Chapter 6: The Betrayal Hidden Behind a Smile
The hardest betrayal isn't when an enemy hurts you.
You expect enemies to attack.
The hardest betrayal is when someone you trusted smiles while holding the knife.
For years, I believed Vanessa loved me.
I believed our relationship was different.
I believed she saw the same things in me that my father saw.
My kindness.
My determination.
My loyalty.
But maybe I had been in love with an idea.
Not a person.
Two days after discovering the letter, I received another message.
This time from Emily.
I need you and your father to come to the office immediately.
Something happened.
When we arrived, the atmosphere was completely different.
Employees were whispering.
Executives were gathered.
Emily looked terrified.
"What happened?""
She handed my father a tablet.
"Someone transferred money from one of the foundation accounts.""
My father's face hardened.
"How much?""
"Thirty million.""
My heart dropped.
"Who?""
Emily looked at me.
"We traced the authorization.""
She paused.
"To an account connected to Richard Caldwell.""
The room went silent.
My father closed his eyes.
Not from surprise.
From disappointment.
"I gave him a chance.""
I looked at him.
"You trusted him?""
"Not completely.""
He sighed.
"But I wanted to believe people could choose better.""
That sounded exactly like my father.
Always believing.
Even when people didn't deserve it.
Then Emily said:
"There's something else.""
"What?""
She hesitated.
"The authorization happened yesterday.""
I frowned.
"Yesterday?""
She nodded.
"And the security footage shows someone else was present.""
She turned the tablet around.
A video appeared.
The camera showed a woman entering the private office.
A woman I recognized immediately.
Vanessa.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
"No.""
The word came out before I could stop it.
Emily looked sorry.
"I'm sorry.""
My father didn't say anything.
He just watched.
The video continued.
Vanessa looked around the office.
Then she opened a drawer.
The same drawer where my father's confidential files were stored.
My hands shook.
Because suddenly, every memory changed.
Every conversation.
Every promise.
Every moment I thought was love.
My father quietly placed his hand on my shoulder.
I expected anger.
Instead, he said:
"Son.""
I looked at him.
"Don't let someone else's choices make you lose your own heart.""
I looked at the screen again.
At Vanessa.
The woman who stood beside me at the altar.
The woman who watched my father get humiliated.
The woman who apologized only after discovering who he really was.
And now...
The woman connected to the betrayal that could destroy everything my father built.
I whispered:
"Why?""
My father looked at the screen.
"Because some people don't love what you are.""
He paused.
"They love what they think they can get from you.""
Outside the office windows, the city continued moving.
People walked.
Cars passed.
Life continued.
But inside that room...
Everything had changed.
Because the wedding that never happened had revealed something far bigger than a broken engagement.
It had revealed a war.
And my father was no longer fighting to protect his fortune.
He was fighting to protect everything he had spent his life building.

And now...
I was standing beside him. :::
