Chapter 12: The Storage Unit Full of Secrets
The drive to the storage facility was silent.
Not peaceful.
Not comfortable.
Just silent.
Ethan kept looking in the rearview mirror.
I noticed.
“You think someone is following us?””
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
For the first time in years, I saw my brother without the confidence he always carried.
He looked scared.
Not of me.
Of our father.
And that realization hurt.
Because I had spent so long thinking Ethan was choosing Dad.
Maybe he was actually trapped too.
When we arrived, the storage facility looked completely ordinary.
Rows of metal doors.
Security cameras.
A place where people kept old furniture and forgotten memories.
But I knew better.
My father didn’t store ordinary things.
He stored secrets.
Ethan led me down the hallway.
Unit 214.
He entered the code.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
And I stopped.
Inside wasn’t furniture.
It was boxes.
Hundreds of them.
Organized.
Labeled.
My father’s obsession with control was everywhere.
Each box had a date.
A category.
A name.
Ethan turned on the light.
“I told you.””
I stepped inside.
“What is all this?””
“Dad’s archive.””
I looked at the shelves.
Documents.
Photos.
Records.
My entire family’s history.
Controlled by one person.
I opened the first box.
Inside were old bills.
Nothing unusual.
The second.
Medical records.
My mother’s.
I froze.
The third.
Legal documents.
I grabbed one.
Then another.
Then another.
My hands started shaking.
These were originals.
Not copies.
The real documents.
“The trust papers,” I whispered.
Ethan nodded.
“Somewhere here.””
We searched.
Minutes passed.
Then I found a box with my name.
Not my father’s handwriting.
My name.
I opened it.
Inside were things from my childhood.
Drawings.
School records.
Photos.
Letters.
At first, I thought it was sentimental.
Then I found the documents underneath.
My entire life had been recorded.
Every mistake.
Every argument.
Every emotional moment.
My father had documented everything.
“Why?””
Ethan looked away.
“Because he was building a case.””
“A case against me?””
“Yes.””
My stomach turned.
“He wanted to prove I couldn’t handle my own life.””
Ethan nodded.
“He wanted control of everything.””
I searched faster.
Then I found it.
A folder marked:
“FINAL TRANSFER.””
My hands shook.
I opened it.
The first page was the trust document.
The second was a transfer agreement.
The third…
A signature.
Not mine.
My father’s.
And someone else’s.
I looked closer.
The second signature belonged to—
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“What?””
I showed him.
His face went pale.
Because the person who had signed away control of my inheritance…
Was someone we never suspected.
Someone who claimed to protect my mother’s wishes.
Someone who had helped my father from the beginning.
My mother’s attorney.
But before we could read further, a sound came from outside.
The storage door.
Closing.
Ethan looked at me.
“We’re not alone.””
The lights suddenly went out.
My phone screen was the only light.
Then we heard footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Coming closer.
A voice echoed through the dark.
“I knew eventually one of you would come here.””
My blood froze.
Because I knew that voice.
My father.
And he wasn’t angry.
May you like
He sounded disappointed.
Like a man who had just caught his children making the biggest mistake of their lives.
