Chapter 5: Denise’s Last Attempt to Control the Story
Denise was furious.
Not just because Aaliyah had left.
Not just because the dishes had shattered.
She was furious because she no longer controlled the situation.
For years, Denise had been the center of her family.
Her opinions were treated like rules.
Her feelings were treated like facts.
When she wanted something, everyone adjusted.
That was how things worked.
Or at least, that was how they worked before Aaliyah stopped cooperating.
“She is manipulating him,” Denise told Tasha over the phone.
Tasha sat on her bed, listening.
“Mom…”
“No. I know women like her.””
Tasha sighed.
“You mean women who get tired?””
Denise went silent.
“What did you say?””
Tasha immediately regretted the comment.
“Nothing.””
“No. Say it.””
Tasha looked at the ceiling.
“Maybe Aaliyah had a point.””
The silence that followed was dangerous.
Denise lowered her voice.
“You’re defending her?””
“I’m not defending anyone. I’m saying maybe everyone was too comfortable.””
Denise stood in her kitchen.
The same kitchen where the broken dishes had once been scattered across the floor.
“You sound just like her.””
Tasha frowned.
“Mom, that’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
Denise laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what I have done for this family.””
And maybe that was true.
Denise had sacrificed.
She had raised children.
She had survived difficult years.
But somewhere along the way, she confused sacrifice with authority.
She believed because she had struggled, everyone else should struggle too.
Because she had served others, others should serve her.
Meanwhile, Marcus was struggling with a different kind of reality.
He had returned home that night and noticed everything Aaliyah used to do.
The clean counters.
The organized living room.
The groceries stocked perfectly.
The little things.
Things he never noticed because they were always there.
Until they weren’t.
He opened the refrigerator.
Half-empty.
He looked around.
The house felt different.
Not because Aaliyah had taken anything.
Because she had taken her effort with her.
And suddenly Marcus understood something painful.
He had mistaken her love for obligation.
The next day, he went to see Denise.
His mother immediately started talking.
“She needs to apologize.””
Marcus stared at her.
“No.””
Denise stopped.
“What?””
“She doesn’t.””
Denise looked offended.
“Excuse me?””
Marcus sat down.
“I said she doesn’t need to apologize.””
For once, Denise had no immediate response.
“You’re taking her side?””
Marcus rubbed his face.
“I’m taking the truth’s side.””
His mother stared at him.
“You’re my son.””
“Yes.””
“Then you should support your family.””
Marcus looked at her.
“She is my family.””
That sentence changed the room.
Because Denise realized something.
Marcus wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t defending Aaliyah out of guilt.
He was finally seeing things clearly.
“You’re letting your wife disrespect me.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
“She finally stopped letting us disrespect her.””
Denise’s face hardened.
“She has changed you.””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“No.””
He paused.
“She changed herself.””
That was the moment Denise understood.
She had lost control.
Not only over Aaliyah.
Over Marcus.
And she hated it.
“You’re going to regret choosing her over your mother.””
Marcus stood.
“I’m not choosing between you.””
He looked at her.
“I’m choosing to stop hurting someone because you expect me to.””
May you like
Denise didn’t answer.
Because for the first time, she had no argument.
