Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Gate

I watched my father through the security camera for nearly five minutes.

He didn’t knock.

He didn’t call.

He simply stood there.

Almost like he was afraid of what would happen if he crossed that gate.

That feeling was unfamiliar.

Because my father had never been afraid of losing me before.

I grabbed my keys and walked outside.

The evening air was cool against my face as I approached the entrance.

The gate opened.

My father looked up immediately.

His expression changed.

First surprise.

Then confusion.

Then something close to disbelief.

“Paige?””

I stopped several feet away.

“Why are you here?””

His eyes moved past me.

Toward the house.

The glass walls.

The lights.

The view.

“You live here?””

I didn’t answer.

He looked back at me.

“You live here?””

This time, his voice was quieter.

“Yes.””

The silence that followed felt louder than any argument we had ever had.

My father slowly shook his head.

“I don’t understand.””

I folded my arms.

“That makes two of us.””

He flinched.

“I never knew.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“You never asked.””

That hurt him.

I could see it.

But pain wasn’t always the same as change.

Sometimes people only feel pain when they finally experience consequences.

He looked at the house again.

“How long?””

“How long what?””

“How long have you owned this place?””

I watched him process the answer before I gave it.

“Three years.””

His face changed completely.

Three years.

Three years while he watched me live quietly.

Three years while Gwendolyn treated me like I was taking up space.

Three years while they assumed I had nowhere else to go.

“You could have told me,” he whispered.

I nodded.

“I could have.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Because I needed to know if you loved me when I had nothing.

But I didn’t say that.

Some truths were too painful to give to people who had already wasted their chances.

Instead, I said:

“Because I wanted to know if you would stand up for me without needing a reason.””

His eyes lowered.

And finally, after all those years, my father looked ashamed.

“I failed you.””

I said nothing.

“I should have protected you.””

Still nothing.

“I kept telling myself I was keeping the family together.””

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“You were keeping everyone comfortable.””

That sentence broke something in him.

Because it was true.

My father had mistaken silence for kindness.

Avoiding conflict for love.

But sometimes refusing to choose a side was choosing the side of the person causing harm.

He stepped closer.

“Can I come inside?””

I looked at the house behind me.

The place where I had finally built a life.

Then I looked back at him.

“Not tonight.””

He nodded slowly.

And surprisingly, he didn’t argue.

Before leaving, he turned around.

“Gwendolyn knows.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She found out you own this place.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

My father looked uncomfortable.

“She saw the paperwork.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because I knew Gwendolyn.

And I knew exactly what she would do next.

She wouldn’t apologize.

She wouldn’t admit she was wrong.

She would do what she always did.

She would try to regain control.

My phone rang before my father even reached his car.

Gwendolyn.

I stared at the name flashing on the screen.

Then I answered.

“Paige,” she said.

Her voice was completely different from the woman who had ordered me out of my bedroom.

It was softer.

Almost sweet.

“I think we need to talk.””

I looked out over my property.

The home she never knew existed.

The life she never believed I could have.

And I knew something important.

The fight was not over.

It had just changed.

Because before, Gwendolyn thought she was throwing me away.

May you like

Now she realized something much worse.

She had thrown away the person who could never be controlled again.
