Chapter 17: The Brother's Secret

Martha released Anna's hand.

The name still echoed in her mind.

Michael.

Her son.

The boy she had raised.

The man who had stood beside her while they uncovered David's final days.

“He visited you?”” Martha asked.

Anna nodded.

“Every month.””

“Why?””

“To make sure I didn't tell you what happened.””

Clint moved closer to the bed.

“Did Michael threaten you?””

Anna hesitated.

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

Anna looked down at her hands.

“He brought money. Food. Books.

Sometimes photographs of Emily. He said he was helping me.””

Martha's eyes filled.

“But he never told me you were alive.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Anna looked toward the window.

“Because he knew what I remembered.””

Clint pulled a chair beside the bed.

“Tell us.””

Anna took a slow breath.

“Twelve years ago, David called me the night before the accident. He said he had discovered that Laura and Caldwell were moving money through accounts connected to the hospital.””

Martha listened without blinking.

“He wanted me to take the original documents to someone outside the family. He didn't trust anyone close to him anymore.””

“Why you?”” Clint asked.

“Because he believed I was the only person Laura couldn't easily intimidate.””

Anna smiled sadly.

“He was wrong.””

She explained that David had given her a copy of the documents and told her to keep them hidden. The next morning, she received a call from Michael.

“He said David had been in an accident. He told me to come to St. Catherine's immediately.””

Martha shook her head.

“Michael knew about the accident?””

Anna nodded.

“He said he had information that could help David.””

Clint leaned forward.

“What information?””

“He said David had called him before the crash. David told him someone was following him.””

Martha closed her eyes.

“Michael never told me that.””

Anna continued.

“When I arrived, Caldwell met me near the entrance. He said David was stable but needed rest. Then he asked for the documents.””

“Did you give them to him?””

“No.””

Anna's voice became firmer.

“I knew something was wrong. I asked to see David. Caldwell refused.””

“What happened next?”” Clint asked.

“Laura arrived. She accused me of trying to steal her husband. She said if I didn't leave, she would make sure Emily disappeared.””

Martha squeezed Anna's hand.

“And Susan?””

“She came later. She told me David had died.””

Martha shook her head.

“He was still alive.””

“I know that now.””

Anna began crying.

“Susan told me he had asked for me. She said he wanted me to take Emily and disappear before Laura found us.””

“Did you believe her?””

“I did.””

Anna looked at Martha.

“I left the hospital that night. But someone followed me. I was attacked in the parking garage.””

Clint's expression hardened.

“Who?””

“I never saw his face.””

“Was that when you were admitted to Room 309?””

Anna nodded.

“I woke up there two days later. Susan was sitting beside my bed.””

Martha stared at her.

“She helped you?””

“At first, I thought she had saved my life. Then she told me I couldn't leave.””

“Why?””

Anna swallowed.

“Because she said David's death was my fault.””

Martha shook her head.

“No.””

“She said if I contacted the police, Emily would be taken away. She told me Laura had powerful friends and that I would never see my daughter again.””

Clint looked at the photograph on the bedside table.

“Who transferred you to Briar Glen?””

Anna closed her eyes.

“Michael.””

Martha felt a sharp pain in her chest.

“Why would he do that?””

Anna reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“Because he was trying to protect me from the people who paid him.””

Martha took it.

It was a bank transfer record.

A payment had been made to Michael Lane twelve years earlier.

The amount was $50,000.

The sender was Lane Family Holdings.

Clint examined the date.

“Two days before the crash.””

Martha looked at Anna.

“Did Michael tell you why he took the money?””

“He said Laura offered it to him to sign some papers. He believed it was a business loan.””

“That doesn't explain this payment.””

Anna pointed to the bottom.

“Look at the reference.””

Clint read it aloud.

“Witness relocation and medical custody.””

Martha's stomach turned.

“Michael was paid to hide you?””

Anna nodded.

“He said he didn't know I was alive when he accepted the money. By the time he discovered the truth, he was already trapped.””

“Trapped by whom?””

“Caldwell.””

Anna reached for another envelope.

Inside was a letter written by David.

Martha recognized his handwriting immediately.

She unfolded it.

Michael,

If anything happens to me, you must tell Mom everything. Don't let Laura convince you that silence protects anyone.

I know you signed the papers. I know you didn't understand what they were for.

But you saw the transfers. You know who was paid.

The envelope is not the only evidence.

Look beneath the floor of the old garage.

And if Anna is still alive, get her to Mom.

Martha pressed the letter to her chest.

“He knew.””

Anna nodded.

“He suspected Michael had been manipulated. But he didn't know how deeply.””

Clint stood.

“What's beneath the old garage?””

Anna looked at him.

“The original ledger.””

“Which garage?””

“The garage behind David's first house.””

Martha knew the place.

It had been sold years ago.

But before she could speak, the door opened.

Michael stood in the doorway.

His face was pale.

He looked at Anna.

Then at the letter in Martha's hands.

“Mom,” he whispered.

Martha stood.

“Tell me it isn't true.””

Michael looked down.

“I can explain.””

“Did you take the money?””

He nodded.

“Did you help hide Anna?””

His eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Martha took a step back.

“Did you know David was alive when you helped them?””

Michael shook his head desperately.

“No. I swear I didn't.””

Anna spoke quietly.

“You knew afterward.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Martha's voice broke.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Michael looked at her.

“Because they threatened Rachel.””

Rachel's name changed everything.

Clint stepped toward him.

“Who threatened her?””

Michael reached into his coat and removed a small memory card.

“Laura didn't act alone. Caldwell didn't act alone either.””

He placed it in Martha's hand.

“This contains the recording from the night David died.””

Clint frowned.

“We already have recordings.””

“Not this one.””

Michael looked at Anna.

“This is the recording of what happened after the doctors stopped trying to save him.””

Anna began shaking.

Martha stared at Michael.

“What does it prove?””

Michael swallowed.

“That David was conscious when someone asked him to sign the final papers.””

“Who asked him?””

Michael's voice dropped.

“My mother.””

Martha froze.

“Your mother?””

Michael nodded.

“Not you.””

He looked toward Anna.

“Laura's mother. The woman who helped raise Laura after her father died.””

Clint frowned.

“Why would she be there?””

Michael looked at Martha.

“Because she was the person who owned Lane Family Holdings.””

May you like

Then he whispered:

“And she was the person who ordered Caldwell to make sure David never left that hospital.””
