Chapter 8: The Woman Diane Tried to Erase Forever

Nobody spoke after Daniel revealed the message.

The silence was different from before.

Before, silence meant uncertainty.

Now, it meant fear.

Because everyone in the room understood the same thing.

If Laura was alive, then Diane had spent years hiding something that could destroy everything she built.

Ryan stared at the phone screen.

The words were short.

I know where Laura is.

But those five words carried the weight of decades.

“My first wife…” Ryan whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Ryan looked at him.

“You said she disappeared.””

“She did.””

“But she’s alive?””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

Ryan took a step back.

His entire world felt unstable.

“How?””

Daniel sighed.

“That’s the question you need to ask your mother.””

Ryan immediately looked toward the door.

Emily noticed.

“Where are you going?””

“To find her.””

Robert stepped forward.

“No.””

Ryan stopped.

“No?””

“You don’t walk back into Diane’s house alone.””

Ryan frowned.

“She’s my mother.””

Robert looked at him.

“And that’s exactly why you’re vulnerable.””

The words hurt.

But Ryan knew they were true.

Because even now, part of him wanted to believe there was an explanation.

Some way to protect the image of the woman who raised him.

Some way to avoid accepting that she had destroyed lives.

Emily watched him quietly.

She saw the conflict.

The pain.

The guilt.

But she also remembered the kitchen.

She remembered calling his name.

And hearing him tell her to apologize.

“You need to understand something, Ryan.””

He looked at her.

Her voice was calm.

But firm.

“Finding out your mother lied to you doesn’t erase what you did to me.””

Ryan lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t think you do.””

He looked back at her.

“I stood there while you were hurt.””

His face tightened.

“I know.””

“I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“And you made me feel like I was the problem.””

Ryan swallowed.

“I know.””

The repetition wasn’t a defense.

It was acceptance.

For the first time, Emily believed he understood.

Not completely.

Not enough.

But more than before.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you,” she said.

Ryan nodded.

“I understand.””

That answer surprised her.

Because the old Ryan would have argued.

He would have explained.

He would have found reasons.

This Ryan simply accepted the damage.

Daniel watched them quietly.

Then his phone buzzed again.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

This time, from Laura.

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

Robert stepped closer.

“Read it.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then showed them.

I need help.

She found me.

Emily felt a chill.

“She’s afraid.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Ryan looked at the message.

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Are you sure you want to know?””

Ryan’s expression hardened.

“For the first time in my life, yes.””

Daniel took a breath.

“She’s in a small town three hours away.””

Robert immediately grabbed his keys.

“We leave now.””

Emily looked at him.

“Dad, I’m coming.””

“No.””

She frowned.

“I need answers.””

“You need rest.””

“I’ve rested for seven years.””

The room became quiet.

Emily looked at Robert.

“I spent years waiting for people to tell me the truth.””

She grabbed her jacket.

“I’m done waiting.””

Robert wanted to argue.

But he stopped.

Because he saw the determination in her eyes.

The same determination that had carried her through everything.

“Fine,” he said.

“But you stay close to me.””

Emily nodded.

Ryan stepped forward.

“I’m coming too.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel was the first to respond.

“Are you ready to hear what she says?””

Ryan looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel’s expression was serious.

“Laura may not forgive you.””

The words hit him.

Ryan looked down.

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He stepped closer.

“You were not the one who hurt her.””

Ryan looked up.

“But I believed the person who did.””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the truth.

Three hours later, they arrived at a small house outside town.

It was quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of place where someone went when they wanted to disappear.

Robert parked.

Nobody moved immediately.

Emily looked at the house.

A woman lived here.

A woman who knew Diane before anyone else.

A woman who survived what Emily almost became.

Daniel walked toward the door.

Ryan followed.

Emily and Robert stayed behind them.

Daniel knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

“Laura.””

Silence.

Then a voice.

“Who is it?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“It’s me.””

The door remained closed.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“You shouldn’t have come.””

Ryan froze.

Because even through the door, he could hear the fear.

Daniel looked at him.

“She’s scared.””

Ryan whispered:

“Because of my mother.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The lock slowly turned.

The door opened slightly.

A woman appeared.

She looked older than her age.

Tired.

But alive.

Laura looked at Daniel.

Then her eyes moved to Ryan.

Everything changed.

She immediately stepped back.

“No.””

Ryan felt the word like a punch.

“Laura…”

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“Why is he here?””

Daniel answered softly.

“He knows.””

Laura laughed bitterly.

“No, he doesn’t.””

Ryan looked down.

“I’m trying to.””

Laura stared at him.

“Trying?””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“Do you know how many years I waited for someone to ask what really happened?””

Ryan had no answer.

“How many times I thought maybe you would remember?””

Her voice broke.

“Maybe you would realize.””

Ryan looked devastated.

“I’m sorry.””

Laura shook her head.

“Don’t say that.””

“Why?””

“Because sorry is easy.””

The words echoed.

Emily understood.

Because she had felt the same.

“Truth is harder.””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

Laura looked surprised.

Maybe she expected excuses.

Maybe she expected denial.

But Ryan only looked broken.

“I need to know what happened.””

Laura stared at him.

Then at Emily.

Her expression changed.

“You’re his wife.””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

Laura looked at her.

For a moment, there was an unspoken understanding.

Two women.

Two victims of the same person.

“I’m sorry,” Laura whispered.

Emily frowned.

“For what?””

“For not warning you sooner.””

Emily felt tears forming.

“You tried.””

Laura looked down.

“I tried to warn people.””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Inside the house, everything was simple.

Nothing like Diane’s perfect home.

No expensive decorations.

No perfect image.

Just a quiet life.

A life built after survival.

Laura sat down.

“I don’t have much time.””

Ryan looked concerned.

“Why?””

“Because Diane knows where I am.””

Everyone became alert.

“How?””

Laura smiled sadly.

“Because she always finds people.””

Daniel looked angry.

“She threatened you?””

Laura nodded.

“She said if I talked, she would destroy Ryan.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

Of course.

Even after all these years.

The same weapon.

Using him.

“What did she tell you?”” Ryan asked.

Laura looked at him.

“That you were weak.””

The words hurt.

“She said you needed her.””

Ryan looked down.

“She was right.””

Laura shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“She made you believe that.””

The room became quiet.

Then Laura reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a small box.

“I kept this because I knew someday someone would need proof.””

She opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

And a recording device.

Ryan stared.

“What is that?””

Laura looked at him.

“The truth.””

She pressed a button.

A voice filled the room.

Diane’s voice.

Everyone froze.

The recording was old.

But clear.

“You don’t understand what happens when people leave me.””

Ryan’s face went pale.

Because he knew that voice.

His mother.

The woman he trusted.

The recording continued.

“You should remember who controls this family.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Diane’s voice said the words that changed everything.

“Ryan will always choose me.””

Ryan slowly sat down.

Because that sentence destroyed the last piece of denial he had left.

Emily looked at him.

Robert looked at him.

Daniel looked at him.

And everyone understood the same thing.

Diane had never been afraid of losing Ryan.

Because she believed he belonged to her.

But now…

May you like

For the first time…

Ryan was finally free.
