Chapter 7: The Son Who Finally Turned Against His Mother
Ryan had spent his entire life believing loyalty was the same thing as love.
That was what Diane taught him.
Family comes first.
Never question your own.
Never let outsiders divide you.
Those words had followed him since childhood.
And for years, he thought they made him strong.
Now, sitting alone in his car outside Robert’s house, Ryan wondered if those words had actually made him blind.
He watched through the window.
He saw Emily sitting with her father.
He saw Daniel holding documents.
He saw the people his mother warned him about.
The people she called enemies.
But something inside him had changed.
Because enemies didn’t usually look like people searching for the truth.
And family didn’t usually make someone feel afraid.
Ryan looked at his phone.
One message from Diane.
Where are you?
Another.
We need to talk.
Another.
You are making a mistake.
He stared at the screen.
A year ago, those messages would have made him panic.
He would have rushed home.
He would have apologized.
He would have asked what he could do to fix everything.
But now…
He felt something he had never allowed himself to feel.
Anger.
Not the anger Diane created.
Not the anger she pointed at other people.
His own anger.
He started the car.
Then drove home.
For the first time, he wasn’t going back because his mother called.
He was going back because he needed answers.
When Ryan entered the house, Diane was already waiting.
She stood in the living room.
Arms crossed.
Expression cold.
“You went to see them.””
It wasn’t a question.
Ryan closed the door behind him.
“Yes.””
Diane nodded slowly.
“I knew it.””
Ryan looked at her.
“What did you know?””
“That they would turn you against me.””
He almost laughed.
Almost.
Because even now, even after everything, she still didn’t ask if he was okay.
She didn’t ask about Emily.
She didn’t ask what he discovered.
Her first concern was herself.
“Mom.””
“What?””
“I need you to answer some questions.””
Diane’s face hardened.
“No.””
Ryan froze.
“No?””
“You’re not thinking clearly.””
“I’m asking questions.””
“You’re repeating lies.””
Ryan stared at her.
“Why are you afraid of questions?””
That sentence changed her expression.
Only slightly.
But he noticed.
Diane had always been good at hiding emotions.
But Ryan knew her.
He knew when she was pretending.
“Careful,” she said.
Ryan shook his head.
“There it is again.””
“What?””
“That warning.””
He stepped closer.
“Every time someone disagrees with you, you tell them to be careful.””
Diane looked away.
“Because I know how dangerous people can be.””
“No.””
Ryan’s voice became stronger.
“Because you want people scared.””
The room went silent.
Diane looked at him.
Not like a mother looking at her son.
Like someone looking at a person who had become a problem.
“You sound like your father.””
Ryan swallowed.
“Tell me about him.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because he doesn’t matter.””
Ryan stared.
“He mattered enough for you to spend my whole life telling me he was a bad person.””
Diane said nothing.
“Why did he leave?””
“He abandoned us.””
“Why?””
“Because he was selfish.””
“Why?””
The repeated question frustrated her.
“Ryan.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I want an answer.””
Diane walked toward him.
“You were young. You don’t remember everything.””
“Then help me remember.””
She stopped.
Ryan continued.
“I remember you crying.””
Diane’s expression softened.
“I remember you telling me Dad didn’t love us.””
“Yes.””
“I remember hating him.””
Diane looked satisfied for a second.
Then Ryan continued.
“But I also remember something else.””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
“I remember Dad being scared.””
Diane froze.
Ryan looked at her.
“I was six years old.””
His voice became quieter.
“But I remember him looking at you like he was afraid.””
Diane didn’t speak.
Ryan felt his heartbeat increase.
Because he finally trusted his own memories.
Not hers.
His.
“What happened that night?””
Diane looked away.
“Nothing.””
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“Stop saying that.””
The words surprised both of them.
Because Ryan had never spoken to her like that.
Not once.
Diane’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re angry.””
“Yes.””
“Because of Emily?””
“No.””
Ryan shook his head.
“Because of you.””
The sentence hit harder than anything else.
Diane stepped back.
For the first time, Ryan saw pain on her face.
Real pain.
But then it disappeared.
“You would choose a woman you married over your own mother?””
Ryan closed his eyes.
That was the question she always used.
A choice.
A battle.
Her or everyone else.
But he finally understood.
“I shouldn’t have to choose.””
Diane said nothing.
“A mother doesn’t make her son prove his loyalty every day.””
The silence was deafening.
