Chapter 9: The Secret My Father Kept From Me
I found the letter by accident.
That was the worst part.
Not because my father hid it.
But because I wasn’t supposed to find it.
I was cleaning the study because my father asked me to organize some old documents.
He had been distracted lately.
Between the problems with my stepmother and Ethan, he seemed exhausted.
I didn’t blame him.
But I also noticed something.
He had become quieter.
Like he was carrying something else.
At first, I thought it was stress.
Then I found the envelope.
It was hidden inside an old folder.
My name was written on the front.
My heart stopped.
My name.
Not my father’s.
Mine.
I stared at it for a long moment.
I should have left it alone.
I knew that.
But something inside me told me this was something important.
I opened it.
And the first sentence changed everything.
“Dear daughter, if you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth myself.””
I sat down.
My hands started shaking.
I kept reading.
The letter wasn’t from my father.
It was from my biological mother.
A letter she had written years ago.
A letter I had never seen.
My mother.
The woman who passed away when I was young.
I barely remembered her.
Only small things.
Her perfume.
Her laugh.
The way she used to sing while cooking.
I had spent years wishing I had more memories.
And now I was holding her words.
But the letter wasn’t what I expected.
It wasn’t just a goodbye.
It was a warning.
She wrote about my father.
About their marriage.
About things she had been afraid to say.
And one sentence made my heart stop.
“I hope one day you understand why I left.””
Left?
My mother didn’t leave.
That was what everyone told me.
She was gone.
That was all I knew.
But this letter suggested something else.
Something much bigger.
I read faster.
And then I heard footsteps.
I looked up.
My father was standing in the doorway.
His face changed when he saw the letter in my hand.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered:
“Where did you find that?””
I stood up.
“What is this?””
His eyes filled with sadness.
“Please.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No more secrets.””
Those words surprised him.
Because they were his own words.
The same words he had said to Mia.
The same words he had demanded from my stepmother.
Now they were coming back to him.
I held up the letter.
“You knew about this?””
He looked away.
And that answer destroyed me.
Because yes.
He knew.
My father closed the door.
Then he sat down.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
I laughed quietly.
“I spent my whole life thinking everyone was protecting me.””
He looked at me.
“But everyone was just protecting themselves.””
He didn’t argue.
Because it was true.
Then my father finally told me the story.
The story I was never supposed to know.
And by the end of it…
I realized the biggest secret in my family had nothing to do with Mia.
Nothing to do with my stepmother.
May you like
It was about me.
And the truth about my mother would change everything I believed about my past.
