time, Robert looked uncertain.

Then he glanced behind him.

A second man stepped out of the house.

He was carrying a black briefcase.

Robert spoke quietly.

“Bring it.””

The man hesitated.

“Sir, the police are already—”

“Bring it!””

The man obeyed.

Robert opened the briefcase and removed a document.

He held it against the gate.

“Before you destroy what's left of this family, Martha, you should know something.””

She stared at him.

“What?””

Robert smiled faintly.

“David wasn't the only person I had declared dead.””

He turned the document around.

It was a birth certificate.

The name of the child was unfamiliar.

But the mother's name was not.

*SUSAN LANE.*

And the father's name was:

*ROBERT LANE.*

Martha stared at the paper.

Then she looked at her sister's name.

Susan hadn't only helped Robert destroy David.

She had been hiding a child of her own.

May you like

Robert leaned toward the gate.

“And that child is the rightful heir to everything David left behind.””
