Chapter 7: The Enemy Who Was Waiting in the Shadows
Richard Whitmore had always believed preparation was the difference between winners and losers.
That was how he lived.
While other people reacted, Richard planned.
While others trusted, Richard collected information.
While others forgot the past, Richard preserved it.
Every person who had ever crossed him had a file.
Every conversation that mattered had a record.
Every weakness had been documented.
He believed that was what made him powerful.
But now he sat alone in his office, staring at a screen that proved something he never wanted to admit.
Someone had prepared for him too.
Arthur Whitmore.
The man Richard underestimated for years was not simply an angry father.
He was someone who knew the same world Richard came from.
A world of secrets.
A world where information could change lives.
Richard leaned back in his chair and looked at the old photograph sitting on his desk.
It showed his father, Victor Whitmore, standing beside several men from decades ago.
One of those men was Arthur.
Richard had seen the picture many times.
But he had never understood its importance.
Not until now.
Arthur was not a stranger.
He was connected to the Whitmore legacy.
And that made him far more dangerous.
Richard’s phone rang.
He answered immediately.
“Yes?””
A calm voice responded.
“The original archive has been located.””
Richard sat up.
“Where?””
“Not where you expected.””
A pause.
“Arthur kept a copy.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
“Impossible.””
“He did.””
Richard stood and walked toward the window.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
“Find it.””
“We’re trying.””
“No.””
Richard’s voice became sharper.
“Don’t try.””
A pause.
“Do it.””
He ended the call.
For years, Richard had controlled people through fear and influence.
But now he was experiencing something unfamiliar.
Someone else was moving faster than him.
And he hated it.
Across town, Arthur sat with Lily in a quiet room, reviewing the information they had uncovered.
Neither of them had slept.
There was too much they did not understand.
The recordings.
Project Black.
Victor Whitmore’s message.
Arthur’s connection to the past.
Every answer seemed to create more questions.
Lily looked exhausted.
“Dad.””
Arthur looked up.
“What?””
“Are we in danger?””
Arthur stayed silent for a moment.
He wanted to say no.
He wanted to give her the comfort she needed.
But he had promised himself something.
No more lies.
“Yes.””
Lily swallowed.
“Because of Richard?””
“Because of what Richard knows.””
She looked confused.
“What’s the difference?””
Arthur leaned forward.
“Richard is dangerous because he believes he has everything to lose.””
Lily looked down.
“And what does he have to lose?””
Arthur looked at the documents.
“Everything.””
The answer was simple.
Richard had built his entire identity around being untouchable.
A perfect husband.
A successful businessman.
A respected member of society.
If Project Black exposed what the Whitmore family had hidden, Richard would lose more than money.
He would lose the story he had spent his life creating.
A story where he was always right.
Lily quietly said:
“I never saw this side of him.””
Arthur looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“He always wanted control.””
She paused.
“But I thought it was because he cared what people thought.””
Arthur shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at her seriously.
“People who need control rarely do it because they care.””
Lily remembered all the moments she ignored.
The questions she stopped asking.
The times Richard became angry when she made decisions without him.
The way he slowly isolated her.
The way he convinced her that nobody else would understand.
“I thought I was the only one.””
Arthur’s expression softened.
“That’s what people like him want.””
Lily looked at him.
“To make you believe you’re alone.””
Before Arthur could answer, the investigator entered the room.
“We found something.””
Arthur immediately stood.
“What?””
The man placed several documents on the table.
“These are older records connected to Project Black.””
Arthur looked through them.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
The investigator pointed.
“Financial transfers.””
Arthur studied the numbers.
“These are not from the Whitmore company.””
“No.””
“Then who?””
The investigator hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
Arthur looked up.
“The records point to another organization.””
Lily frowned.
“Another organization?””
The investigator nodded.
“Someone outside the Whitmore family was involved.””
Arthur continued reading.
The documents were old.
Very old.
And at the bottom of one page was a signature.
Arthur recognized it immediately.
His face changed.
Lily noticed.
“Dad?””
Arthur placed the paper down.
“That’s impossible.””
“What?””
Arthur looked at the signature.
“Because this person was supposed to be gone.””
The room became quiet.
“Who?””
Arthur did not answer immediately.
Because saying the name out loud meant accepting that the past was not buried.
Finally, he spoke.
“Daniel Cross.””
The investigator looked surprised.
“You know him?””
Arthur nodded.
“I knew him a long time ago.””
“Who was he?””
Arthur looked at Lily.
“He was the smartest person I ever worked with.””
A pause.
“And the most dangerous.””
Lily felt a chill.
“Was he part of Project Black?””
Arthur looked at the documents.
“I thought he was trying to destroy it.””
The investigator frowned.
“But he was receiving money from it.””
Arthur had no answer.
Because this changed everything.
If Daniel Cross had been involved from the beginning, then Arthur’s understanding of the past was incomplete.
Someone had manipulated both sides.
Someone had allowed Arthur to believe he was fighting against the system while secretly being part of it.
Then the room’s security alarm suddenly activated.
Everyone froze.
Arthur immediately turned.
“What happened?””
The investigator checked the system.
“Someone accessed the building.””
“Who?””
The screen showed an unknown vehicle approaching.
Arthur moved toward the window.
Lily stood.
“Dad?””
Arthur looked outside.
A black sedan had stopped near the entrance.
No one got out.
No movement.
Just waiting.
Arthur knew that was intentional.
Whoever was outside wanted him to know they were there.
The investigator spoke quietly.
“Should we call security?””
Arthur continued watching.
“No.””
Lily looked worried.
“Why?””
“Because whoever it is already knows we’re here.””
The car door opened.
One person stepped out.
A man in his late sixties.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
Calm expression.
Arthur stared.
The years disappeared instantly.
Because he knew that face.
The man walked slowly toward the entrance.
And when the door opened, he looked directly at Arthur.
“Hello, Arthur.””
Lily looked between them.
Arthur did not move.
“Daniel.””
The man smiled slightly.
“I see you finally found Project Black.””
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“You knew?””
Daniel walked inside.
“I created part of it.””
The words shocked everyone.
Lily immediately stepped back.
Arthur’s voice became colder.
“Why?””
Daniel looked around the room.
“Because someone had to understand how powerful families protect themselves.””
Arthur stared at him.
“You were supposed to help me destroy it.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“And you were supposed to understand that destroying a system like that is impossible.””
Arthur took a step forward.
“You lied to me.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost worse.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel reached into his coat and placed a small envelope on the table.
“What’s that?””
“The truth.””
Arthur did not touch it.
“About what?””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“About why Richard married you.””
Lily froze.
Arthur’s expression changed.
“What did you say?””
Daniel looked at the envelope.
“Richard’s marriage was never just about love.””
The room became silent.
Lily felt the world shift beneath her.
Because suddenly the question was no longer what Richard had done.
The question was why he chose her.
Daniel pushed the envelope forward.
“And once you read what’s inside…”
He looked at Arthur.
“You’ll understand that Richard Whitmore’s greatest secret was never Project Black.””
May you like
A pause.
“It was Lily.””
