Chapter 12: The Person We Never Suspected

The police arrived within thirty minutes.

They checked the windows.

The doors.

The security system.

Everything.

But they found nothing.

No fingerprints.

No clear evidence.

Nothing.

It was almost like whoever entered wanted us to know they could.

That was the message.

Not theft.

Fear.

The next morning, I changed the locks.

Then I did something I should have done years ago.

I sat down with Michael and asked him what else he remembered.

Not as a father.

Not as someone looking for answers.

As someone finally willing to listen.

“After the crash,” he said quietly, “Uncle Ryan came back.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He came to the hospital.””

“Yes.””

“He asked me something.””

“What?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“He asked if I told anyone about the argument.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“What did you say?””

“I said no.””

“Why?””

“Because Mom told me not to.””

I froze.

“What?””

Michael nodded.

“She told me that if anything happened, I shouldn’t trust everyone.””

My heart sank.

“Did she say who?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But she looked at Uncle Ryan.””

That sentence confirmed everything.

I called Ryan.

He answered immediately.

“Marcus.””

“Did you ask Michael if he told anyone about the argument?””

Silence.

Long silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My hands tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That he knew something dangerous.””

I closed my eyes.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

Ryan went quiet.

“You made decisions for me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

I ended the call.

I was done hearing it.

Later that afternoon, Sarah came to me.

“I found something.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She handed me a folder.

“Jordan’s room.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“I wasn’t searching him.””

She looked ashamed.

“I was cleaning.””

Inside the folder were printed messages.

My stomach tightened.

“Where did he get these?””

“I don’t know.””

I read the first one.

Then the second.

My blood ran cold.

They weren’t messages from Jordan.

They were messages to him.

From an unknown number.

*Keep pushing Michael away.*

Another:

*Your father needs to understand where his loyalty belongs.*

Another:

*When Michael leaves, everything becomes easier.*

I looked at Sarah.

“This started before?””

She nodded.

“I think so.””

My hands shook.

Because suddenly Jordan wasn’t the beginning.

He was just another person being manipulated.

“Where is he?””

“Upstairs.””

I found Jordan sitting on his bed.

He looked at my face.

And immediately knew.

“You found them.””

I stared.

“Who sent these?””

He looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Jordan.””

“I swear.””

I believed him.

Because fear looked different from guilt.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

He shrugged.

“Because they said they would expose me.””

“Expose what?””

He didn’t answer.

“Jordan.””

Finally, he whispered:

“The night Elena died.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“They said they knew what happened.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Jordan looked at me.

And said:

“The person who has been controlling everything.””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father’s old business partner.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Jordan swallowed.

“David.””

My blood went cold.

Because the man who claimed he was protecting Elena…

might have been the person destroying her.

And now I had no idea who to believe.

Not my brother.

Not my wife.

Not even my closest friend.

The truth was finally coming out.

May you like

But the deeper I went…

the less certain I was that I wanted to find it.
