Chapter 8: The Stranger At Our Door

The knock came early.

Too early.

I was still half asleep when I heard it.

At first, I thought I imagined it.

Then it came again.

Three loud knocks.

My father opened the door.

And I heard a voice I didn’t recognize.

“Are you Daniel?””

I sat up.

Something about that voice made me uncomfortable.

I walked downstairs quietly.

My father was standing at the entrance.

A man I had never seen before was standing outside.

He looked angry.

Not confused.

Not lost.

Angry.

“Yes,” my father answered.

“Who are you?””

The man stared at him.

“You don’t know me?””

My father frowned.

“No.””

The man laughed bitterly.

“That figures.””

My stepmother appeared behind my father.

The second she saw the stranger, all color disappeared from her face.

“Oh no.””

Those two words changed everything.

My father turned around.

“You know him?””

She didn’t answer.

The stranger looked at her.

“Of course she knows me.””

The tension in the room became unbearable.

My father stepped outside.

“Who are you?””

The man looked directly at him.

“I’m Ethan.””

Then he looked at my stepmother.

“Her son.””

Nobody spoke.

Even though we knew about him now, seeing him standing there made it real.

My father looked back at my stepmother.

“You told me he was in trouble.””

Ethan laughed.

“In trouble?””

He shook his head.

“She didn’t tell you much, did she?””

My stepmother looked terrified.

“Ethan, please.””

“No.””

His voice was filled with years of anger.

“No more secrets.””

My father stepped aside.

“Come inside.””

My stepmother looked nervous.

But nobody stopped him.

Ethan entered the house.

And immediately, I noticed something.

He wasn’t there because he wanted money.

He was there because he wanted answers.

He sat down.

My father looked at him.

“Tell me what’s going on.””

Ethan looked at my stepmother.

Then back at my father.

“She never told you the whole story.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“I’m starting to realize that.””

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Before you married her, she told me she wanted a fresh start.””

My stepmother looked down.

“She moved away.””

My father looked confused.

“And?””

“And she left me behind.””

The words hit the room.

My stepmother immediately reacted.

“That’s not true.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Really?””

His voice broke slightly.

“You left me with my grandmother and disappeared.””

My stepmother started crying.

“I was trying to build a life.””

“And I wasn’t part of that life?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no easy answer.

I watched my father carefully.

He looked devastated.

Not because Ethan existed.

Because he realized his wife had hidden an entire chapter of her life.

“I thought you trusted me,” he said quietly.

My stepmother looked at him.

“I do.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“But you trusted me with a version of yourself.””

That hurt because it was true.

We all have parts of ourselves we hide.

But some secrets are too big.

Some secrets change everything.

Ethan explained that he wasn’t facing criminal charges like my stepmother claimed.

He had made financial mistakes.

Bad choices.

But nothing like what she described.

The twenty thousand dollars?

It wasn’t for legal problems.

It was to pay off debts he had accumulated.

My father looked at my stepmother.

“You lied.””

She cried.

“I was scared.””

“You always say that.””

Her face changed.

Because she knew.

Fear had become her excuse.

Just like Mia used jealousy.

Everyone in this house had been using something to justify hurting others.

And maybe that was why everything had fallen apart.

Because nobody wanted to face the truth.

Later that night, after Ethan left, my father sat alone in the living room.

I walked over.

“You okay?””

He looked tired.

“I don’t know.””

That was the first time I heard him admit uncertainty.

“I spent years thinking I knew my family.””

I sat beside him.

“Maybe you still do.””

He looked at me.

“But they hid things.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He sighed.

“I don’t want this house to become a place where everyone hides.””

I understood.

Because I didn’t want that either.

But the next morning, another secret appeared.

This time, it wasn’t from my stepmother.

It wasn’t from Mia.

It was from someone I never expected.

My father.

May you like

And when I found out what he had been hiding…

I wondered if anyone in my family had ever truly been honest.
