Chapter 7: The Secret My Husband Never Wanted Me To Know
I did not remember driving back to Emily’s house.
I remembered leaving the restaurant.
I remembered the cold air hitting my face when I stepped outside.
I remembered Catherine asking if I was okay.
But after that…
Everything felt blurred.
Because Richard Bennett had done exactly what he wanted.
He had planted a question in my mind.
Not a fact.
Not evidence.
A question.
And questions were dangerous.
Especially when they involved someone you loved.
Especially when that person was no longer alive to answer.
“Ask Catherine about the night Mark changed the trust.””
Those words repeated over and over.
I hated that they affected me.
I hated that a man who had spent the last two days lying to me could still find a way to make me doubt the one person who had never hurt me.
Mark.
When I walked through Emily’s front door, Noah immediately looked up from the couch.
One look at my face and he knew something was wrong.
“Mom?””
I forced myself to breathe.
“I’m okay.””
He frowned.
“You’re doing that thing.””
“What thing?””
“The thing where you say you’re okay when you’re definitely not okay.””
For a second, I almost smiled.
Because that was something Mark used to say.
Noah had inherited so much from him.
The same eyes.
The same patience.
The same ability to notice what other people missed.
I sat down beside him.
“Your grandfather said something.””
Noah’s expression changed instantly.
“What?””
“He said your dad was hiding something from me.””
Noah looked angry.
“Of course he did.””
“But…”
I stopped.
Because saying it aloud made it feel more real.
“He said there was a reason your dad changed the trust.””
Noah stared at me.
“What reason?””
“I don’t know.””
The words hurt.
Because I realized I had spent the last two days discovering pieces of my husband’s life that I never knew existed.
The trust.
The documents.
The recordings.
The company problems.
How much had Mark carried alone?
How much had I missed?
Noah was quiet for a moment.
Then he said something I did not expect.
“Do you believe Grandpa?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
No hesitation.
No doubt.
No.
I did not believe Richard.
“But I believe Dad might have had a reason.””
Noah nodded slowly.
“Then find out.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Find out what Dad was protecting you from.””
That was exactly what Mark would have said.
Not because he wanted revenge.
Because he wanted the truth.
The next morning, I went to Catherine’s office before the hearing.
I did not waste time.
The moment she saw me, she knew.
“You spoke with Richard.””
I nodded.
“What did he tell you?””
I sat down.
“He said I should ask you about the night Mark changed the trust.””
Catherine went completely still.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Still.
That was enough.
My heart sank.
“You know.””
She looked away.
“Laura…”
“No.””
I leaned forward.
“I need the truth.””
A long silence filled the room.
Finally, Catherine sat across from me.
“Mark changed the trust because of something that happened the night before.””
“What happened?””
She folded her hands.
“I need you to understand something first.””
“What?””
“Your husband loved you.””
The answer surprised me.
“Why are you saying that?””
“Because what I’m about to tell you may hurt.””
My chest tightened.
“Tell me anyway.””
Catherine nodded.
“Three months before Mark died, he found out about the financial problems at Bennett Holdings.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You know part of it.””
I frowned.
“What else?””
“Mark initially believed Richard had made mistakes.””
“That sounds like Mark.””
“He wanted to believe there was an explanation.””
Of course he did.
That was always Mark.
He gave people chances they did not deserve.
“But then he found something else.””
“What?””
Catherine opened a file.
Inside was a report.
“A private investigation.””
My stomach tightened.
“Mark hired someone?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me?””
“Yes.””
I looked down.
Another secret.
Another thing my husband handled alone.
Catherine continued.
“The investigator found that someone had been accessing company information.””
“Richard?””
“No.””
That surprised me.
“Then who?””
She looked at me.
“You.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
“The investigator found activity connected to accounts under your name.””
I felt like the air had disappeared.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
“Because someone was using your identity.””
I looked at the papers.
My hands started shaking.
“Someone used my accounts?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
“To move information.””
“What information?””
“Company files.””
I stood.
“No.””
Catherine did not move.
“Laura.””
“No.””
I walked toward the window.
“No. Mark would have told me.””
“He wanted to.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Catherine looked down.
“Because he was afraid.””
Those words hurt.
Not because they were surprising.
Because they matched everything Richard had said.
My husband was afraid.
But not of me.
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would blame yourself.””
I turned.
“What?””
Catherine’s voice softened.
“Mark knew you. Better than anyone.””
She opened another document.
“He knew if someone used your name, you would immediately think you failed.””
