Chapter 9: She Came To Take Back Control
Gwendolyn stood beneath the security light like she belonged there.
That was the thing about her.
Even when she was wrong, she carried herself like the world owed her an explanation.
I watched her through the camera.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t shouting.
She looked calm.
That worried me more.
Because I knew her patterns.
Anger was obvious.
Manipulation was quiet.
My phone rang.
Her name appeared.
I answered but didn’t speak.
“Paige.””
Her voice was soft.
Too soft.
“You’re really going to make me stand outside?””
I looked at the screen.
“You came without asking.””
“I wanted to talk.””
“No.””
A pause.
“Excuse me?””
“You wanted information.””
The silence was immediate.
Then she laughed lightly.
“You always were dramatic.””
There it was.
The old Gwendolyn.
The one who dismissed my feelings.
I almost smiled.
Because now I could see the pattern clearly.
“I know about the documents.””
The silence that followed told me everything.
She knew.
Or at least she suspected.
“What documents?””
I looked at the camera.
“You tell me.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Maybe.””
I stayed calm.
“But you do.””
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then her voice changed.
“You think you understand everything because you found some papers?””
“No.””
I looked around my home.
“I understand because people finally stopped protecting you from the consequences of your choices.””
Her jaw tightened.
“You are making a mistake.””
“By what?””
“Turning against family.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“By finally listening to the truth.””
She stepped closer to the gate.
“Your grandfather always hated me.””
I froze.
That was not what I expected.
“He never hated you.””
“Yes, he did.””
Her voice became sharper.
“He judged me from the beginning.””
I watched her carefully.
And suddenly, I realized something.
Gwendolyn wasn’t just angry.
She was afraid.
“You knew he didn’t trust you.””
She looked away.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“You knew.””
She turned back.
“Your grandfather was old and suspicious.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“He was observant.””
That angered her.
“You think you’re better than everyone now?””
“No.””
I answered.
“I think I finally know my worth.””
Her face hardened.
And then she said something that confirmed everything.
“You have no idea what your grandfather really left you.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
She smiled.
Not kindly.
Not warmly.
A dangerous smile.
“It means you should ask your father why your grandfather removed him from control of the family company.””
I froze.
Family company?
I had never heard anything about that.
My grandfather’s company had disappeared years ago.
Or at least, that was what I believed.
“What are you talking about?””
Gwendolyn stepped back.
“I think you should ask Samuel.””
Then she walked away.
I stood there, completely still.
Because suddenly, there was another mystery.
My grandfather.
The company.
My father.
And whatever happened before I was old enough to understand.
I called my father immediately.
He answered after one ring.
“Paige?””
“Dad.””
My voice was different.
He heard it.
“What happened?””
I stared at the empty driveway.
“Why did Grandpa remove you from control of the company?””
The silence was instant.
A silence full of fear.
And regret.
“Who told you that?””
I closed my eyes.
“Gwendolyn.””
My father exhaled slowly.
Then he said the words I never expected to hear.
“Because I made a mistake that almost destroyed everything your grandfather built.””
I sat down.
“Tell me the truth.””
Another long pause.
Then my father whispered:
“Paige, your grandfather didn’t leave you that house because he thought you were his favorite.””
My heart raced.
“He left it to you because he believed you were the only person who could fix what we broke.””
I looked out at the city.
And for the first time, I realized this story was never just about a family argument.
It was about a legacy.
A legacy someone had spent years trying to hide from me.
May you like
And now…
It belonged to me. :::