Ryan continued.
“You made me think protecting you was love.””
His voice cracked.
“But maybe it was just fear.””
Diane’s face changed.
“Leave.””
Ryan stared.
“What?””
“If you believe them, leave.””
He looked around the house.
The place where he grew up.
The place where he thought he was safe.
“I’m not leaving because you told me to.””
Diane’s eyes narrowed.
“Then why?””
“Because I need to find out who I am without your voice in my head.””
That was the one thing Diane couldn’t control.
She could control guilt.
Fear.
Anger.
But she couldn’t control someone choosing himself.
Ryan turned toward the door.
“Where are you going?””
He stopped.
“I don’t know.””
Diane laughed quietly.
“You’ll come back.””
Ryan looked over his shoulder.
“You really believe that?””
“Yes.””
She smiled.
“Because everyone always does.””
Ryan felt a chill.
Not because the words were powerful.
Because they revealed something.
She had always seen people as things that belonged to her.
Not people.
Possessions.
He walked out.
At Robert’s house, Emily watched Daniel carefully.
She still didn’t know whether she could trust him completely.
Too many secrets had already entered her life.
But one thing was clear.
He knew Diane.
Maybe better than anyone.
“Why did you wait so long to tell the truth?”” Emily asked.
Daniel looked down.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“That I believed her.””
Emily understood.
Because she had believed her too.
“I thought I was smarter than that,” Daniel admitted.
“I thought I could see through people.””
He looked at Emily.
“But Diane doesn’t attack your intelligence.””
“No?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“She attacks your emotions.””
The words stayed with Emily.
Because that was exactly what happened.
Diane didn’t convince her with facts.
She convinced her through guilt.
Daniel continued.
“She finds the thing you care about most.””
“For Ryan, it was family.””
“Yes.””
“For me?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Being loved.””
Emily looked away.
The answer hurt because it was true.
She had always wanted to be accepted.
Especially by Diane.
Especially because Ryan loved her.
A knock interrupted them.
Everyone froze.
Robert immediately stood.
Daniel became tense.
Emily looked toward the door.
“Who is it?””
No answer.
Then a voice.
“Emily.””
Her heart stopped.
Ryan.
Robert looked at her.
“Do you want to see him?””
Emily didn’t answer.
A part of her wanted to.
A part wanted to never see him again.
Finally, she stood.
“I need to know what he wants.””
Robert opened the door.
Ryan stood outside.
He looked different.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
The confidence was gone.
The certainty.
The belief that he always knew what was right.
“Emily.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
Ryan swallowed.
“I need to talk to you.””
Robert stepped between them.
“She doesn’t owe you anything.””
Ryan nodded.
“I know.””
That surprised everyone.
Ryan looked at Emily.
“I know I hurt you.””
Emily remained silent.
“I know saying sorry doesn’t fix it.””
His voice became emotional.
“But I found out things tonight that I should have known years ago.””
Emily studied him.
“What things?””
Ryan looked inside the house.
He saw Daniel.
His face changed.
“You know him?””
Emily nodded.
“He knows the truth about your mother.””
Ryan closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“I think I finally do too.””
Nobody moved.
Then Ryan said the one thing Emily never expected.
“My mother lied to me my entire life.””
The room went silent.
Because those words were not easy for him.
They cost him something.
His identity.
His memories.
His family.
Emily looked at him.
For the first time since the kitchen…
She saw regret.
Real regret.
But forgiveness was not the same as understanding.
And trust was not rebuilt in one night.
“Why should I believe you now?””
Ryan looked down.
He had no answer.
And that was the first honest thing he had given her.
“I don’t know.””
He looked back at her.
“But I’m going to prove it.””
Before Emily could respond, Daniel suddenly looked at his phone.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Robert noticed.
“What happened?””
Daniel turned the screen around.
A message.
From Diane.
Everyone stared.
The message contained only five words.
I know where Laura is.
Emily’s blood ran cold.
Because Laura wasn’t supposed to be found.
She was the woman who disappeared years ago.
The woman who knew Diane’s secrets.
The woman who could finally tell the truth.
Ryan looked at the message.
Then at Daniel.
“Where is she?””
Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.
And for the first time, everyone saw fear on his face.
“Alive.””
A pause.
“But Diane found her first.””
The room went silent.
Because if Laura was alive…
May you like
Then Diane’s biggest secret was no longer buried.
And she would do anything to keep it that way.
