Chapter 8: The Night Mark Chose Me Over His Own Family

I waited until everyone left before I asked Catherine the question.

Not because I was afraid of the answer.

Because I needed to hear it without anyone else watching my reaction.

For two days, my life had been a series of discoveries.

Each one changed the way I saw the past.

The house.

The trust.

The company.

Richard’s lies.

The hidden documents.

The stolen identity.

Every secret revealed something new about my husband.

But every secret also reminded me of something painful.

Mark had known.

He had known there were problems.

He had known his father was dangerous.

He had known someone was trying to use my name.

And he had carried all of it while I sat beside him believing we were simply fighting his illness.

I followed Catherine back into her office after the hearing.

The building was almost empty.

The hallway lights were dim.

For the first time since I met her, she looked tired.

Not professionally tired.

Emotionally tired.

Like she had been carrying Mark’s final requests for months and had been waiting for the right moment to finally put them down.

I closed the door behind me.

“Tell me.””

Catherine looked at me.

“Laura.””

“No.””

My voice shook slightly.

“But I need to know.””

She nodded.

Then she reached into a locked drawer.

She removed a small envelope.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that handwriting.

Even before she placed it on the desk.

Mark.

My fingers hovered over it.

“What is this?””

“Something Mark left for you.””

“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””

“Because he specifically instructed me not to.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he knew you would read it before you were ready.””

I almost laughed.

Because that sounded exactly like him.

Mark always knew me better than I knew myself.

“What did he say?””

Catherine sat down.

“He said you would have questions.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What questions?””

“Why he didn’t tell you.””

My throat tightened.

“Did he know I would feel hurt?””

“Yes.””

“Did he know I would think he didn’t trust me?””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

Catherine continued.

“He wrote that the hardest part was not knowing how to protect you.””

“Why?””

“Because every option hurt you.””

I slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Not typed.

Not prepared by a lawyer.

Just Mark’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that filled grocery lists.

Birthday cards.

Little notes he left beside my coffee cup.

My hands started shaking.

I began reading.

Laura,

If you are reading this, then you already know I kept something from you.

I am sorry.

That was the first thing he wrote.

Not an explanation.

Not an excuse.

An apology.

I had to stop for a moment.

Because that was Mark.

Even when he was the one suffering, he apologized.

I continued.

I know you are probably hurt.

You may think I didn’t trust you.

Please believe me when I say that is the opposite of the truth.

I trusted you more than anyone.

That is why I was afraid.

I looked down.

My eyes blurred.

The letter continued.

You have spent our entire marriage trying to protect everyone else.

You protected me when I was sick.

You protected the children when I was too tired to play.

You protected my parents when they made things difficult because you believed family mattered.

Laura, your kindness is one of the reasons I love you.

But it is also the reason I worried.

Because you see the best in people long after they stop deserving it.

I closed my eyes.

Because he was right.

I always wanted to believe people could change.

Even Richard.

Especially Richard.

I kept reading.

The night I changed the trust, I had just learned what my father was planning.

I knew he had financial problems.

I knew he had made decisions that could hurt the company.

But I did not know how far he was willing to go.

Until that night.

My heart started beating faster.

The night.

The night Richard kept mentioning.

The night everything changed.

I continued.

I went to his office.

I wanted answers.

I wanted to believe there was an explanation.

There wasn’t.

I looked at Catherine.

She was watching me carefully.

I kept reading.

Dad had prepared documents.

Not to protect the company.

To protect himself.

He created a plan that would move responsibility for certain financial decisions onto me.

I froze.

Onto Mark.

My husband.

The dying man.

The son.

The person who had spent his entire life trying to earn his father’s approval.

I continued.

If the problems became public, Dad planned to say I was involved.

He planned to make it look like I approved everything.

I covered my mouth.

“No.””

Catherine nodded.

“That was the night.””

Mark had discovered his father was willing to sacrifice him.

I kept reading.

I confronted him.

I asked him why.

Do you know what he said?

My hands tightened around the paper.

I already knew it would hurt.

