Chapter 6: The Name Hidden Inside Project Black
Arthur Whitmore had faced difficult moments before.
He had faced storms.
Losses.
Betrayals.
Situations where every possible choice carried consequences.
But nothing prepared him for seeing that name on the screen.
A name that should not have been there.
A name connected to his own past.
The room remained silent.
Nobody wanted to speak first.
The document on the screen appeared simple at first glance.
A collection of records.
Dates.
Financial information.
Private notes.
But buried among those details was something that changed everything.
At the top of the page was a single reference:
PROJECT BLACK — INTERNAL FAMILY ARCHIVE.
And beneath it:
ARTHUR WHITMORE CONNECTION: CONFIRMED.
Arthur stared at the words.
His own name.
Inside Richard Whitmore’s hidden files.
Inside a secret project that Richard had spent years protecting.
Lily noticed the change in her father immediately.
She had seen Arthur angry.
She had seen him determined.
But she had rarely seen him speechless.
“Dad…”
Arthur did not respond.
The investigator looked between them.
“Do you know why your name would be in these files?””
Arthur slowly shook his head.
“No.””
But his voice suggested something else.
Something he was not saying.
Lily leaned closer.
“What is it?””
Arthur looked at her.
For a moment, she saw hesitation.
Not fear.
Not uncertainty.
Something deeper.
Pain.
“There are things about my past I never told you.””
The words surprised her.
“Why?””
Arthur looked back at the screen.
“Because I thought they were over.””
The room remained quiet.
The investigator carefully closed the document.
“We should review this privately.””
Arthur nodded.
A few minutes later, the others left the room, leaving Arthur and Lily alone.
The silence between them felt heavy.
Lily had spent the entire day learning that the person she married was not who she thought he was.
Now she was discovering that her own father had secrets too.
“Dad.””
Arthur looked at her.
“Tell me the truth.””
He knew that tone.
Lily was no longer a scared woman asking for protection.
She was his daughter asking for honesty.
Arthur sat down.
“When I was younger, before you were born, I worked with people connected to the Whitmore family.””
Lily frowned.
“Worked with them?””
“Yes.””
“What kind of work?””
Arthur looked away.
“Security. Investigations. Protecting people who had dangerous information.””
Lily slowly understood.
“You knew Richard’s family?””
“Not like this.””
Arthur paused.
“I knew his father.””
A cold feeling moved through Lily.
“Richard’s father?””
Arthur nodded.
“He was different from Richard in some ways.””
“And in other ways?””
Arthur sighed.
“He believed power meant you had the right to control everything around you.””
Lily looked at the document again.
“Project Black.””
Arthur nodded.
“Your husband’s family has been hiding something for a long time.””
Lily whispered:
“And you were part of it?””
Arthur took a moment.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised her.
He did not make excuses.
He did not avoid the question.
“I was young. I thought I was helping people. I thought I was protecting the right side.””
“But?””
Arthur looked down.
“But sometimes you don’t realize what you’re protecting until it’s too late.””
Lily sat beside him.
“What happened?””
Arthur looked toward the window.
The memory was clearly painful.
“Years ago, Richard’s father created a private network. He collected information on powerful people. Business leaders.
Officials. Anyone who could influence the Whitmore family.””
“Why?””
“Control.””
The answer was immediate.
“He believed information was the strongest weapon.””
Lily looked at the screen.
“And Project Black?””
Arthur nodded.
“That was the archive.””
A pause.
“Everything they collected.””
Lily felt sick.
“Then why is your name there?””
Arthur did not answer.
Because he knew the answer.
He just did not want to say it.
Finally, he spoke.
“Because I helped create the system that stored those files.””
Lily stared at him.
“You helped them?””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“I helped build something I thought would protect innocent people.””
He looked at her.
“I didn’t know it would become something used to control them.””
For the first time that day, Lily saw something she had never seen before.
Her father blaming himself.
“You were trying to do the right thing.””
Arthur shook his head.
“Intentions don’t erase consequences.””
Lily reached for his hand.
“Dad.””
He looked at her.
“You saved me today.””
Arthur smiled sadly.
“I should have saved you sooner.””
The words hurt because they were coming from someone who loved her.
Lily squeezed his hand.
“You came.””
Arthur nodded.
“And I’ll keep coming.””
Before they could say more, the door opened.
The investigator returned.
His expression was serious.
“We unlocked another file.””
Arthur stood immediately.
“What did you find?””
The man placed a tablet on the table.
A video file appeared.
Created years earlier.
Arthur looked at the date.
The recording was from fifteen years ago.
Lily noticed something.
“That was before Richard and I met.””
“Yes,” Arthur said.
The investigator pressed play.
The screen showed an older man sitting in an office.
Richard’s father.
Victor Whitmore.
He looked older, but the confidence was unmistakable.
The recording began.
“If you are watching this, then someone has discovered Project Black.””
Arthur froze.
Victor continued.
“The archive was never meant to protect the family.””
Lily looked at her father.
The room became completely still.
Victor’s voice continued.
“It was created because the family needed insurance.””
Arthur leaned closer.
“Insurance against what?””
The recording continued.
“Every powerful family eventually creates enemies. The mistake is believing those enemies come from outside.””
A pause.
“The greatest threats usually come from inside.””
Lily felt a chill.
Victor continued.
“There is one person who knows the truth about Project Black.””
The screen flickered.
Then a name appeared.
Arthur.
Nobody spoke.
Arthur looked stunned.
Lily looked at him.
The investigator slowly stepped back.
Victor’s recording continued.
“Arthur Whitmore was the only person who tried to shut it down.””
Arthur’s breathing changed.
“He knew too much.””
The video stopped.
Silence.
Lily looked at her father.
“You tried to stop them?””
Arthur nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I had buried it.””
The investigator looked at the tablet.
“But someone reopened it.””
Arthur immediately understood.
Richard.
The question was why.
Why now?
Why after Lily’s recording?
Why after the confrontation?
Then another thought appeared.
Maybe Richard had not discovered Project Black today.
Maybe he had been using it all along.
The investigator received an alert.
“Sir.””
Arthur turned.
“What?””
“Someone is trying to access the archive remotely.””
“Who?””
The investigator checked.
Then his face changed.
“Richard Whitmore.””
Arthur stood.
“He knows.””
Lily’s heart raced.
“What does he know?””
Arthur looked toward the door.
“That we found the truth.””
Across the city, Richard sat alone in his office.
The same documents were open in front of him.
The same hidden archive.
But his expression was no longer confident.
He had received the notification.
Someone had accessed Project Black.
Someone had opened the files.
Someone had found what he spent years protecting.
Richard stared at Arthur’s name on the screen.
For years, he believed Arthur was just an obstacle.
A father.
An old enemy from the past.
But now he understood.
Arthur was the one person who could destroy everything.
Richard picked up his phone.
He made a call.
The person on the other end answered immediately.
“It’s time.””
A pause.
“Yes.””
Richard looked out at the city lights.
“Bring me the original file.””
Another pause.
“And make sure Arthur Whitmore never sees what’s inside.””
He ended the call.
Richard had spent years hiding the truth.
Now he was willing to do anything to keep it buried.
May you like
But he had forgotten one important thing.
Secrets are hardest to protect after someone discovers where they are hidden.
