Chapter 23: The Aunt My Father Erased From Our Family
I spent the entire night thinking about one thing.
My father had erased a person from our family.
Not hidden.
Not lied about.
Erased.
That was different.
Money could be stolen.
Documents could be changed.
But removing someone from your own history required something much deeper.
A decision.
A choice.
My father had decided we didn’t need to know Caroline existed.
The next morning, I sat across from Daniel at a small coffee shop downtown.
Ethan was beside me.
Rachel sat quietly across from us.
Nobody spoke much.
Everyone was exhausted.
But nobody wanted to leave.
Not before we understood.
“Tell me about Caroline,” I said.
Daniel looked at his coffee.
“She was your father’s older sister.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because your father cut contact with her.””
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because she disagreed with him.””
I almost smiled.
Of course.
Anyone who challenged my father disappeared.
“What did she disagree about?””
“Everything.””
“That’s vague.””
Daniel nodded.
“Because it started long before your mother died.””
He looked at me.
“Caroline saw your father changing.””
“How?””
“She believed he was becoming obsessed with control.””
Ethan looked down.
“Sounds familiar.””
Daniel nodded.
“She warned your mother.””
My heart tightened.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t Mom tell me?””
“Because your mother was trying to protect you.””
Again.
That word.
Protect.
But now I understood the difference.
My mother protected me by giving me the truth.
My father protected himself by hiding it.
“Where is Caroline now?””
Daniel slid a piece of paper across the table.
An address.
“She agreed to meet.””
“You already contacted her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew this day would come.””
I looked at the address.
“She expected me?””
“Yes.””
That frightened me.
How many people had been waiting for me to discover the truth?
The house was small.
Quiet.
Nothing like my father’s carefully maintained home.
This place felt lived in.
Human.
An older woman opened the door before we knocked.
She looked at me.
And immediately started crying.
“You look just like your mother.””
I froze.
No one had ever said that before.
Not like that.
Not with sadness.
“Are you Caroline?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she opened her arms.
I hesitated.
But something about her expression broke through my defenses.
I hugged her.
And she held me like she had been waiting years to do it.
Inside, she made tea.
Her hands shook.
“I never thought I would see you.””
“Why?””
“Because your father made sure nobody could find me.””
I sat down.
“What did he tell people?””
“That I was unstable.””
My stomach tightened.
The same pattern.
Anyone who disagreed with him became the problem.
“What happened between you two?””
Caroline looked out the window.
“Your father was different when we were young.””
“How?””
“He was charming.””
That surprised me.
“He was?””
She smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
“Then what changed?””
“Power.””
She looked at me.
“Your father discovered that people would do almost anything if they believed he was protecting them.””
The sentence hit hard.
“What happened with Mom?””
Caroline became quiet.
“Your mother was the first person who refused to believe him.””
I listened carefully.
“She loved him.””
I swallowed.
“She really loved him.””
That hurt.
Because it made everything more complicated.
“But she also saw him clearly.””
“What did she know?””
Caroline looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“She knew your father was planning to take control of everything.””
“Everything?””
“The money.””
“The family.””
“Your future.””
I looked down.
It was the same story.
“What happened the night she died?””
Caroline’s expression changed.
“I was there.””
My heart stopped.
“You were?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because your father made me believe I had no choice.””
“How?””
She took a deep breath.
“He told me if I spoke, he would make sure you and Ethan lost everything.””
My hands tightened.
“He threatened you.””
“Yes.””
“What happened that night?””
Caroline looked down.
“Your mother confronted him.””
“About the money?””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
“She told him she was going to expose everything.””
My heart raced.
“What did he do?””
Caroline closed her eyes.
“He became angry.””
“How angry?””
“Angry enough that I knew something terrible would happen.””
Silence.
“Then what?””
“She fell.””
My breathing stopped.
“Did he push her?””
Caroline looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
The answer hurt.
“But…”
She continued.
“But I know one thing.””
“What?””
“Your father lied about what happened afterward.””
“What do you mean?””
“He didn’t call for help immediately.””
The room went cold.
“What?””
“He waited.””
“How long?””
Caroline whispered:
“Seven minutes.””
Seven minutes.
A lifetime.
“He was trying to figure out what to do.””
I felt sick.
Caroline reached for my hand.
“Your mother knew this might happen.””
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because she told me.””
“What did she say?””
Caroline’s voice broke.
“She said, ‘If John ever has to choose between admitting the truth and protecting himself, he will always choose himself.’”
I closed my eyes.
Because my mother had understood him.
Better than anyone.
Then Caroline said something else.
Something that changed the entire story.
“Your mother didn’t only leave evidence for you.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“She left evidence against someone else.””
“Who?””
Caroline looked at Rachel.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Your father wasn’t the only person who betrayed her.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who else?””
May you like
Caroline whispered:
“The person who helped him hide what happened that night.””