I looked away.
Because she was right.
I would have.
I would have searched every memory.
Every conversation.
Every decision.
Trying to find the moment where I made a mistake.
“Mark believed someone close to you was involved.””
My heart stopped.
“Someone close to me?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“We don’t know.””
The answer should have comforted me.
It didn’t.
Because suddenly, everyone felt like a question.
Catherine continued.
“Mark discovered the identity issue the same week he changed the trust.””
“So he thought I was in danger.””
“Yes.””
“And he didn’t tell me because he thought whoever did it might come after me.””
“Yes.””
I sat back down.
Everything changed.
Richard had twisted the truth.
He made it sound like Mark was hiding something because he did not trust me.
The truth was the opposite.
Mark was hiding something because he trusted me so much that he wanted to protect me.
“Why didn’t he tell me before he died?””
Catherine’s expression softened.
“Because he tried.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He wrote you a letter.””
My heart raced.
“A letter?””
“Yes.””
“Where is it?””
Catherine hesitated.
“Mark left instructions.””
“What instructions?””
“That you receive it only after you understood the reason behind the trust.””
My eyes widened.
“So he knew this would happen.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew Richard.””
I closed my eyes.
Another piece.
Another layer.
Mark had not been hiding from me.
He had been leaving breadcrumbs.
Waiting until I was ready.
The hearing that afternoon was nothing like television.
There were no dramatic speeches.
No one shouting.
No instant justice.
Just paperwork.
Lawyers.
Arguments.
People discussing my life like it was a business decision.
Richard sat across the room.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
Like the man who had threatened my children did not exist.
Evelyn sat beside him.
She avoided looking at me.
That hurt more than Richard’s anger.
Because I expected him to be cruel.
I did not expect her silence.
When the judge reviewed the documents, Richard’s attorney argued that Mark’s decisions were questionable because of his medical condition.
Catherine presented the doctor’s statement.
The medical records.
The video.
The evidence of Mark’s clear thinking.
Then Richard’s attorney introduced something unexpected.
A bank record.
My name was on it.
My heart stopped.
“This account shows suspicious activity connected to Mrs. Bennett,” the attorney said.
The room shifted.
People looked at me.
I felt it.
The doubt.
The exact thing Richard wanted.
I looked at Catherine.
She was calm.
Too calm.
The attorney continued.
“We believe further investigation is necessary before allowing control of the trust.””
The judge looked at Catherine.
She stood.
“Your Honor, we anticipated this argument.””
She placed a document on the table.
“What is that?”” the judge asked.
“A forensic report.””
Catherine looked toward me.
Then back.
“Completed at Mark Bennett’s request.””
The room became silent.
The report was opened.
And within minutes, the truth became clear.
The account was mine.
But the access was not.
Someone had created a duplicate authorization.
Someone had used my information.
Someone had tried to make it appear as though I was involved.
The judge looked at Richard’s attorney.
“Do you have evidence connecting Mrs. Bennett personally?””
Silence.
“No, Your Honor.””
That silence said everything.
Richard’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
He knew.
He knew the plan had failed.
After the hearing ended, Catherine gathered the documents.
“You understand what happened?””
I nodded.
“Richard was going to use my name against me.””
“Yes.””
“He knew about the identity theft.””
“We believe so.””
“And he waited.””
“Yes.””
My hands curled into fists.
“He was going to let me take the blame.””
“Yes.””
I looked across the room.
Richard was standing near the exit.
Watching me.
For the first time, I did not see a powerful businessman.
I saw a man who was losing control.
A man who had underestimated the person he was trying to destroy.
But before he left, he stopped beside me.
“You found out.””
His voice was quiet.
I looked at him.
“You mean the truth?””
A small smile appeared.
“You still don’t know everything.””
I said nothing.
He leaned closer.
“Ask Catherine where Mark was the night he changed the trust.””
My expression hardened.
“You already told me to ask that.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His eyes narrowed.
“Because when you learn what happened that night…”
He paused.
“You’ll finally understand why your husband never told you.””
Then he walked away.
I watched him leave.
And I realized something.
Richard was no longer trying to win.
He was trying to make me doubt.
Because doubt was the last weapon he had.
But I had spent two days uncovering the truth.
And every secret Mark left behind had led me closer to him.
Not farther away.
The only question remaining was this:
What happened on that night?
The night Mark changed everything.
May you like
The night he decided protecting me mattered more than protecting his own family name.
The night my husband learned something about Bennett Holdings that changed the course of all our lives.
