Chapter 9: The Family Secret Buried In The Past

I didn’t sleep that night.

Again.

It felt like my entire life was being rebuilt from pieces I no longer recognized.

My first wife had secrets.

Sarah had secrets.

David had secrets.

And now I was discovering something worse.

My own family had secrets.

The next morning, I called my brother.

“Can we meet?””

He sounded surprised.

“Sure. Everything okay?””

I almost laughed.

Everything okay.

That phrase had become meaningless.

“Just meet me.””

He agreed.

An hour later, we sat across from each other.

My brother looked exactly the same.

Same smile.

Same calm expression.

Same confidence.

And suddenly that bothered me.

“How’s Michael?””

I watched him carefully.

“Why do you ask?””

He shrugged.

“He’s your son.””

I leaned forward.

“Were you involved with Elena’s company?””

His expression changed.

Barely.

But enough.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

He laughed.

“Where is this coming from?””

“Answer me.””

The smile disappeared.

“Marcus, what’s going on?””

I placed a copy of the email on the table.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

He sighed.

“I knew Elena was investigating something.””

My hands tightened.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to handle it.””

I stared at him.

“Handle it?””

“Yes.””

“You watched me bury my wife.””

His face fell.

“I didn’t know she would die.””

That sentence.

That terrible sentence.

“I didn’t know she would die.””

Not:

I didn’t know she was in danger.

Not:

I didn’t know she needed help.

Just:

I didn’t know she would die.

“What happened that night?””

He looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Stop lying.””

His eyes lifted.

“You think I wanted this?””

“I think everyone keeps making choices and calling them protection.””

He became quiet.

Then he said:

“Elena was planning to expose someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“David says you were involved.””

My brother laughed bitterly.

“David would say that.””

“Why?””

“Because David was the one Elena trusted.””

That surprised me.

“What?””

My brother leaned back.

“Your wife wasn’t afraid of me.””

He paused.

“She was afraid of David.””

I stared.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

My head spun.

Everyone had a different version.

Everyone had a different villain.

But someone was lying.

I needed to know who.

When I returned home, Michael was waiting.

“You found something.””

It wasn’t a question.

I sat beside him.

“Your mom knew she was in trouble.””

His eyes filled instantly.

“I knew.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked down.

“She told me.””

My heart stopped.

“What did she tell you?””

He swallowed.

“She said if anything happened, I needed to remember one thing.””

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“She said Dad would believe me someday.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because my son had been waiting six years for me to believe him.

And I had spent those years thinking he was just distant.

“Michael…”

“She knew someone would try to make me forget.””

My voice shook.

“Forget what?””

He looked toward the stairs.

Then whispered:

“What I saw.””

I froze.

“What did you see?””

Michael’s eyes filled with tears.

“The night Mom died.””

I grabbed his hand.

“Tell me.””

He shook his head.

“I was scared.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t.””

And for the first time, I realized something.

The night Elena died wasn’t just a memory.

It was a secret.

A secret my son had been protecting from everyone.

Including me.

“What did you see, Michael?””

He took a deep breath.

Then whispered:

“Someone was there before the crash.””

My blood turned cold.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

May you like

And said the one name I never expected.

“Uncle Ryan.””
