Chapter 6: The Apology That Came Too Late
Aaliyah expected many things from Marcus.
Anger.
Excuses.
Blame.
What she did not expect was for him to ask her to meet at the small café where they had their first date.
She almost refused.
Almost.
But something told her she needed to hear what he had to say.
When she arrived, Marcus was already there.
No expensive watch.
No confident smile.
No attempt to act like everything was normal.
Just Marcus.
The man she fell in love with.
He stood when he saw her.
“Thank you for coming.””
Aaliyah sat down.
“Make it worth my time.””
The words were harsh.
But honest.
Marcus nodded.
“I deserve that.””
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Marcus took a deep breath.
“I was wrong.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
Those three words were simple.
But they mattered.
“I was wrong for letting my mother put everything on you.””
He looked down.
“I was wrong for acting like your exhaustion didn’t matter.””
Aaliyah remained quiet.
“I was wrong because I got comfortable.””
His voice became softer.
“I thought because you loved me, you would always stay.””
Aaliyah looked away.
“And now?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Now I know love isn’t something you can keep testing.””
The café noise surrounded them.
People laughing.
Coffee machines running.
Life continuing.
But at their table, everything felt still.
“I want to fix this,” Marcus said.
Aaliyah looked at him.
“How?””
He hesitated.
“By changing.””
She waited.
“That’s not enough.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“And how long will it last?””
His expression fell.
Because that was the question that mattered.
Promises were easy.
Consistency was hard.
“I don’t know,” he admitted.
Aaliyah appreciated the honesty.
More than another perfect speech.
“But I know I don’t want to lose you.””
She looked at him.
“You almost did.””
“I know.””
“You didn’t lose me because of dishes.””
“I know.””
“You lost me because I felt alone while standing next to you.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The words hurt because they were true.
“I’m sorry.””
Aaliyah looked at the man across from her.
Part of her wanted to forgive him immediately.
Because she loved him.
Because history mattered.
Because marriage mattered.
But another part of her remembered the woman who walked out that door.
The woman who finally chose herself.
“I need time,” she said.
Marcus nodded.
“I understand.””
“And things cannot go back to normal.””
“They won’t.””
She studied him.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
Aaliyah looked outside.
For the first time, she saw a possibility.
Not a guarantee.
Not a happy ending.
Just a possibility.
But before she could respond, her phone buzzed.
A message from Denise.
Aaliyah looked down.
Her face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“What is it?””
She turned the phone around.
The message was short.
*We need to talk. Alone. You owe this family an explanation.*
Marcus frowned.
“No.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
“No?””
“You don’t owe her anything.””
Aaliyah stared at the message.
Then slowly locked her phone.
“You’re right.””
Marcus looked surprised.
“What?””
Aaliyah stood.
“I don’t owe her an explanation.””
She looked at him.
“But she owes me one.””
And for the first time, Marcus saw something different in Aaliyah’s eyes.
Not anger.
Not pain.
Power.

Because this time, she wasn’t walking away.
She was walking toward the truth.