He said:

“You are my son. You will carry this.””

I stopped.

Because those words explained everything.

Richard did not see Mark as a person.

He saw him as a shield.

A replacement.

A way to protect himself.

The letter continued.

That was when I understood something.

My father did not see me as his son.

He saw me as his legacy.

His insurance.

His solution.

I looked out the window.

The city moved below.

Cars.

People.

Life continuing.

While I sat there learning that my husband had spent his final months realizing his own father never truly saw him.

I continued.

That night, I changed the trust.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Not because I hated my father.

Because I finally accepted that love does not mean allowing someone to destroy you.

I wiped my eyes.

Because that was the most Mark thing he could have written.

Even then.

Even after betrayal.

He did not choose hatred.

He chose boundaries.

The next paragraph made me stop.

But there is one more thing you need to know.

I felt my stomach tighten.

I did not create the trust only because of Dad.

I created it because I discovered someone had used your information.

I already knew this.

But seeing it in Mark’s words made it different.

I kept reading.

When I found the evidence, my first fear was that you would blame yourself.

My second fear was that whoever did it would realize you were the easiest person to hurt.

That sentence stayed with me.

Because that was exactly what Richard tried to do.

He tried to make me feel powerless.

He tried to make me question myself.

The letter continued.

I wanted to tell you everything.

Every day.

I almost did.

But every time I looked at you, I saw how exhausted you were.

You were losing me.

I couldn’t stand the thought of making you fight another battle.

I stopped reading.

Because suddenly I understood.

Mark wasn’t hiding things because he didn’t love me enough.

He was hiding them because he loved me too much.

He was trying to give me one last gift.

A few peaceful days.

A few more moments where I could just be his wife.

Not his protector.

Not a legal fighter.

Not a woman preparing for war.

The final part of the letter was shorter.

Laura,

If you are angry with me, I understand.

If you cry, I understand.

If you need time, I understand.

But please remember one thing.

You were never the person I needed protection from.

You were the person I spent my life trying to protect.

Because you were my home.

Not the house.

Not the company.

You.

Love,

Mark.

I could not hold it together anymore.

The tears came quietly.

Not the desperate tears from the funeral.

Not the broken tears from standing outside my own house.

These were different.

These were tears from finally hearing his voice again.

Catherine handed me a tissue.

“He loved you very much.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

But saying it aloud hurt.

Because love was not supposed to leave this much pain behind.

That evening, I went back to Emily’s house.

But something had changed.

I no longer felt like someone waiting for permission to return to my own life.

I felt like someone who finally understood why she had to fight.

Noah was sitting at the kitchen table.

He looked up.

“What did you find out?””

I sat across from him.

“The truth.””

“What truth?””

I looked at Mark’s watch on his wrist.

“Your dad wasn’t hiding something because he didn’t trust us.””

Noah waited.

“He was protecting us.””

His shoulders relaxed.

Like he had been carrying that question too.

“He loved us.””

“Yes.””

Noah looked down.

“Did he know he was going to die?””

The question broke me.

I took a moment before answering.

“I think he knew it was possible.””

Noah nodded.

“I wish he told me.””

“I know.””

“I would have helped.””

“I know.””

That was the hardest part.

Mark thought he had to carry everything.

But he had a son who wanted to stand beside him.

A wife who would have fought with him.

A family who loved him.

The next morning, I woke up to a message from Catherine.

*Richard has requested an emergency shareholder meeting.*

I stared at the words.

Then another message appeared.

*He is attempting to regain control of Bennett Holdings before the trust transfer becomes permanent.*

I read it twice.

Then a third message came.

*Laura, there is one more thing Mark left behind. Something even I did not know about until this morning.*

My heart started racing.

*What is it?*

Her reply came almost immediately.

*A second trust.*

I frowned.

*For what?*

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, her message arrived.

*For the person Richard Bennett feared most.*

I stared at the screen.

Because there was only one person Richard had spent his entire life trying to control.

His son.

Mark.

And somehow…

May you like

Even after death…

Mark had found a way to take away Richard’s last weapon.
