Chapter 8: The Enemy Sitting at Our Table
The press conference happened two days later.
Richard Caldwell stood in front of dozens of cameras wearing a perfect suit and a fake expression of disappointment.
I watched from my father's office.
"He looks like he believes his own lies.""
My father stood beside me.
"That's what makes dangerous people dangerous.""
The television showed Richard speaking.
"I have always respected Arthur Bennett.""
A lie.
Everyone in the room knew it.
"But recently, certain individuals have attempted to destroy my family's reputation.""
He paused.
"And unfortunately, my daughter has been caught in the middle.""
My jaw tightened.
My father remained calm.
Then Richard said the words we expected.
"My daughter was manipulated into a relationship that benefited the Bennett family.""
I looked at the screen.
Unbelievable.
He was turning Vanessa into a victim.
And me into the villain.
Emily entered the office carrying documents.
"He's moving faster than expected.""
My father looked at her.
"How bad is it?""
"Social media is already reacting.""
She handed me her tablet.
Thousands of comments.
Some defended my father.
Others believed Richard.
Because people loved simple stories.
Rich man.
Poor family.
Broken engagement.
Everyone wanted a villain.
And Richard was giving them one.
"What do we do?""
I asked.
My father looked at the screen.
"We don't fight lies with louder lies.""
"Then what?""
"We show the truth.""
That evening, my father held a private meeting with his legal team.
I sat there listening.
For the first time, I saw the world my father had lived in.
Contracts.
Investigations.
Corporate battles.
People trying to destroy each other without ever raising their voices.
It was exhausting.
After the meeting, I found my father alone.
"You could have destroyed them years ago.""
He looked confused.
"Who?""
"The Caldwells.""
He smiled sadly.
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you?""
He looked at the city.
"Because winning against someone doesn't always mean defeating them.""
I didn't understand.
"Sometimes the greatest victory is knowing you never became like them.""
That was my father.
Even after being betrayed, he refused to become cruel.
The next morning, something unexpected happened.
Diane Caldwell came to the office.
Alone.
No cameras.
No confidence.
Just a woman who looked exhausted.
Security almost stopped her.
But my father allowed her inside.
When she entered his office, she looked smaller than I remembered.
"I owe you an apology.""
My father said nothing.
Diane swallowed.
"I was wrong.""
Still nothing.
"I judged you.""
My father looked at her.
"No.""
She looked confused.
"I didn't judge you.""
His voice was calm.
"You revealed yourself.""
That hurt her.
I could see it.
Because the truth was harder to fight.
"I thought you weren't someone important.""
My father nodded.
"I know.""
"I was wrong.""
"You were.""
The room became silent.
Then Diane looked at me.
"I hurt you too.""
I didn't respond.
Because I didn't know if an apology could repair anything.
Finally, she said:
"Richard is planning something bigger.""
My father frowned.
"What?""
She looked nervous.
"He wasn't trying to steal money.""
"Then what was he trying to do?""
She looked at the documents on the desk.
"Control.""
My father stared at her.
"Explain.""
Diane took a deep breath.
"Richard discovered years ago that Bennett Global was preparing a major expansion.""
She looked at me.
"He wanted access before the announcement.""
"Why?""
"Because whoever controls Bennett Global controls the future of several industries.""
I felt cold.
This wasn't a simple financial crime.
This was an attack.
"Who helped him?""
My father asked.
Diane looked away.
"I don't know.""
But I knew she was hiding something.
My father knew too.
"You're protecting someone.""
Her eyes moved toward the floor.
"I can't.""
"Why?""
Because her answer shocked us.
"Because the person behind this is someone you trust.""
The room froze.
Someone we trusted.
My mind raced through every person.
Executives.
Partners.
Friends.
Family.
My father looked at Diane.
"Who?""
May you like
She whispered:
"Someone who has worked beside you for years.""
